Hmmm....I'd love to insert a smart assed reply but it'll only come out half baked, so why bother? Yanno Pagan is a term which Christianity used to describe every other spiritual faith not of it's own. Thusly, people who are Islamic, Muslams, Buddists, Daoists, etc are also Pagans. But this is just my half baked POV.

SORRY!  but god, its Taoist...sorry really, but that was making  me nuts.

Which is why I spelled it the way I did. Confusing enough that the pronounciation isn't akin to the spelling  lol.

"Daoist" isn't wrong.  You can write it either way.  It depends on your Romanization system (kinda like "Beijing" vs. "Peking," "qi" vs. "ch'i," etc.).

I wonder why it is that the lost sheep always move towards Buddhism, or some half-baked "Goddess" paganism.  Somewhere, along the road, Christianity become the uncool kid among "world religions".  Maybe the effort required to be a Christian is unappealing to the "thirty-minutes or less" generation, - a generation that would rather receive a neat and tidy clinical diagnosis like "bipolar" or ADHD, than deal with spiritual issues.

Well, I can only speak for myself, as a second generation pagan. So far, to my outsider's eyes, there are two sorts of christians out there - the first group are the ones who are truly devoted to their faith, live good lives, and actually take the time to acquire an understanding of their theology and what it means to them. I have great respect for these people and cherish the few I've met as friends and councilors. The second group, by far the majority, start coversations with questions like "Have you ever thought about embracing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ". I do not proselytize my faith, and I do not appreciate the attitude taken by those christians who insist on prying into my spiritual affairs. (Okay, there is a third group, the true majority, who do not think about their faith at all, but they are, for the most part, christian only in name and really don't count in my opinion - they do not take an active hand in their own spiritual lives.) Of course, I don't spend hours every day complaining about how my life is unhappy. I have faith in my household gods and earthly deities, and I also have faith in myself and my ability to serve as the captain of my own destiny - despite the setbacks I have experienced, I am willing to roll up my sleeves and work make things better, and when I am troubled, I pray for strength and guidance. I know from observation that this is not true of most Americans, for whom apathy is an endemic problem.

It may be that your friend has found solace in the teachings of Buddha, but more likely his half-hearted interest in that philosophy comes from spiritual apathy and intellectual malaise. It is easy in the modern age to mutter about karma (invariably mangling the concept beyond recognition as most americans do) and believe that enlightenment - thus happiness - comes by divesting oneself of worldly possessions and living on a mountaintop, without ever actually considering the philosophy or really learning anything about it. It requires no work, no introspection, and most importantly, no faith. In the end, the vast majority of people now just simply don't want to be bothered, and that repells them away from christianity simply because there are christians who insist on bothering them.

I appreciate your concern for your friend's welfare, and in fact (from the small thumbnail you've provided) agree that he's at a crisis point, but faith, in the end, is a personal thing. He mst come to it for himself, and I suspect he has much farther to fall before he truly reaches that particular crossroad.

I just wanted to say that I don't know what religion has to do with Mental Disorders like Bi Polar and ADHD..... ? Shouldn't that be in another subject?

And really...you should never push your religion on anyone. Just because you believe in it and think it to be true does not mean others will or have to. How would you feel if someone tried to push a religion on you that you did not believe in and didin't want to hear about?

You mean Christians automatically have fulfilling marriages and also quit whacking off????  Puh-leassssse!

No, Christians sometimes have fulfilling poly and tribal relationships with other Christian kinksters.  At least, that's the way it is working for me and mine.

The fantasy you wrote about is the one I was fed by my church during the pre-marital counseling that church required before it would marry us.  It was, of course, a lie, and caused me no end of grief for years.

This "quote" angers me, repulses me and draws me to respond.
I usually stay away from these discussions because of my background, education and experience.

You have absolutely violated the name of Jesus by this self indulgent act of crucifying others at the pursuit of your better than thou judgements and your self imposed pride in your "sharing Jesus with a co-worker."

You have demonstarted  the exact reasons why people are repulsed by evangelical christians ~~ pride, vanity and cynical judgments generalizing everyone.

