Actually brainiac, I work in a pretty much recession proof job.
Unless I do something really crazy, or way off I will be set.
I changed careers 7 years ago, and I decided to go into a field,
where I could go to any of the 50 states and get a job real quick.

But you know, I don't care how well I am doing.
IF many of the people around me are not doing that well, it concerns me.

I would not care if I were a Billionaire, if the ship is sinking I am concerned.

But that is just me.
The world is much bigger than how well off Mia is doing.

Mia, exactly, I'm doing well but that doesn't mean I don't want to see everyone else doing well too!
And in one minute Knucklehead was talking about helping "developing countries" but then telling us we have to "compete" in a global economy.
He shouldn't be concerning himself with foreign countries and FOCUS on America.
Too bad they didn't seat Obama and Hillary right next to each other! Maybe we would have seen some fireworks.
This speech was just the same old shit turned over again!

I have not seen the state of the union address.. yet. I tend to want to scream, and throw things any time I hear his freaking voice.. or see the inherant stupidity.

Sure.. go ahead and build a 621 mile wall... this from the very same govt that couldnt bother to keep the levies in NOLA in working condition.. and arent willing to pay to make them better then what they were *before* Katrina. I am not even going to go into all of the crap this admin has done...

But if he says anything about staying the course... I swear.. ya'll will hear me screaming from way down here in Fl.

It was very telling when Knucklehead said he wants to make the tax cuts permanent. All the Republicans stood up and clapped while the Democrats just sat there like Cheshire cats with embarrassed grins on their faces! lol
Democrats think all that *Taxpayer money* should be in the hands of the government instead evidently.

Don't have television, didn't watch listen / to it, and what he says / does regards some bi-partisan economic stimulus plan.... won't matter.

On the other side.....I'll be smiling like five Cheshire cats when Bush and the Republicans substantially finagle and raise/extend the threshold on the death tax before they leave office.

No.  Gore's attempts to steal the election were stopped by the Supreme Court, after his sore-loser act really pissed a lot of people off.  Does it bother you that Nixon had more class than Al?

It's called an Electoral College.  Google it.

If all votes in Florida were counted Bush lost Florida by a substantial margin. The would have meant Gore would have won. The Supreme Court stopped the recount because it could cause irreperable harm to Bush, the temporary injunction, and then argued that there wasn't enough time to do a proper recount and allowed the known to be incorrect result to be certified by Bush's state campaign manager.

He was appointed by the SCOTUS. And yes Gore had more class the Nixon. Gore told his supporters to cease their attempts to get the actual winner sworn in once the SCOTUS ruled. Nixon pepetuated the claim that he would have won in 1960 if Daley hadn't cheated to give IL to Kennedy, which since anyone who cares to look at the actual vote totals and electoral college numbers can tell you is simply wrong. Actually all that the GOP recount in 1960 accomplished was in switching Hawaii to a Kennedy win.

Ranger, everyone is against that tax!
Why should people pay taxes all their lives and then when they die "the govt" gets *another* piece of everything they made?
I have to side with the Republicans on taxes, there's no such thing as a "good" tax.

That's why Obama will lose if he's nominated.
You can't go against 90% of the American People and try to push "amnesty" for illegal aliens and expect to win.

Hi popeye... below is what Obama says... I see nothing about amnesty... His ideas are good... I believe and the way to go... especially penalties for employers who hire undocumented immigrants

The Problem
Undocumented population is exploding: The number of undocumented immigrants in the country has increased more than 40 percent since 2000. Every year, more than a half-million people come illegally or illegally overstay their visas.
Immigration bureaucracy is broken: The immigration bureaucracy is broken and overwhelmed, forcing legal immigrants to wait years for applications.
Immigration raids are ineffective: Despite a sevenfold increase in recent years, immigration raids only netted 3,600 arrests in 2006 and have placed all the burdens of a broken system onto immigrant families.
Barack Obama's Plan
Create Secure Borders
Obama wants to preserve the integrity of our borders. He supports additional personnel, infrastructure and technology on the border and at our ports of entry.
Improve Our Immigration System
Obama believes we must fix the dysfunctional immigration bureaucracy and increase the number of legal immigrants to keep families together and meet the demand for jobs that employers cannot fill.
Remove Incentives to Enter Illegally
Obama will remove incentives to enter the country illegally by cracking down on employers who hire undocumented immigrants.
Bring People Out of the Shadows
Obama supports a system that allows undocumented immigrants who are in good standing to pay a fine, learn English, and go to the back of the line for the opportunity to become citizens.
Work with Mexico
Obama believes we need to do more to promote economic development in Mexico to decrease illegal immigration.
Barack Obama's Record
  • Crack Down on Employers: Obama championed a proposal to create a system so employers can verify that their employees are legally eligible to work in the U.S.
  • Fix the Bureaucracy: Obama joined Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-IL) to introduce the Citizenship Promotion Act to ensure that immigration application fees are both reasonable and fair. Obama also introduced legislation that passed the Senate to improve the speed and accuracy of FBI background checks.
  • Respect Families: Obama introduced amendments to put greater emphasis on keeping immigrant

Kdsub, LOL, that's why he's going to lose!
It says up there; "immigrant families", ah,....what does he mean by that?
"Immigrant families" are already here legally.
Oh, and "in good standing", does that mean I can rob a bank and get away with it IF, I'm in , "good standing?
I like Mitt Romney's plan better.
All illegals go home and go to the back of the line like everyone else.

exactly.. it was the differance of "popular vote" and electoral college. http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0876793.html

this is why them stopping the count in Fla. while Dubbya was ahead ( how bloody convenient) pissed off so many who knew about govt.

