It's so reassuring to see this same line of discussion on the submissive side!

I am an excellent speller, and a former teacher of children. Spelling is a knack. Spellchecking is not. I say in my "other" profile, "If you can't spell it, don't ask for it", and I mean that. Take the time to spiff up your text persona.

I am also rather fierce about chatspeak, such as the "U R" abbreviations. I am dreadful at rebuses! When presented with that kind of thing, I ask nicely for the other person to use complete words when speaking to me. If they can follow that simple direction, who knows what might follow!

I definitely don't think it's an indicator of lack of intelligence. Many times it can be, but not always. More often than not, it is simply an indicator of lack of interest in what someone is writing, that they are rushed, or passionate. It irks me, but I don't pass judgement on someone just because they goofed up gramatically.

Wolfie,

You say you don't care about grammar, but you use the lower case "i" when speaking about yourself. You are using language creatively to show your submissive nature. Thank you for caring.

i am often yelled at in English forums for my spelling, but i am from Norway, i normaly speak Norweegian, and i have a reading and writing disability, i find that spelling programs usualy dont work for me, often when somone spells bad it is not just plain lazyness but somthing the person canot help.

mantis65 -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (8/30/2005 3:21:32 AM)

I am dyslexic so sometimes my spelling is backwards or letters transposed.
The words may look right to me when I type them… even though they are scrambled to everyone else.
So I tell people up front I have dyslexia and I spell check everything.

It’s also good to keep in mind not everyone’s first language is English online.
I know a lot of people have good grammar as a pet peeve.
I also know some people have to put more effort into making themselves understood

kalstolyn -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (8/30/2005 4:04:55 AM)

I think spelling errors and typos are a part of human nature. That said, there is absolutely NO excuse for bastardizing the language by turning it into phonetic gangsta speak... seriously, "the" is only one keystroke longer than "da".

There's the difference, right there. We all make mistakes. But, if you're a poor speller and you know it, taking the extra moment and making the little extra effort to use spell check shows that you care about what you're putting forth.

nella -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (8/30/2005 7:40:18 AM)

The problem is that often it is not a little moment, if i was to spell chek everything a post would take perhaps half an houer, three quarter houer to just spell cheek if it was a long one, in adition to the writing it, and there would still be mistakes in it.

Actually "gangsta speak" as you so jingoisticly put it is just a creolization of american english which is a creolization of english english which was creolized from a bunch of other languages.

Im sure the Saxons were just as shocked as you.

Language is fluid whether you dig it or not sweet thang!!!

LadyHibiscus -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (8/30/2005 10:49:47 AM)

I do dig the language changes, but I have to say that "what UP?" just doesn't do it for me the way "hello" does!

Kasia -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (8/30/2005 11:12:13 AM)

My mother language is not English, its Croatian and I often find it quite hard to talk or write in English - our languages differ very much in composition and grammar.

Recently I moved to Germany and since I am trying to learn German (not easy at my age) I begin to notice I am mixing English and German and sometimes even Croatian (which I speak at home). I hate that [:@]

Sometimes I am looking for the right word in online dictionaries and checking my spelling, but from time to time I just get impatient and press enter [8|]

In the South Pacific Islands, there are many different countries with many different languages. The English Language is spoken by the majority of Pacific Islanders along with their native tongue. But their English is so bad, that it has affected the way I talk. My own mother says she doesn’t know me anymore when I talk to her on the phone because my grammar is now so poor.

That being said, I believe that anyone who would criticize someone for spelling or grammar, not of their own native tongue, is just not internationally traveled. Yes, the world does revolve around the English Language. But it is not something that everyone works at perfecting. As an American, it is my native Language and I have an obligation to speak and write it correctly. If your from England, I will yield to your corrections of my speech not with standing cultural slang’s because that is where the Language was born and the people there do pride themselves on speaking correctly. But if you are from Russia, Germany, Japan or anywhere else in the world that English is not your first language, I only view your errors in my language as a wonderful effort to communicate with me in the only language I know. I applaud your efforts and I would hope that my mistakes in your language would be considered as the same.

I absolutely adore people that make an effort to talk to me in my language when sometimes it is so hard for them to do so. The funniest conversations I have ever had was in Japan where a cute young girl knew enough English that she learned in school to speak broken sentences and I knew enough Japanese to reply somewhat in her tongue. We laughed at each others efforts for hours. We kept in touch for years via mail. She would always say my Japanese was so good. An obvious lie to make me feel comfortable in continuing to try. But it was her acceptance of my errors that I treasured. I nearly loved her for it.

To all people that feel English is not your first language and you are concerned about it. Don’t be.

To everyone that has hopped on my threads and responded I would like to say thank you for making me feel welcome here. You’re a great group of people.

Wow, I thought I was the only one that was bothered by the poor spelling and online lingo.

It amazes me what some of the younger generation are handing in the classroom. So it's certainly not just online or between friends.

I wish I worked in a human resources position just to see if people are handing in shabby resumes too.

Here is how I view it. If all a person has is your correspondence to judge you by, then a little effort goes a long way.

It's not really so much a reflection of intellegence, as it is a reflection of effort.

Nuke718 -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (8/30/2005 1:28:14 PM)

A couple of incorrect spellings in a post don't bother me. I can live with the same kind of little errors in a profile. I am very guilty of both.

But to have a profile that is overwhelmed with errors is nto just lazy but insulting to me. It says 'I don't care to take the time, and I figure you kinky folk are to wierd to care'. I usually just remember not to read things by that person in the future. As for the dominate Vs dominant issue, it is so common online, I just assume that people who make this mistake repeatadly, or don't change it in a short while just are not paying attention to the rest of the community.

Now I think it was John that mentioned grammer. I am one of those people who hates grammer, becasue the grammer rules twist my words into a very different form than I would say out loud. So I pretty much ignore a lot of grammer. If I can say it out loud and it makes sense, I go with it. I give others grammer a lot of leeway as well.

Nuke }:-

PS- Still feel bad about leaving the first letter of my friend Sharlot's name off on a board once...

Well I know of at least a few exceptions. I lived in Ireland for half a year and traveled extensively through Western Europe, my Boston partner lived in Japan for a few years and my other partners all have various degrees of extensive world travel and experience as well.

And we're pretty much all in agreement of what my post said.

You seem to be taking a lot of energy into social conventions and trying to rage against them.

Haha! I do that with German and French.

That's it! I'm going to go on a Henry Higgins style rant... "Why can't the English teach their children how to speak?" OOOhh I crack me up. (ok now I sound like a moron... go kals, go!)

Emerald

I can get passionate about certain things and my posted oppinions on those items can seem a bit intense at times. I rarely rage but I can see where my written words could offer some energy. Ill tone it down a bit so the message is louder than words.