You have not read your Scriptures lately.

"Let your light so shine before men that..... "
Look it up.

"Parker......have you ever thought about embracing the lessons of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ?"

Obviously you have NOT !

Once again, I don't seem to recall the chapter in the King James version of the New Testament that included Jesus saying to the multitude:

You know, guys......if it's okay with you I'd like to share a little about the Kingdom of God.  That is, only if it doesn't annoy anyone.  By a show of hands, who wants to hear about salvation?  Nobody, huh.  Well, I guess I'd better be off praying, folks.  I'm really sorry about interrupting, ladies and gentlemen.

The strange thing is that folks who, ostensibly, should be attracted to Christianity seem to treat it like the Bird Flu or some biologically altered form of leprosy.  Here we have the story of a low-born, Jewish underdog healing the sick, saving prostitutes from stoning, and talking junk to Pharisees and high priests like there's no freakin' tomorrow.  Jesus is quite possibly the MOST rebellious, in-your-face, too cool for school figure in written history, and, truth be told, resembles the high school reject more than the oppressive, knuckleheaded jock.  As a matter of fact, Christ is EXECUTED for his sincerity, people.  Maybe some of you guys had bad Sunday-school experiences, or maybe an unlucky run-in with a lonely priest, but it's no reason to close your minds to Jesus.

After reading some of the answers to this site, I see that a number of people are taking it in a completely different way than I did. Fascinating.

I interpreted Kranwest's posting as instructional in how to get rid of a co-worker's grousing by bringing up religion; I thought it a brilliant strategem.

I'm a Christian as well but I don't make efforts to cram it down other's throats or to describe other people's spiritual choices in derogatory terms.

There's where the rub is.   Please let me believe as I so choose and I'm happy to let you do the same.  I may not agree with your beliefs anymore than you agree with mine.  I do uphold your right to believe as you wish.

Christians are not illuminating the world when they put others down.  Neither is anyone else who makes a habit of treating others like they are too dense to make those choices for themselves.

I still come back to...why the heck was he cussing and discussing his porn habits and his sex life at work?   I wonder if he has ever heard of the concept of TMI?  The tolerance at work for that kind of stuff is pretty minimal anymore.  Parker better watch his back if he doesn't want someone claiming he is creating a hostile work environment with his sex talk.

Every workday, "Parker" sits in the seat adjacent to my own in the employee cafeteria, and relates the lurid details of a capsized marriage.

"I only get fucked once every few months, and she's sooooo domineering.  My wife is just asking for a divorce."

"Parker" is a fourth-generation, Boston-raised Mick: high-strung, heavy drinking, passive-aggressive.  There's  a certain desperate intensity that I find thoroughly entertaining in "Parker's" body-language and overall presentation.

"Instead of getting sex, I have to resort to internet porn.......and man, do I have alot of it.  She won't even watch it with me!"

I see the whole pathetic tableau in my mind's eye: a balding, pasty-fleshed "Parker", frantically jerking off to thirty second porno clips -- pulling and puffing-- until a couple meager droplets of cum dribble down the side of his half-erection.

Something moves me about Parker's  failures.........the fact that his God-given marital union has succumbed to coldness, frigidity, and an obsession with non-nutritive cock and cunt flicks.  Finally, I gather up the boldness to speak my mind out loud.

"Parker......have you ever thought about embracing the lessons of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ?"

Parker tells me that he's jaded with an abusive, Roman-Catholic upbringing.  "My interests lie more in the realm of Buddhism, I guess."

I spoke to Parker some more about Christ's blessings and sacrifice, but I can only hope that he took it to heart.

This started off fucking awesome. I thought it was going to sort of morph into a discussion of Colossians 3:18 and 1 Timothy 2:11.

I'm thinkin' the thread is more along the lines of Proverbs 26:4.

I always give people too much credit up front. I thought this was going to be a kind of clever parody of the story of an annoying evangelical office worker, but then it turns out that he's trying to lead the poor frustrated Mick to BDSM by way of Jesus.
