I don't view it as a sign of stupidity; there's no credible proof that even illiterate people are any less intelligent than highly literate ones. What strikes me when I read a note/profile/whatever that's full of spelling and grammatical errors is that the author didn't take any time to slow down and examine their own work before hitting "save".

Well, no matter how much care I take -before hitting the "send" button- in writing to someone here (which has only happened very few times so far) or writing a post on a forum, I always get at least one (usually more) word wrong, usually a word I forgot to delete when reformulating a sentence. And of course english isn't my native language so I misspell some words and use others improperly. But I think that if you can see no effort has been put in writing a message, it's not worth replying to it.

Just my .02€.

Incidentally, I was very self-conscious when writing this post because I didn't want this to be the time I missed a hundred spelling errors. :)

Please do not feel self concious - your post was well stated and we are a (on the whole) pretty harmless bunch (Well, except of LaM - if the rumours are to be believed, and as for m'LadyAngelika - well, lets just say, I would want to be at the good end of that paddle if the time arose![;)]) - seriously though - welcome to the boards and look forward to reading more posts from yourself.

Hope I didn't offend you with my comments. I think there's a difference between someone who makes some honest mistakes (especially if English isn't their first language) and someone who screws up spelling and grammar because they are in a rush to get back to watching American Idol. I make mistakes all the time, too... but I do make an effort, for what it's worth.

Thank you.

I don't feel self-conscious in the sense that I am afraid to speak, but more to the extent that, if I'm writing a treatise on good spelling and grammar, I should probably know the difference between "they're", "their" and "there". That kinda thing. :)

softysub -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (9/4/2005 8:31:57 PM)

I would never go by the poor spelling or grammar. As for my case, i am french and english being my second language, well i do make mistakes when typing or even speaking, it does get bad especially when i am tired, but it doesnt make me any less smarter [:D].

At the first conversation i have with anyone, i do explain that i might make mistakes, but also i do tell if He/She wishes to correct me, that i will gladly make note of my mistakes and correct them in the future.

Also, i do agree with TearCollector that there is a little part of laziness.

Just my opinion [:)]

erebus -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (9/5/2005 1:16:35 PM)

This thread has gotten numerous posts, so it's a hot button for many.

I am a terrible speller, so I use a dictionary and a spell checker. I run every letter I write, every report I am responsible for, though a spell checker. I also re-read it.

I'm pretty good at picking out misspellings, but not so good at remembering how to spell the word in the first place. I do some volunteer work in the medical field, and believe me, 'hemangiosarcoma' is a tough one to master, though breaking the word up helps. Another favorite of mine is 'thrombocytopenia', which is low platelet levels.

Thanks for this topic.

Although I am not a good speller, it drives me up a wall when I see more than one or two misspellings in a post. Not a good impression, and not a good sign.

skivvy -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (9/5/2005 1:41:18 PM)

i don't think bad spelling is a sign of unintelligence, but if the mistakes are all over the place and English is said person's first language, then it doesn't exactly reflect well on them. especially if it's on their profile... but who am i to judge? i spelled pheromones wrong on my profile! i had a feeling i had spelled it wrong too, but didn't feel like looking it up at the time. i'm also far too lazy to exert the effort to fix it. i can see the doms shaking their heads now as they read that last sentence :D

A reply to no-one in particular..

I know many incredibly smart people who can't spell worth a darn.
I also know some "well educated" folks that are not in touch with reality.. they might be able to spell and use correct grammar, but otherwise they make no sense at all.
In a forum post I can overlook mistakes. (I make a few myself) When typing quickly and trying to get one's thoughts down, it can be easy to flub up.
On the other side of the forum, it is important to put your best foot forward. Good grammar, punctuation and spelling make a good impression.

JustaTop -> RE: Poor Grammer and Spelling means what? (10/25/2005 11:47:55 PM)

I can forgive a few typos.

It's when the entire thing is so badly written as to be unintelligible that I wonder.

What else are they deficient in?[&:]

I mean,reading and writing are BASIC skills,no?

Okay, Mr. Obtuse here. Hi. In the title header for this thread, "Grammar" is misspelled on purpose, right?

There have been some good posts here. But I cant answer why the other threads were started. I can only answer you about mine. As I read profiles, I found it curious that many people specifically mentioned poor spelling or gammar in their profile as something they didnt like getting from people messaging them. My oppinion on the matter exactly reflects yours and Im happy to see your post.

TearCollector

i was taught english grammar as well as literature; they were two different subjects when i was in school. Back in the day, i could diagram sentences with the best of them. i also had vocabulary, where i did less well due to my inability to memorise big chunks of infomration.

i do want an intelligent Man as my Dom or Master; but i believe intelligence comes in many forms; linquistic; artistic; musical; mathematical; etc. and not everyone has been blessed with the same degree of ability to communicate in words. i myself cringe when i see spelling mistakes in profiles, but i will also admit i'm not able to proofread my own material immediately and i needed to make several corrections to my profile, which i hope is now correct.

i understand the point John Warren and others have made, but for me, if i can parse out what was being said, a post is sufficient. i have no demands as to proper english/spelling in emails or posts. i will admit there is a "floor"; a manner of writing so confusing as to sentence structure, etc., that i truely have difficulty understanding what is being said...but such posts are rare.

i suppose it is my desire to include as many members as possible, irrespective of their wordsmithing, and to endeavor to understand as they have endeavored to communicate.

Theres also something called Dyslexia. Many people suffer from it, and no dictionary is going to help that. I don't think poor spelling or grammar "show" anything at all.
