ORIGINAL: ExSteelAgain It is an interesting question, but not one that is necessarily a meaningful statistic. There are studies that go into this question deeply to explain why someone votes Democratic or Republican. So for all our flowery idealism, the major factor is…drum roll… how your parents voted. The next major factor…how much money you make. So give me those two bits of information and I’ll bet even odds all day that I can predict an individual’s political preference no matter the other groups he/she is in. Well....I'm poor....and my parents are HARD core dems..... I however am VERY conservative, and Republican [;)] Perhaps I just grew out of it?....LOL Ah, let's examine this more closely. Looking at your profile, I can guess at your age, I also know that many in Virginia were yellow dog Democrats (that is not a derogatory term, but a historical one) about the time you were growing up. If you note in my post, I said I would use information about how your parents voted to determine your party affiliation, but I did not say I would pick you to be of the same party, given more information such as locale. I am a 44 year old mother of three(26; 23; 22) and grandmother of two(6 year old; 7 month old) I have been married to the same man for almost 25 years(as of Dec10th) I am also a high school drop out(if that matters, I did completed 10th grade) but passed the G.E.D. when I was in my early thirties. I was born and raised in Flint Michigan(ALL of my family was/is U.A.W.) I Moved to Norfolk area of Virginia at age twenty, as a Navy wife, and mother of one and a half(had a 2 y/o and one on the way) My husband and I have lived in Virginia 25 years now. He is no longer in the Navy, but works at a local shipyard, he is a mechanical engineer. What am I supposed to do, pick this apart and show how it relates to political affiliation? You've already said you vote Republican. Okay, you said your entire family in Michigan were UAW. Interesting, that you would include the mothers, grandmothers and children as being UAW. Solidarity and all that. Okay, that leads me to believe you vote the way your husband votes. He is retired Navy, a mechanical engineer, thus probably fits the income demographic that I referred to. Plus, a career military background would be a strong indicator. Now understand, nothing is 100% in predicting voting preferences, but each category would give me a better then 50-50 shot. Add them up and they can be fairly significant statistically in a large population. By the way, I feel like I know Flint, MI so well from Michael Moore's movie, Roger & Me....
