Level,

This is like compairing athletes and sports teams from one era
to those of another.  Keeping in mind when it was made I vote for
Forbidden Planet which introduced Robbie The Robot.

I am also partial to The Day The Earth Stood Still

While I adored Dune and Serenity and Starship Troopers, my all-time favorite (and, admittedly a crossover into horror) is Event Horizon.

BitaTruble -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/25/2008 11:33:30 PM)

Three I would add to the list:

V for Vendetta
Back to the Future
ET

For the choices up there .. hell, Level. I hate making decisions and most of those are in my tops for favorite movies of all time. So, I haven't voted yet because I can't decide.

what?  no "Dune"?

and here I thought you was sumpthin special, Level...*sniff*

and on that vein...what?  no "Plan 9 From Outer Space"? [:D]

lol i agree though I was also surprised that logans run wasnt on the list.

Manawyddan -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/26/2008 5:20:13 AM)

It was a hard pick ... really none of these films are in my top 25 (and none of my top 3 are science fiction). I voted for 2001 more for its historic importance than anything else.

Oh man, I had not thought about Event Horizon.

Another one that I am surprised no one else has mentioned is Faranheit 451.

Can we tell that I like the classics lol. [:)]

oh what about the 5th element?
and rocky horror is the epitome of greatness (i didn't know sci fi musicals counted as well)

bipolarber -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/26/2008 6:20:49 AM)

Unfortunately, I consider most of the movies on the list to be science fantasy, rather than science fiction. Most of them just use the trappings of science fiction to tell a good story that could just as easily be told as a western, or a horror movie, or an action adventure flick.
The exception is 2001, of course. But, it still relies on god-like aliens and their "magic" doorway to other worlds for the third act.

No, in my opinion, the best science fiction story ever put on film was "The Andromeda Strain."

Fifth Element...for myself...as a movie with a plot line, I thought it totally sucked....but if I was to look only at the sci-fi angle; yes, it rocked.

and sorry, but rocky horror seemed too much like a comedy to me [&:]

Difficult choice - but The Matrix wins out for me for three reasons;

1) it made it possible to talk about Gnosticism and for people to get it, in some way at least. As an unknown subject to many, it was very difficult to discuss before, and its so fascinating to discuss
2) like all good stories (inlcuding many in this selection), it has enormous social relevance if one can see past the gunfights etc (which nevertheless are great!)
3) ........ and most importantly - it has Keanu Reeves!

sci fi's can't be funny?

I did not say that; Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy is a wonderful merging of sci-fi and comedy; and for me ( in other words, in my opinion ) it works.

What I said was that Rocky Horror Picture Show, to me ( again, which translates to...in my opinion ) was more comedy than sci-fi...in other words, I found nothing science fiction about it at all; it was nothing more than a cheesy comedy.

Bipolarber; I have to ask.

Why would you say that Andromeda Strain is the best? I have seen it several times, and while I admit that it belongs up there with the best, I would still have to say that Faranheit 451 tops it [8D]

LadyEllen -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/26/2008 8:46:53 AM)

I agree Irish Mist - and I think the distinction comes down to whether the piece has something to say about the world, whether it sheds light on the human and social condition (crikey, I almost sounded intelligent there) - though maybe I'm missing the point in the Rocky Horror Show, apart from the fun!

the other thread/poll about science fiction books reminded me of the original "1,000 Leagues Under the Sea".  that wasn't bad either.

Cheesy??? What? Them's fightin' words! [8D] Come on, it had lasers, and a Triple-Contact Faggot Magnet, and sonic transducers, and a Medusa machine... how many of the other movies had a Medusa machine, huh? None.

i rest my case! [:)]

The Sci-Fi channel did a Dune mini-series which is available on DVD. The fx leave something to be desired, but the indoor sets, costumes and acting are quite good. Worth a rainy Saturday/sick day marathon.

I’ve seen the Sci-Fi mini-series and I agree it was a far sight better than the movie, still no comparison to the book though.

V for Vendetta

Never really thought of V for Vendetta as a sci-fi movie but it is definitely one of my favorites and is in my DVD collection.

And while we are on the subject of "V" does anybody remember the mini-series V? I thought it started out great but quickly turned ridiculous.

Level -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/26/2008 12:13:38 PM)

I remember V, barely.  [:D]

I didn't care for the film version that much (Farrah or not), but I liked the book (still have it somewhere).

Kana -> RE: Best science fiction movie of all time (1/26/2008 1:37:38 PM)

Blade runner

but as an aside I would toss in Brazil
