Maybe im an asshole for suggesting it... but what kind of parent is a prison inmate gonna be anyway? I mean if someone is in prison for, lets say knocking over a liquor store and killing 5 people, do you really think they might win "Mommy of the year"?

I don't believe acting in a criminal manner--breaking the law--in any way correlates into being a bad parent.

Just a comment...I'm from Missouri…you have no idea what a bitter pill this decision is to swallow for state government.

Missouri is no longer led by Kansas City and St. Louis democrats… the new power in Missouri is Springfield and rural Republicans. Very right wing, Bible belt, and pro-life.

The heart of this debate has been simmering for over a year and is abortion. Neither side cares about the mother or the baby or their rights.

When you choose to break the law you place your child at risk of all kinds of horrible things (prision being at the safe end of the risk spectrum), sounds like bad parenting to me, and incredibly selfish.  At the least someone with real problems who is uncapable of safley taking care of a child.

subtee -> RE: Missouri must allow inmates abortions (1/23/2008 10:50:03 AM)

What if a mother broke the law to feed her child?

mnottertail -> RE: Missouri must allow inmates abortions (1/23/2008 10:51:51 AM)

The law, in its majestic equality, forbids the rich as well as the poor to sleep under bridges, to beg in the streets, and to steal bread.
Anatole France, The Red Lily, 1894, chapter 7
French novelist (1844 - 1924)

Nothing new under the sun.

That's right. Nor does it investigate motives that might be other than "bad" or care. "You do the crime, you do the time." Bah.

So all I'm saying is a person might not be a "bad" parent even if he or she has committed a crime.

[Edited to add: Ron you're turning me on...]

mnottertail -> RE: Missouri must allow inmates abortions (1/23/2008 11:04:32 AM)

I think you would be much happier with Anatole France or Herman Goering, after all, they said these things; not I.

I just remember parts of their quotes and look them up, so for all intents and purposes, I am just a librarian in the abyss of windy declamation.

No good shall come of this, I can assure you.

Too bad, you're literary and I dig it. I will not apologize, mister.

You two should get a room.............a private reading room at the local library.

Subtee, can you lay out a specific example?  In all I could think of there are other ways to feed a kid, that place the family in much less danger.  A mom in Prision for stealing bread?  I just don't believe that is real.

Yeah, it's hard to find a "downside" here.
Odds that these women's kids are going to end up "in the system" like them are probably extremely high anyway.

I don't understand why this item is making the news. Healthcare is healthcare, so if a prisonner needs a medical intervention, the state has a duty of care towards that prisonner.

What's the big debate?

Because a significant portion of the population doesn't see it as healthcare.

To me, it's reading an article about how the state's now allowing felons to kill their babies.  I'm having to take comfort in the act that such an early euthinization will spare them a life with such monsters.

Edit:  Backquote added.

Well it's all hypothetical, yes? I'm just saying engaging in a criminal activity does not correlate to whether or not someone is nurturing, caring, affectionate, wise, strong and all other desirable attributes for a parent to possess and express. The situation may not be best for the child, but that doesn't make the parent "bad," it seems to me.

[Disclaimer: I have no criminal record or past, but I would like to be frisked and cuffed...~smile]

luckydog1 -> RE: Missouri must allow inmates abortions (1/23/2008 12:25:05 PM)

I don't see risking your familly by committing crimes that can get you sent to prision, as wise or strong or paticularly nuturing.  If it were a mom actually stealing beans and rice to feed her hungry kids, that would be one thing, but you don't go to prision for that.  Technically a woman driving a few miles over the speed limit is a criminal, and that does not make one a bad mom.  I am talking about Crimes that get you sent to prision.

kittinSol -> RE: Missouri must allow inmates abortions (1/23/2008 1:01:09 PM)

No - abortion is a constitutional right when the health of the mother is threatened by the pregnancy - mental health or otherwise.

Therefore, it does qualify as a medical act. Regardless of your personal feelings a propos abortion, it is a legal medical procedure.

As to call the women monsters, I beg you to reconsider your choice of vocabulary: there are a lot of women on this site who have had abortions - your comment was nothing short of offensive.