Florida has 25 Electorial votes.. only Texas ( which will always be Republican) has more at 32, and Ca. at 54.

Those who do not know how thier govts work are doomed to be shafted by it.

Gwyn

I know how my government works and I'm still getting shafted by it.

Other Random thoughts.

Been reading some very good material on Mexico lately.  Check the dates on when this happened http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1994_economic_crisis_in_Mexico.  I've yet to find any hard data to support this, but illegal immigration started to skyrocket around this time.  Note also that the peso very severly inflated/devauled during this same time frame and has been slowly recovering ever since.

On the subject of taxes, that little "tax rebate" of his is a complete oxymoron, as Bush/Congress is BORROWING the money from the Fed to give it to us ( just merely getting tacked on to the total federal debt to a privately owned corporation, the Federal Reserve Sytem, Inc. http://www.save-a-patriot.org/files/view/frcourt.html )

As for the state of the union address, I didn't even know it was on tonight, I've long since stopped caring about anything on mainstream news.  Bush is a tool, nothing more.  The upcoming election means practically nothing, as I've yet to see anything that makes one candidate stand out from another aside from red herring issues (ron paul aside, incidentally who I'm voting for).

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- A comprehensive study of the 2000 presidential election in Florida suggests that if the U.S. Supreme Court had allowed a statewide vote recount to proceed, Republican candidate George W. Bush would still have been elected president.

The National Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago conducted the six-month study for a consortium of eight news media companies, including CNN.

Suppose that Gore got what he originally wanted -- a hand recount in heavily Democratic Broward, Palm Beach, Miami-Dade and Volusia counties. The study indicates that Gore would have picked up some additional support but still would have lost the election -- by a 225-vote margin statewide.

http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2001/florida.ballots/stories/main.html

That whole clusterfuck almost caused me to chuck my membership in the Democratic party.

I will say that this was the best speech I've ever heard G W give. Only one joke, no stutters, no "eh eh", no confusion on the right hand versus the left, and no looking down at his notes over and over again. Regardless of what was written in the speech, Bush actually read this one out very well to presidental standards.

Man, this really the night for "if you don't get it, you won't" sorts of questions, isn't it.

Someday, Owner you are going to see what your side is willing to do to win, and you'll have to live with knowing you helped.

Name the worst thing the Democrats have ever done to win a race. I'll bet anything you care to wager that I can trump it with something GWB's campaigns have done. I will require specifics not vague claims though.

Do you really want to spend the whole night Googling, Ken?  Your links vs. mine, as it it disintegrates into Watergate and who REALLY assassinated the Kennedy's?

How about discussing the idea of the Clinton's "the ends justify any means" somehow proving they need to be restored to the White House?  You want examples?  See a few of the threads right now.  The son of a woman who endorsed Obama is under attack, along with a back-handed slap at JFK's daughter.

     Obtuse is boring.

This is really worse than making up lies about a man's military service? What about implying that a man has had an interracial extramarital affair in a pamphlet you won't even take credit for?

As to Clinton's campaign strategy, let us not forget that Bush I and Lee Atwater's hatchet job on Dukakis made it clear that the Democratic nominee in 1992 had to be perfectly willing to defend himself vigorously from any slur no matter how infantile. That the sort of people good at that also gave as good as they got should come as no surprise to anyone. I personally will be intrigued to see how this pans out as the campaigns roll into next Tuesday. I hope that both campaigns back away from the precipice and hold this stuff until one is facing a GOP candidate but we'll see soon enough.

I will give you credit for trying to make it out like Clinton somehow invented the modern dirty campaign.

Mia, both Obama and Clinton voted for that Kennedy/ McCain/Bush amnesty.
How can Independants like me vote for them?
Enforcing our laws is not an "option" for people in elected office!
And Bush hopefully will "go quietly" into retirement.

You hit the nail on the head.
Most of them are all the same these days, that is why I am an Independent Moderate.

Bush Obama, Clinton.....does not make much difference.
IF the Democrats dare think they can raise taxes?
Or IF anyone dares to raise taxes, I think people will riot.

The Middle Class and Lower Middle Class has been sold out down the damn river.

Did he mention we are smack dab in a recession?????

I'm always amazed when people bash paying taxes.

Where do you think money for schools, roads, defense, and other programs come from?

Taxes have always been around for as long as people live in communities so that the community can take care of the matters that affect everyone.

You don't want taxed? Go live in a cave by yourself because that's the only way it can be avoided.

As for Democrats raising taxes, perhaps people need to look at who would benefit from the Bush cuts and stop drinking the Kool'Ade that it will help everyone.

And yet when Democrats don't do it people complain that they don't have a backbone or can't win.

If dirty politics didn't sway enough voters it wouldn't be done.

Go look in a mirror and ask yourself how often you've been swayed by lies and deceit from a politician before you put all the blame on them. -- the "you" here is for all of us it isn't person specific.

Carter, Dukakis and Kerry tried the we're better than this route. In order to keep the easy "answers" GOP from absolutely destroying this country we have to have candidates willing to beat the GOP candidate no matter what tactics is used against them.
