I saw a documentary on MLK on CNN over the weekend - several times in fact, as it was the only English channel I could get in Prague! When I think about it, the struggle he headed - because I accept there were many involved, became about far more than removing obnoxious laws and practices based on the colour of a person's skin, and this is why he and his movement is relevant to all of us. Because to my mind at least, the underlying message of judging others by the content of their character, not according to received prejudicial custom, is so universally applicable and has I believe over the decades since come to represent the core value in the struggle for all manner of changes in social attitudes to those considered "other". Yes, there is more to be done, but the iron grip of what I will describe as "Christian" ideology over how we deal with those who are "other", has been loosened. I for one cannot imagine LGBT rights for example, ever having been so much as considered in the world pre the black rights movement, but that movement, aimed as it was at the most blatantly ridiculous prejudices, opened space for debate and the questioning and changing of all manner of similar injustices, which would have otherwise gone unquestioned. So, in my opinion we all owe a debt to MLK and the movement for which he was the figurehead. Whether celebration is the right way to remember this contribution I'm not so sure when there is so much of the battle left to be won, but we all should take a moment to reflect on the better society it helped to produce.
