Now, now...it's not that bad. Keep your chin up there woman! Some people are suffering more than others right now, certainly, but we are no where near a depression. I am not even convinced we are in a recession. The ship is not sinking, it's listing slightly.

I am standing on what I feel, I don't depend on government reports only to inform me.

I FEEL we are in a recession, quickly spiraling downwards towards a deepening serious
recession, and my mind is made up.

We can certainly agree, to disagree here.
When things get much worse, drop me a line.

Mia, can I ask you what line of work you are in? If you don't want to share on a public board, I understand. I was just curious as to whether you work in a segment of the market that has been particularly affected by this economy.

True...the whole NAMBLA thing didn't help either i just wish the politicians would quit the mud slinging and actually get with the issues instead of concerning themselves with snide remarks about each other.

The Dems sucked last year...and they aren't exactly proving themselves this year either sadly.

Actually brainiac, I work in a pretty much recession proof job.
Unless I do something really crazy, or way off I will be set.
I changed careers 7 years ago, and I decided to go into a field,
where I could go to any of the 50 states and get a job real quick.

But you know, I don't care how well I am doing.
IF many of the people around me are not doing that well, it concerns me.

I would not care if I were a Billionaire, if the ship is sinking I am concerned.

But that is just me.
The world is much bigger than how well off Mia is doing.

Hey, I get it. I know that some people are feeling it more than others. I would imagine that if one were in the construction business, one would certainly believe we are heading for depression with new housing starts being at 30 yr lows. I also understand that there can be a domino effect and one failing economic indicator can trigger others. But, at the present the national economy is not that bad. Unemployment nationally is at less than 5%. There is cause for concern, but heading for the life boats is a bit drastic, don't you think?

I hear you, Mia. I am also pretty secure, although not entirely recession proof. I was deeply adversely affected by the tech recession of 2000. I too care when others are hurting. I was just curious as to why your gloomy perspective, that's all. But I get it.

How to Stop the Downturn - New York Times

CNNMoney.com Pre-Market Report - Jan. 28, 2008

I read the NYT article. First it was an op-ed piece - in other words, written by a nobody. It was just some citizens opinion. And, he admitted in the first paragraph that (paraphrased) 'well, maybe we aren't officially headed for recession, but we have to take note of the pending slowdown.'

I haven't looked at the CNN article.

Hey, I hope I am right, too. But I am taking the necessary steps to protect myself like you are, just in case. :)

I am in real-estate... Oh and I feel it.  But the only thing one that can do that "feels it"would be,  you get knocked down, you get back up again, get training and find a new line of work.  LOL But it is seriously hard being a single parent.  Its nice to have parents to rely on.  Sadly however, I think Bush has let the economy degrade to such a serious state of financial crappiness-  To bad he spent so much time focusing on the war.  Not that it is ALL his fault the economy is the way it is, because the market can only go up so much.  It was only bound to topple.  I do not claim to know much of anything about the Market or economy, but I can tell you it sucks.  In a bad way :p  Here to a new president, and hopes of a better economy in the future.

No.  Gore's attempts to steal the election were stopped by the Supreme Court, after his sore-loser act really pissed a lot of people off.  Does it bother you that Nixon had more class than Al?

It's called an Electoral College.  Google it.

From my perspective I tend to focus on the science aspects of Bush's BS- and it's pretty bad.  In his speech he called for our wonderful R+ D establishment to bail us out of the energy mess.

The reality?

1)  Funding for NSF, DOE etc. was cut.  Nancy Pelosi was supposed to go to bat for an increase in federal funding for these agencies, but folded like a wet dishrag.
2)  Current grantees aren't actually getting checks from the federal gov't- money is being diverted to Iraq.
3)  Clean coal is a sick joke.  That we're spending billions on this nonsense and so little on solar, biofuels, or wind, shows that Bush is NOT interested in solving the energy issues.

The blather about No Child Left Behind- an act which should be called No Child Gets Ahead?  And funding closing parochial schools is idiotic for two reasons- why are we supporting religion in schools with federal tax dollars?  And if these schools are closing- why is a federal bailout going to solve the problem long term?  Also (I guess this is three) why not fix the failing schools?

I just get so furious when I hear this guy talk- he's both stupid and a liar.

Sam

I got bored after about ten minutes and went into my bedroom to whack off. When I came back out it was still on and I got board again after another ten minutes so I flipped my copy of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest into the DVD player.

I did find one thing interesting, though – how obvious it was that both Cheney and Pelosi absolutely loath having to sit next to one another.

exactly.. it was the differance of "popular vote" and electoral college. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0876793.html

this is why them stopping the count in Fla. while Dubbya was ahead ( how bloody convenient) pissed off so many who knew about govt.

Florida has 25 Electorial votes.. only Texas ( which will always be Republican) has more at 32, and Ca. at 54.

Those who do not know how thier govts work are doomed to be shafted by it.
