i would agree with MzMia, no matter what!
On this particular matter, MLK is a universal figure for all of humanity, the rest of the world should celebrate his birthday with us ... anything short of that would be negligence!

Silly woman, haven't you learn it's not size of the brain, but the skill with which it spins that wins the PR battle

I live in Chicago.....not quite Boston....but still a segregated city.Domiguy might have a different perspective but I have seen things improve greatly. I think it is largely a function of economy. In this city it used to be if a black person moved into your neighborhood ALL the white people left in a hurry. That has changed and now maybe......jusy maybe people are learning to live together a little more

Jeff

I would ask domiguy what he thinks, but I'm afraid...you ask him. And while you're at it, ask him if he feels more comfortable in Chicago as opposed to someplace like Jena or Alexandria, La.

I saw a documentary on MLK on CNN over the weekend - several times in fact, as it was the only English channel I could get in Prague!

When I think about it, the struggle he headed - because I accept there were many involved, became about far more than removing obnoxious laws and practices based on the colour of a person's skin, and this is why he and his movement is relevant to all of us. Because to my mind at least, the underlying message of judging others by the content of their character, not according to received prejudicial custom, is so universally applicable and has I believe over the decades since come to represent the core value in the struggle for all manner of changes in social attitudes to those considered "other".

Yes, there is more to be done, but the iron grip of what I will describe as "Christian" ideology over how we deal with those who are "other", has been loosened. I for one cannot imagine LGBT rights for example, ever having been so much as considered in the world pre the black rights movement, but that movement, aimed as it was at the most blatantly ridiculous prejudices, opened space for debate and the questioning and changing of all manner of similar injustices, which would have otherwise gone unquestioned.

So, in my opinion we all owe a debt to MLK and the movement for which he was the figurehead. Whether celebration is the right way to remember this contribution I'm not so sure when there is so much of the battle left to be won, but we all should take a moment to reflect on the better society it helped to produce.

Ah yes.. I figured. Sadly any awareness of MLK or his message still has to filter through to Eastern European societies. I tried preaching tolerance to the Poles, and given the hermetic nature of Polonia (the expatriate community of Poles in places like Chicago) I can understand what pahunkboy is writing about here. Give it another 5-10 years and this should change.

It would only be a proper tribute to MLK if MzMIa and braniac were to engage in some soulful lez action. Aside from making a statement about how far we have come in dealing with race relations it would also allow us to use braniacsub's facial expressions as a barometer as to how "fresh" MzMia is down there.

Anywhooooo, Jeff is probably right that things are not quite as fucked up as they used to be in Chicago....But it is an extremely...Extremely polarized city...White people don't blink an eye if some "colored" folk move into the neighborhood because they have to be fairly affluent. Chicago has gone through a tremendous amount of gentrification as of late...Whitey has just been booting damn near everyone out of the way as they have spread to new parts of the city....It's actually been rather fun for everyone involved.

When I think of MLK I don't only about think about race relations...They have improved in most places....What I think is about the dream....It can apply to all....But are we truly livng up to our expectations? Have blacks really followed up and pushed for more acceptance and a piece of the pie? Have they done enough to deserve more than they have recieved? Or have they just been placated to live a life of the lower middle class? The differences are still dramatic....Public schools in "black" neighborhoods are for the most part ridiculous. The police presence is different as to how they respond and making sure one's rights are not violated . How politicians respond to the needs of their constituents is also different depending upon race. I don't think that whitey has any love lost when it comes to their black brothers and sisters....But in reality that is, unfortunately, how the world works...You look after your "own." White folks just don't give a shit whether Shaneequa can read or gets a fair shake in court or whether her neighborhood is going down the fuckin' drain....The other part of the equation which MLK was pushing for was for blacks to take action....lol. Those days are long fucking gone. If lil' Tommy gets killed in a drive by the reverends quickly gather for a photo op and a meaningless speech and march and then the next day it's business back to usual....Until the next child gets gunned down....Rinse...Wash...Repeat.

A friend of mine visited the King Center....I recall that she said there was a place where people were asked to leave a note about "The dream and the progress being made today"...If asked the question today how would one honestly answer?

More importantly, I can see a day in the not so distant future where all domiguy's regardless of color will be able to break the chains of moderation and post at will.....Free at last....Free at last..Thank God almighty...I am free at last.

You see, now this is what I am talking about. Must you always be so vulgar and juvenile? Do you think people sacrifice the precious minutes of their day to log on here and read vile and salacious musings of hot girl-on-girl action? I think not. They come here to learn and be educated and participate in intellectual discourse. It's no wonder you are on moderation, and deservedly so.

Seriously now, you are so very correct here. MLK's dream of equality was more than just normalized race relations and has never been fully realized. There is alot of blame and responsibility to share on all sides.

On a side note here - this past summer I went to New Orleans, just out of curiousity and I wanted to see what was left since the hurricane. Alexandria is only a couple hours north of there so I decided to drive up, look around the old neighborhood, and of course I wanted to see Jesse Jackson who was leading a protest there. I think MLK would be very disappointed in the Reverand and his buddy Al Sharpton. He would be turning over in his grave at the shenanigans of those two. Just my opinion, of course.

It astounds me that as we move past another anniversary of Dr. King's birth that we are stiil so preoccupied by race.

I can only pray that the day might arrive when we will no longer judge a man by the color of his avatar.

Can I get free cheese?
