I saw more younger people without teeth in the US than i ever have in the UK. I think both countries have many people with dental problems.

Everybody loves america espeicially the taliban :) we all just secretly hate england shhhh dont tell anybody

MissMorrigan -> RE: ouch- USA people hated (2/1/2008 3:06:06 AM)

the funny thing is that when I was in Dallas, more attention was paid to one's appearance, so I'd regularly see girls getting their manicures, yet it wasn't uncommon to see a hole in the sole of their shoes (I only notice b/c you can tell a lot about a person by the state of their feet/shoes)... it's a question of priorities.

What about the typical ' American Smile'

I know this is going back a long time, but we had an American kid at school, fresh from Miami and he had the American smile, basically a mouth full of bright clean teeth as though he had been chomping apples all his life. Bright clean teeth all welded together with a brace.

Reminded me of the Osmond smile.

In fact it was the first time I heard the term, American Smile

( mind now looking back, I pity him, from sunny Miami to rainy North West England, thrown into a Lancastrian school with a bunch of thick and thick sounding Northeners with their ' eees' and 'ooos' and 'arrrrs' , expressions I had trouble with, as I was half Cornish and spoke with a largely South Western accent).

Funny you say that. You wouldnt have the internet or the PC if it wasnt for those undereducated Americans. We are the creative innovators who dare to dream and try.

Except you didnt invent either, nor the railways or the telephone.

Actually, they did. Look it up. The Personal Computer was created by the 2 Steves. The founders of the Apple corporation. The first prototype of the World wide web was created by
Doug Engelbart who was born in Oregon in 1925 and created the mouse and the frist hypertext prototype. You can look that up too.

The internet as we know it was invented by Tim Berners Lee. The idea of a personal computer is American but wasnt invented by Apple although i concede it was an American whose name i forget. The first computer was invented by Charles Babbage In London, over 150 years ago

RCdc -> RE: ouch- USA people hated (2/1/2008 3:38:25 AM)

The internet was not 'invented' by simply one or two people.  It was a collabouration of many people.  However the majority ofthese people were american.

The WWW as we know it today was down to Tim Berners Lee.

The computer was invented by British engineer Charles Babbage, based on a previous idea of a german in the hessian army of the difference engine.

The first programmable computer would be by another german, Konrad Zuse.

The two steves helped make the computer more popular, but didn't 'invent' it.  They were salesmen.

The altair was one of the first personal computers and created in an american company.

luscious, just google all the names and I am sure you will find the info you want.

I will say I feel a lot of shame in this country.  I feel we should expect far more from ourselves, yet we just dig holes, and tend to be blind to all outside of our city, state, country...That is awful.  I feel we are arrogant, greedy, ignorant, and self rightious...But I cant say we are the worst.  I cant say if I were in any other country I wouldnt feel the same sinking sadness, its humanity I worry about, as a whole.  I dont get the flag thing, or the "proud to be" thing, honestly, when did we start being a whole, or defyned by where we are born?!?!  When did we stop being just people?  But I am weird like that, I also believe that my mother and father and who they are in no way determines who I will be, go figure

I said the PC was invented by Americans. I never said the Computer was.

Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak made a natural team inventing the first ready-made personal computer. To Wozniak's engineering talent, Jobs added ingenuity and marketing instincts, the ingredients that tuned Apple into a billion-dollar company.
When the two first met, Wozniak (born August 11,1950) was 18, Jobs (born 1955) only 13. The pair put their electronics and inventing talents to work making unusual devices, and a few years later purchased a $25 microprocessor with the intention of building a computer. Although this first computer was crude and came without memory, a power supply or even a keyboard, it was very reliable. Jobs and Wozniak decided on a name that would convey the simplicity of the product's design and use: the Apple.

Jobs had a passionate belief in bringing computer technology to everyone. So in 1977, Jobs and Wozniak started a company to build and distribute their invention. In true American-dream fashion, their company began in a garage.

To finance their venture, Jobs sold his Volkswagen van and Wozniak sold his programmable calculator to raise $1,300. Weeks later, Jobs secured the company's first sale: 50 Apple I computers at $666 each. In a mere six years, Apple was listed in the Fortune 500, becoming the youngest firm on this prestigious list.

You focused on the fact that the computer was not an american invention. This is true. But you must also concede that many more things came before the WWW . The ability to Hypertext at all had already been invented.

Foititis -> RE: ouch- USA people hated (2/1/2008 5:01:57 AM)

People need something to rally behind in times of crisis, whether it be a charismatic warlord, a powerful religious figure or the symbol of their nation. It’s a natural human reaction and we've been doing it for at the very least all of recorded history.
I think that Americans just really took it to the 'next level' with the patriotism.
Just quietly I think looking for a crutch every time life throws you a curve ball is a dire weakness, but I’m just a cynical bastard.

