That's a tough one, which color are we blind to?
He's half caucaision and half black.
I wouldn't care if he were purple, when he voted for that Bush/Kennedy/ McCain amnesty bill he lost my vote.

Good point.  The Iowa result tells us absolutely nothing about those who apparently live under rocks, when it comes to current events.

DomKen -> RE: Does Obama's win prove we are colorblind? (1/6/2008 12:50:00 PM)

South Carolina is where we'll be able to tell.

Well, that will tell us a bit more about the South, but I'll also be curious to see how he does in the traditionally liberal states, where the rascism tends to be more of the condescending (those poor African-Americans just aren't as good as white people-we should help them) variety.

the fact that we are still having to ask this question proves we are not colorblind.

True.  Perhaps it's more of a progress check.

dcnovice -> RE: Does Obama's win prove we are colorblind? (1/6/2008 12:56:48 PM)

There's also the question of whether his racial background may work for him, among people who want to prove to themselves that they aren't racists.

He already showed that to not be the case in Illinois at least. He won a fairly crowded primary against better funded candidates by getting the liberal vote. He then beat the GOP's token black who ran as the 'acceptable negro' and no one voted for him.

i hope the color blindness goes both ways....i like a lot of what obama says, and would vote for him before hillary any day.  time will tell how he holds up on the issues.  right now im leaning toward voting for ron paul, but the more i hear of obama, the more i listen to what he says.

but something today i heard troubled me.

i listen to an "old school r&b" station here in atlanta, and yes it caters to more of a black audience with its commercials and such, products advertised, clubs etc.  this doesnt bother me for i love the music and totally get the advertisers spending dollars for the biggest audience they can reach on that station.

but on the way home while ago, the dj made the statement "obama is the first black man to ever win the iowa caucus, this is why we need you to go register to vote by tomorrows deadline."

i certainly hope folks wont vote for him based solely on his color.  that would be as dumb as me voting for hillary just because she is(claims to be) a female.

juliaoceania -> RE: Does Obama's win prove we are colorblind? (1/6/2008 2:18:31 PM)

I believe that Obama is a breath of charimatic fresh air. JFK became president even though he was Catholic at a time when no one who was nearly as articulate or as charimatic was running against him. I think that race still plays an important factor, just like religion does, but I also believe the right people can overcome the race and the religion handicaps because they have that much going for them... I think Obama has far more going on than anyone in either of the two parties. I am so hoping he gets the nod to the general election... hands down he has gotten every Republican beat when it comes to charisma... his only challenger in charm is Edwards... but Edwards lacks the sincerity card.

TheHeretic -> RE: Does Obama's win prove we are colorblind? (1/6/2008 2:29:15 PM)

Of course, now he gets a hard look.  Things like this can be a problem for a candidate with a chance.  http://www.snopes.com/politics/obama/anthem.asp

Not a good photo to have floating around if you want to appeal in a general election.

popeye1250 -> RE: Does Obama's win prove we are colorblind? (1/6/2008 2:32:17 PM)

Seeks, yeah, they keep forgetting he's half white too.
Julia, I don't see what "charisma" has to do with anything.
This guy has already demonstrated by his votes in the senate that he's "Bush lite."
Are you trying to be "academic" again?

No popeye, I am just trying to avoid bitter men that flame me for not responding to their emails in a way they liked...

Kaiynasha -> RE: Does Obama's win prove we are colorblind? (1/6/2008 2:37:59 PM)

You know what I find so funny. That usually the ones who make everything about gender and race are the ones who vote based on gender and race. And it is usually the ones who are not of THAT gender or THAT race. The colorblind factor will not become a reality because the ones who ask the question are usually the ones voting against it.

Soon we will be hearing things about Affirmative Action and reverse discrimination.

Obama and Clinton have a great struggle ahead. And it is sad. But it is real.

Although I do not personally support Barak , I feel that this is the key in the linked article.
Bold emphasis Mine...

He's not running a Jesse Jackson campaign or an Al Sharpton campaign. He's positioned himself to be a candidate who happens to be black, rather than a black candidate."

There is a big difference.  He is running correctly on a political platform, as opposed to a racial one.
That garners respect from Me.  Even if I don't agree with his political views, I respect the man.
Edited to add:  And that is what causes the color blindness.  It is the fact that the color is not an issue.  Therefore there is no color to consider.

Why would anyone be troubled by the fact that for the first time in American history that Blacks have a chance to support a viable candidate to run for the Presidency? You don't think they should vote for him? Maybe Blacks should feel that since their needs have been so well addressed in the past by white candidates that there is no need to vote for Obama?

It's a silly notion to suggest that Blacks should not support Obama.

This would be comparable to suggesting that people in this Country should vote for the most honorable candidate regardless of party affiliation.

As of December 2007 36% of people polled thought that the President was doing a good job...What the Fuck? So how are we to make heads or tails of a report such as this....That Republicans will support their President regardless of his failures...The guy could eat a live baby and keep those numbers.

http://www.pollingreport.com/BushJob.htm

The fact that Obama has little experience means little....Hopefully he hasn't had the time in office to have already been bought and sold like so many of his peers.

He is fresh and new...Bill Bradley is going to campaign for him. He finds that he is an energizing and a compelling force that has the possibility of reuniting a country sorely divided. I agree.

How has the experince of prior Presidents ensured a successful Presidency? You folks are worried about his lack of experience? It's laughable. I would gladly accept someone without one day of political experience to run this Country...Could things really be much worse?

If I were black would I vote for Obama? In a New York minute.

Does that mean anything?

Nope...

Is that the smell of fear O59???

What are you worring about? Mrs Clinton's overseers will be out after him soon enough and he'll be sent pack to the liberal plantation and begin shillin for Mas Willie's wife so relax.

So the real reason for this thread is finally revealed.

I'm a vet and don't always put my hand over my heart or stand at attention or face the flag when the anthem is played. Simply put when, IMO, the anthem and flag are being done for an ulterior motive, such as a phony test of patriotism, then I don't participate and dare anyone to say or do anything about it.

I similiarly couldn't care less how a candidate for POTUS salutes or doesn't the flag.
