Scientists, there are ethical scientists and non ethical scientists, the latter do worry me in that what ills the world has now might well have been part of an experiment, and what ills have we to come, all at man's hand.

So many scientists are engaged in making life better for us, research into medical needs, energy and food, then there are scientists that seem to revel in creating things that cause harm in any imaginable and unimaginable way, weapons, plagues, viruses etc.

I read a book, a work of fiction, but with some scientific basis based upon current ongoing experiments by a large international outfit.Yes fiction it is, but possibly based on fact, a scenario where scientists were playing around with anti matter, they had created this substance and it had fell into the wrong hands etc etc.

Now, anti matter being one thing if it can be created, but what about experiments that do not go according to plan, a freak unaccounted for error or accident, what is the potential for all of us?

I could care less who first uttered or penned the words, "survival of the fittest.."

One thing I am confident on is that if I were a pig I would want to glow.  I wouldn't give a rats ass as to whether God disapproved of my appearance or not....I would simply be.  I would be the happiest glowing pig you that you have ever seen.  I would also teach myself to dance.

There is no sense in being a pig that glows if one is unable to dance.

Who could argue with this?

I don't believe in God myself really but was just pointing out how odd it is so many know what god does and doesn't approve of.

I had this conversation with somebody this past weekend.  I pointed out that it always amazed me that an omnipotent super-being would give a rat's ass what I thought about it, or what I did.

Then I pointed out that the existence of God and the whole non-existence of God are equally unprovable, and there is no real point in watching the members of the God Squad and atheists argue.

Sinergy

Even if you could talk to a "God," do you think that you, a puny human, equivalent to a cockroach in a deity's eye, would understand or fathom anything said "God" has said.

The Bible is just that...interpretative history.

"Unless I am mistaken God made the animals for our use... I don't think he put on any restrictions.... I imagine it is an experiment on how to transfer genes... or which genes do which... someday the lessons learned from that experiment or others like it may save your life or a loved one.

Butch"

And to Butch- dominion over the earth and all that is in it...is just the Judeo-Christian version of "God."

Frankly we've manipulated genes of plants for ages in agriculture/farming. The Egyptians grew crops and manipulated which variety worked best in their climate, as where I live in western Canada, we do the same.

Science is trying to undertand that which we do not, and we play "god," but it does not mean we will ever excel in bioethics. That's a whole different view than morals.

Humankind has never left animals alone in breeding.ie) stallions and horse stock, dog breeds, and more.

Why should it suddenly do that now? Just because you don't like green bacon?

Actually, creating antimatter is no big deal. We've already created tiny, tiny amounts of it experimentally, and allowed it to interact with regular matter. It's a common method used at Fermi for breaking down matter in order to study the component particles.

Now, if you really want to think about something scary, there's ZPE... Zero Point Energy. The idea that empty space really isn't empty, but actually a "froth" of virtual particles that are continuiously balancing themselves out. Alter that balance, and you could have all the energy the Earth would ever need... or the universe will start coming apart at the seams, like pulling on one end of a knitted sweater... It all depends on how well you can control it... if at all.

Then there's the scary possibility that we create a genetically altered virus or bacteria, that could wipe out most of the life on Earth.

Nearby supernova, destroying the Earth's ozone layer utterly...

Gamma ray bursts, fring the world to a crispy crackly crunch in a matter of a few minutes...

And the old standby of everyone going nuke happy... (which is only getting more likely, with each passing year as more and more pissant nations join the club)

There's no limit to the number of ways the Earth could die screaming. Science might be the cause of it, it could also be the thing that saves our collective asses. We won't know unless we keep learning. To do that, sometimes you have to do things that make people wonder... like making GITD pigs.

Yeah, unfortunately you're not going to find too many people on here interested in the green pigs.  People would rather talk than listen.  The only thing I'll say is that it didn't MORPH into a debate about religion.  It was couched as one from the outset.

I don't mean to be obtuse here, but since this thread has morphed into a debate about religion and the believers are quite comfortable quoting from their bible, I thought I'd quote from mine. I'd much rather explain the significance of the green pigs, but I think folks have lost interest and would much rather discuss the merits of their religious beliefs.

It depends. Are the green pigs Satanists?

Sadly, you are right on both accounts...

Ha! Good one. If they were, I'd find a way to jump in and debate the merits of that, too.

As i've just heard that in China scientists there have produced manufactured illuminous green pigs honestly.I don't know why humans just can't leave annimals alone. As we are all gods creatures but in no way are us humans in any shape or form do we have any right to think that we are God.As their is only one god and let's not forget that.

So how does causing a pig glow green make me God or even think that I am?

I'm also curious as to why no one should have the right to think they're a god. After all, declairing such a thing is what Free Will and Free Speech is all about.

In any case, please share with me your definiton of God and what makes it a god. How are humans doing the same things this god of yours can do and meant to Only do?

Assuming you are thinking of God from Judeo/Christian beliefs, there's not much written in the bible as to what we can and can't do to animals. Most of it is about which ones we should and shouldn't eat. Leviticus chapter 18 also mentions the other thing we should never do with animals.

So what makes turning a pig green a sin or discusting act under the eyes of God and his written word? What scriptures have ye to back thy claim?

Live a good life. If there are gods and they are just, then they will not care how devout you have been, but will welcome you based on the virtues you have lived by. If there are gods, but unjust, then you should not want to worship them. If there are no gods, then you will be gone, but will have lived a noble life that will live on in the memories of your loved ones.

That said, bring me some glowing green chops and ribs.