You are completely wrong.  The invention of computing machines has nothing to do with your claim that Americans never invented the PC. They are two different things, and the PC was in fact invented in America exactly as described.

And the WWW and the Internet are also two different things... the Internet having been around in one form or another since the 60s, and in well established use by that name since the 80s...clearly before Lee's 1990 introduction of the WWW.

Some portion of America's bad reputation has to be laid at the feet of those so jingoistic or xenophobic, that they are willing to foment lies about it.

As an American who considers myself a patriot (yes, I was raised on the Pledge of Allegience, hand on heart, salute the flag), I think that this country, as a whole, has gotten a bit too big for our britches in many ways.  Call it hubris.  The fact that so many people were screaming "HOW DARE THEY" after 9/11, to me, only illustrates just how cocky we've (generic) gotten.
But what's GOOD about America?
Take a road trip...criss cross the country.  We have plains, mountains, deserts, tropical, tundra..name it, and we've got almost every kind of climate and landscape all wrapped up within our borders.
Visit the small towns. Where people still greet strangers with a hello and a smile (ok, you can find that in the big cities too, but I think it's mostly people who've moved there from the small towns that do it..LOL) and no ulterior motive.
I could go on, but I would like to see other Americans say what THEY think is good....

Andrea - Proud to be an American (which isn'tpreventing me from moving to the UK..LOL)

Well said ,Andrea.

Why, thank you :)

What was it that some Yank said once?

Something about pleasing some people all the time and everyone some of the time.....?

I really wouldnt worry about it. I'd lay a bet right now that those who hate you for being American never met a single one of you; what they hate is the stereotypical image they have in their head of what an American is, which is derived from the filtered information they get through their TV screens, and which tends to focus on the bad, the stupid and the outrageous. Funny though, how they all queue up to see your films and listen to your bands.....

I'll admit now, before I got on CM and actually interacted with Americans quite a bit, my only impressions were of religious nutjobs, rampant gun and drug crime, fabulous wealth next to abject poverty with no middle ground, spectacular ignorance and breathtaking arrogance. Yes, all that is likely still true of some Americans and America, but thanks to CM I realise its not the general reality - just the titillating bits that make the news over here.

bipolarber -> RE: ouch- USA people hated (2/1/2008 6:52:11 AM)

Yes, yes, yes... the UK invented the computer! Tis true! And here we all are, typing away on our Babbage Mk XXXXVI's: the size of a small house, steam powered, and capable of a whopping 8k of internal memory!

If any of you are fans of PBS, you need to check out the series "Connections" hosted by James Burke. It'll wake you up to the fact that no one person, no one country ever invents anything. It's a process of taking some small invention here, and another one from there, and still others that some people had long since tossed in the dust bin, and put them all together and "poof" something new and wonderful pops out the other side.

Stop trying to claim this or that advance as a source of national pride. It's a foolish game indeed. Instead, marvel at the fact that we humans are a clever bunch overall.

If we Americans want to get upset about something, we should get upset about how a small group of religious fanatics forced us to turn our backs on stem cell research. A huge potential for knowledge and cures, and "Junior" bans it due to his luddite religious supporters. All the scientists who made it their life's work have gone elsewhere, and all the breakthroughs are happening... in Japan.

Meanwhile, the presidential candidates are actually talking about teaching creationisim in science classes...  WTF?!?!?

No one likes a bully- and will side witht he underdog.

I personally would not feel safe in any other country except for Canada.

There can be regional differences- and a huge difference in urban vs rural.  Typically one sees the gregarious outspoken personality - who is more likely to travel.

I agree that dressing here has become downright slothfull. Im like come on-= we have modern plumbing- go wild.

On teeth- I lost a front tooth after many years of putting money into it. Now it would cost $2100.00 to fix. Cheaper in Mexico.  $2100 per my mouth-vs emergency money- which makes more sense?  emergency money does. I can eat and talk. So i look less pretty.

As far as obesity- the globe need not cakle about the fat American....the globe is cathcing up per overweight compliments of fast food.
I am not obese- but I am also not a garbage dispoal unit.
hint hint.

America is explorative by nature. That is a strength.

As the song says- it is hard to be humble.

I dont go by the notion that no one else can be right- can have a good idea. In fact- I beleifve a good idea can stand on its own weight regardless of who thought of it.

Smiles

We all have to admit. The WWW making everything so instantaneous, has brought the world closer together. I still marvel at how I can chat with someone in almost RT who is so far away from me. It really has shrunk the world down to size and has made everyone practically my neighbor. We really have so much more in common than we have differences. The differences are really a refreshing different prespective that is usually much needed. I thank you, all of you in this Global community.

The concept of the personal computer was invented by a Scot by the name of MacIntosh whilst working for Apple in the States. This is why you have Apple Mac.

However the Americans invented the electric chair.
