metal ice trays?
roller skates that needed a key/extended to fit your shoes?
metal sliding boards that were extremely hot in the summer?  So much so that you had to use cardboard to slide down?  Or squeaking down a bit at a time?

What do you remember from childhood?

PanthersMom -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/10/2008 2:54:49 PM)

the guy who used to come around the neighborhood with his own truck and sell fresh fruit and veggies from his farm.  i miss that.  the city just across the border from my house would come by with santa claus that they'd hired to visit the little ones in their own city because we were the only little ones on our block.  sundays with the family at gramma's, the smell of her cooking, the adults playing cards after dinner.  life was much simpler then.

I was doing some thrift store shopping a while back and found 4 of those metal trays. I now own them and love it since I can't seem to get the plastic sort that don't fall apart after a few uses.

I'm about to be 41 and I honestly don't ever remember seeing the skates that needed a key.

The good things I remember from childhood,

Picking blackberries in the summer, coming home with purple hands and tongue and only about half the berries I picked.

My mom calling for me from the back porch, without using my full name.

Hearing the chimes of the ice cream truck on one of those blistering hot summer days.

My dear friends and relatives who are no longer amongst us.

My pet rooster, an easter gift that survived.

Banana seat bikes & putting cards in the wheels to make noise as you pedaled down the hills, letting go of the handlebars.

There was an alley/warehouse behind our house/across the street from the warehouse, there was a truck that would park/GIVE AWAY gallons of ice cream M-F after school.
We also had the neighborhood perv who always stopped his car beside us when we were riding our bikes asking where "Pussy Willow Rd" was just to watch us blush ;(

block parties

laying on the lawn at my grandparents house watching clouds drift by and naming the shapes as we ate otter pops

catching fireflies

exploring the woods in my grandparents neighborhood, and making forts under the williow tree

Topps bubblegum and trading cards (I dont think they even bother with the bubblegum in those packs, anymore)

No TV, no computer, no videos. Movies were something you had to drive 10 miles into "town" for. The house had one phone and if it rang during dinner, you let it ring.

We had radio, records on the record player, music (guitars, piano) and lots of books.

Leaning to drive stick shift at age 13. Baling hay with a crew of munchkins, the little one driving the pickup, barely able to see over the wheel, everyone half drunk on shandy.

i remember having to actually get up off my butt if i wanted to change the TV channels, of which there were about... 6?   lol

i remember looking forward to Mardi Gras and having the time of my life.

i remember that when mom said go play, she meant get up off my butt and actually play... as in outdoors... fresh air, other kids... not a video game or computer screen [8|]

and how could i forget vinyl records [:D]

Tantriqu -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/10/2008 5:32:49 PM)

Skipping double-dutch with my friends down the road, without a play date and never being run over.

Walking to the playground and playing on all the death-defying equipment, with no adults around.

Biking to the park with my friends, and never once feeling in danger.

Buying a comic book and a chocolate bar, or candy cigarettes or a licorice pipe, and still have change from a quarter [can't even make a 'cents' sign anymore!]
And no, it didn't make me want to take up smoking!

I remember the metal slides where we would swipe large pieces of waxed paper to sit on when sliding down to make it slicker...fun!

MissHarlet -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/10/2008 6:28:09 PM)

bread wrappers to sit on and go down the slide to make it slick and slide better, milknickle ice cream bars , soda fountains where you ordered drinks with real malt powder if you ordered a malt, being gone all day on your bicycle and no one worried about where you were, squeezing lemons on a hot day to make lemonade, sitting on the icecream freezer that had lots of rugs or towels piled on it so the adults could turn the crank easier as it got closer to being frozen .. they needed the leverage ... yes Im older .. and yes I remember .. but Im not old ... old is 5 yrs older than me on any given day .

MissHarlet -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/10/2008 6:29:55 PM)

I remember roller skate keys and even remember skeleton keys that really were used .. and phones that only had rotary dials on them

MasterKalif -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/10/2008 6:34:20 PM)

I remember running out on hot summer days in our neighborhood when the ice cream seller would come with his bicycle and chime the bells...we all knew it was ice cream time...or the guys who used to come by to "sharpen" your kitchen knives for a small fee...this was in my native Chile in the early 80's...cool skates on 4 wheels...

I could go on, but it would get too local.

MasterKalif -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/10/2008 6:35:50 PM)

Interesting! I remember phones with rotary dials...I wish they still had them, they were nice...

I also remember when most houses had record players...

Not just record players... HiFi's!!

And BIG console televisions that took a small army to move...

Sunday drives after church, kids packed in the back of the Buick Electra, looking at all of the "huge" houses in the city before going back to our home on the lake.

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Do you remember.............................. (1/10/2008 6:46:35 PM)

Didnt have much of a childhood up to about age 16... most of it was spent recovering from sugery (4 by age 14)... and other heart issues.  once spent 6 months when i was 14 in hospital recovering as my chest was wide open when i lay in bed because it had to heal by itself as the surgery got infected and the pain of it from having the bandage ripped apart 3 times a day and replaced.... HURT worse than anything.  not to mention i was in isolation all alone with not much visiting allowed.  i did get to meet local hockey players from the leafs aka now known as the laughs... because the team is a great supporter for hospital for sick kids toronto.  that was about the only good thing in my childhood.
