jackriddle -> Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 7:58:49 PM)

Hi,

I confess, I'm a social disaster... can't keep my mouth off 'bad' topics after dinner, namely religion, politics... and sex of course. People end up fighting, but hey, if it's not to talk about things that matter to us, why talk at all!

So I've had for a long time a question nagging me, mainly because I -for different reasons- never had access to any 'community' where I could exchange views with other like minded folks:

Is the D/s community leaning towards a specifical political side ?

Logically, I'd say that a man who likes to be served by a submissive woman should be having a more right wing/conservative state of mind... but that's my case and I'm rather on the other side.

I'd particularly love to hear views from anyone having had interactions with a wide range of people within the BDSM community... Did you notice anything? Are certain profiles clearly ideologically defined?

Thanks for any imput !

Jack

We are a male dom/fem sub couple and are both very liberal. He firmly believes that a woman should be able to be whatever she wants, otherwise her decision to be his doesn't mean as much.

I believe that I have a rather broad exposure to the BDSM community over a wide geographical area, and can reasonably conclude (entirely anecdotally) that lifestylers as a whole are overwhelmingly liberal.

I completely agree with that.

After all, you can't give what you don't have...

Nevertheless, the question remains

I'm conservative.  My Owner is more towards the middle of things, I'd say.  She and I really never have much of a reason to discuss politics, other than vague stuff every so often...like yesterday

PrizedPosession -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 8:27:29 PM)

Master views Himself as a reformist since things aren't getting done and that neither parties are doing much and i am liberal but there are alot of conservatives here too.

juliaoceania -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 8:27:52 PM)

My Daddy is a liberal, I am a socialist  anarchist (which is not even a complete view of my true political beliefs)

subnstudent -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 8:28:23 PM)

Ummm.. I would have to say I'm liberal because I'm not conservative. However, I'm also Generally Uninformed, and I don't care enough for politics to find out.

breatheasone -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 8:29:31 PM)

Master and I are both conservative Republicans.

petdave -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 8:31:42 PM)

With regards to the U.S. "liberal vs. conservative"/"blue vs. red" debate, i think that a lot of D/s folks see the social "conservativism" and/or Christian values of the Republican Party as too important a threat to ignore.

i tend to think that you see more L/libertarians in D/s than in the general population, as well, for an expanded version of the reasons above.

kittengirl8 -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 8:38:04 PM)

I see about the same variety as everywhere else. From conservative (not California conservative either - we all know it's different from Bible Belt conservative) to far left liberal.

I'm somewhere in between, and consider myself a moderate and a libertarian.

This topic fascinates me though. I wonder if the spread is significantly different from what I've observed?

Well if you read postings in here for long enough you find out who is who in the political side of things... and by how much.

We have lots of folks in the middle, quite a few to the Left, a few conservitives and some who beat off to Ann Coulter broadcasts.

Simply put, it takes all kinds.

Personaly I am a liberal democrat. ~ but I dont vote just my party lines.. I vote for who gets the job done.

Thanks for those great inputs...

However, I'm seeing several posts implying that there's no real link between the lifestyle and political convictions. Difficult for me to believe...

Call me naive, but political convictions reflect deeper human values.

So I ask: how can our personal values NOT be linked to such a deep life choice as D/s?

I'm ready to believe that different outlooks on D/s (and there are so many, from what I read here!) can lead to different takes on life.

I'm just curious to know whether there's a trend here.

Jack
PS: Sorry, I'm new... but how come I've got a vanilla Ice cream near my name??? I also want the handcuffs !!

PrizedPosession -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 9:14:27 PM)

Just post more and the ice cream will transform.
And it is all BDSM, we just all live it different. Just like our politics

AquaticSub -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 9:16:49 PM)

I'd say believe it. This is just like any other group of people and there will be variety. There may be a leaning one way or another but there is variety.

GreedyTop -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 9:40:24 PM)

I am registered as a dem, but I find myself leaning more to the conservative side of things, while still falling on the dem side of the fence.  Not quite middle of the road..

ugh..

that makes no sense, does it?

*edited to add*  I'm with Gwyn (get outta my head, dammit!).. I vote for who gets gets things done (or at least who I BELIEVE will do the job..LOL)

*edited AGAIN to add*
One thing that never fails to PISS ME OFF NO END is the people who bitch piss and moan about the state of our Government... and DON'T VOTE! Hell, most of them arent even registered! If you're sick of how things are being done .... get off your lazy, crybaby ass and VOTE!!!!!!!!!!!  If you don't vote, you aint got no business WHINING about it!

hisannabelle -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 9:52:50 PM)

greetings jackriddle,

i too love discussing religion. i'm not so fond of politics, but that's just because i don't really enjoy it in general - i'm not afraid to talk about it! ;)

my master is a fairly conservative republican (registered). i am a socialist registered as an independent. my previous dominant (we're still friends) is a libertarian registered as a republican. we're kind of all over the board :)

i agree that political decisions are usually linked to our own personal values (of course, one should follow the other), but i don't think that being dominant or submissive (or into s&m) really dictates personal values. we have people of all religious walks of life on this board (or none at all) and in bdsm in general...i think it's the same with politics. i haven't seen any one particular party as a whole be hostile towards bdsm (although i think certain candidates themselves make all sorts of oppressive decisions with regards to views different than their own...it's the nature of the beast).

respectfully,
annabelle.

CelticHeart -> RE: Political orientation of D/s practitioners ? (1/31/2008 10:13:06 PM)

It never ceases to amaze me that people who are choosing to live an alternative lifestyle would vote for a member of a political party that would stop them from living the way they want to, if they found out about it. It makes no sense, whatsoever.
