I don't smoke. Don't do drugs. Won't touch a drop of the spirits. But I'm in full support of legalizing the use of marijuana. I think it should be grown safely, taxed and sold in stores. As with alcohol, I think one should be of a certain age or higher to purchase it. If a relative buys some, brings it home and allows for someone a little under the age limit to try it... that's between the parent and kid. The only reason I feel an age limit should be imposed is that it is a controlled substance, and it does affect the brain. If you try studying for a test while you're high... you'd better take the test that way too. Or you're not likely to remember anything you read. I agree with the original poster. I think it's absolutely ridiculous that people can get drunk each and every night, causing long-term damage to themselves... and potentially to other people, in a variety of ways. But marijuana, far less detrimental, is subjected to intense scrutiny before being banned.
