I have to disagree with most responders on this thread in that this is not a stupid question - a stupid sentiment borne of ignorance - but not a stupid question. I am probably one of the few people who can speak to both sides of this issue, so I will.
There is a connection between religious fundamentalism, especially evangelicals, and belief that alternative lifestyles, especially BDSM, are satanic in nature. Back in the day, when I was a devout Southern Baptist, I believed that the Bible was the infallible word of God, that God intended for sex to be exclusively between a man and a woman in the context of marriage, that any sexual behavior outside that which God prescribed for us was in fact a sin orchestrated by Satan in an attempt to remove us from the favor of God. In short, I believed, as any fundamentalist religious practitioner knows, that:
- Homosexual sex, in addition to being a sin, is disgusting and gross
- Sex outside of marriage is a sin against God; God intended for us to abstain from sex until marriage.
- The human body is the temple of God. Any attempt to defile the temple, such as piercings, tattoos, promiscuous sex, is a sin and an invitation for Satan to enter the temple.
- Promiscuity is the playground of the devil.
- Dressing promiscuously, such as wearing tube tops, no tops, short skirts, short pants, no panties, buttless pants and thongs is a temptation created by Satan to woo the otherwise God fearing citizens into a life of promiscuous sex and an eternity in hell.
- Atheism is synonomous with Pedophilia and Satanism
Now, back in the day, if you would have asked me (or anyone in my social circle) about BDSM, we would have told you that it was a bunch of buttless leather pants wearing homosexuals engaged in bizarre rituals of rape and bondage, living lives of wanton sexual depravity, devil worship and blood-letting that could only mean one thing - that's right, the eminent return of Christ in the second coming as predicted in the book of Revelation. Of course, I and my friends spent an awful lot of time praying for you folks in a last ditch effort to save your souls from eternal damnation.
Fast forward 30 yrs, I matured, wised up, went to college and studied molecular biology and theology, as well as ancient history and political science. It was a long, painful process, but in time I abandoned my antiquated ideas and beliefs and am now a bonafied Atheist. Becoming an Atheist had a variety of advantageous effects on me, not the least of which was allowing me the intellectual freedom to start questioning everything that I had been taught and knew about sexuality. Fast forward a few more years and I am here with you fine folks on a bondage website freely discussing pervy things.
Now, back to the OP - one of the things I have noticed about this 'lifestyle' is the number of Atheists, Agnostics, and otherwise freethinkers who live and practice some form of BDSM. One must be intellectually honest and open-minded in order to accept the sexual practices and beliefs of those who are not 'mainstream.' This excludes most religious fundamentalists, who also happen to believe that anyone who does not worship their God, must be agianst God, ergo must be an Atheist, ergo must be a Satanist.
If you are a Christian reading this, I applaud you, so please don't flame me or turn this in to yet another debate about the merits of your religion. The Christians I refer to in my message are the majority and would question your Christianity and think you the devil in Jesus clothing. These, btw, are the same ones who voted for George Bush and will vote for Mike Huckabee. They are the majority and probably the same ones who fed the OP the bullshit which started this thread.
