survived my parents' house fire 18 yrs ago.  grabbed the little ones and got the hell out, anything else can be replaced.  pets will escape if they can, if not the grief eventually fades, but the sound of listening to my dad scream for my mother because he didn't know if she'd gotten out was unbearable.  i still have nightmares.  the smell of something burning makes me panic, literally.  my advice, save lives and stay out, everything else can be replaced.

I think you need a remote storage location for your photographic records of your valuables.   Just send the photo's to me and I will donate a portion of my hard drive to serve as your remote suppository  ..errr....repository.

Greedytop, I wholly understand that, I have things that mean a great deal to me, but would not risk anyone's safety, including my own, getting them. If there wasn't any danger to me or anyone else, naturally I'd grab as many things as I could but my priority would be to take care of the essentials first - ourselves and anyone else near the property, ie neighbours. Having said that, I'd be lost without all the toys/clothes we've spent the last two years getting and would likely be a mass of tears and snot at the thought of my handcrafted authentic birching horse that was adding to the kindling!

All living creatures go out with me, (except the fish, they will be S.O.L.......sorry fishies but I cannot carry that tank).

The important stuff (papers and heavy duty bling) is in the safe that is suposed to be fireproof or safety deposit box. I would try to grab the regular photos (digital are also stored on an external harddrive that is kept elsewhere) but not if my life was threatened doing so.

I work at a hotel.  We currently have a family staying with us whose house burned.  Not to the ground, but right now it is uninhabitable due to smoke and water damage.  Everyone in the family (including the cat) got out safely, and they were able to rescue family photos and such.

If you were to be faced with a fire (or flood or other catastrophe), what would you most want to rescue, if you were able to?

First things would be the Cats.. they take precedence over ANYTHING.  Then would be family photos. Next would be some original artwork I own (a water color of Edinburgh Castle, done by a family friend; a lithograph - #28 out of 50 - done by the artist Olivia, of Bettie Page, signed by both; and 3 originals by a very talented local artist (including one he did of me) named Elio Lopez).
There are bunches of other things I'd try to save, but those have the top billing..

I don't have much, thanks to a past relationship, but I would rescue my cameras, Laptop and silversmithing tools, all these things were hard come by and though they just be things, they are all tools I can use to build again, oh and all my photos which I have on archive quality CD-R s, discs which include some of the photos of the family I left and my family.

Photos are memories, snaps in time, things to remember feelings passed.

I have all of my family photos and family memorabilia in storage. What would I grab? The UM, my great grandma's book of handwritten recipes, my purse, and my sewing machine...I can make some good money with that and it would help occupy my mind over what's been left behind...

My dogs, and then in the same swoop I'd grab the stuffed dinosaur I have and the puppy dog daddy won at the fair before he met me, and got for me. Spike's a one of a kind he was hand sewn many years ago for a friend an the friend gave him to me, so while you could run out and grab another toy you could never grab one like him .

I was talking to a friend who said that so many people are materialistic.. they identify themselves by what they HAVE not who they ARE.
That combined with the situation above are what got me thinking.. what is irreplacable?what isnt?  The cats are NOT. everything else is.

Fluffy... are you a student or teacher? If ya dont mind my asking... LOL

Family and pets are a given and deffinetly comes first.

If only to save one item or posession, I'd save my Trench Coat for the case that I was only in my boxers or less.

If decently clothed, I'm thinking jewlry or gifts that we'd bought for one another. Perhaps a box of our kink toys as those items are not filed under our insurance.

However, making it out with wallets, purses, ID's to have on us would be a blessing. Of all the things to replace, ID is the real bitch to get back.

Hmm... Haven't really thought about it, but the only thing that pops immeadiately into my head is BunBun (my stuffed rabbit almost as old as I am).

Of course, I still live "at home" with my mom, so I don't have a lot of important documents or anything... And have an extra key in my car, since I lose mine so often. >.<

I lost alot in a fire.  What I miss the most is my collection of recipes.   Now I scan my recipes and store them on a family website.  I would not wish my experience on anyone.  At least no one was hurt.  Ironic that it happened on Thanksgiving.  Then Katrina hit and my problems seemed so minor in comparison.  My best advice is to have insurance because I didn't and it makes a huge difference.

my new kitten, important papers, irreplaceable pictures...

Do keep in mind that you have something packed and ready in case there IS a fire. I had to leave when the Fires hit out here. It didn't get my house thank god but i was told to evac. I left only cos the smoke got to be too much for my asthma.

my diet pepsi...cause among all that fire i will be fucking sweating and need drink.
ok. soda out the nose HURTS!

Once upon a time, I got my ex-wife laughing right at the point of my orgasm. Somehow she had cum come out of her nose. We couldn't stop laughing. That was a real Kodak moment.

Moving right along, I have my important papers (deeds, passport, birth certificate, etc. in a fireproof/resistant briefcasetype thing) so I'd leave it. I'd snag my computer, meds, irreplaceable family papers (110 year old postcards, letters, etc. from Berlin & Vienna)(need to get a fireproof thingie for them, too), get the Benz out of the garage. Then, if I had time, guitar & amp, drums, DVDs, old stamps (in an album), top drawer of my file cabinet (these are all in my den, right off the garage; tile floor). And if I REALLY had time,  the textiles/rug in the den (natural dye hand-spun wall from Oaxaca), artworks on the wall, some of my nicer books, & if I could make it to the kitchen (up steps from the den) my cookbooks.

Yanno, I guess time is the crucial factor. I often sleep on the couch in my den, and have smoke detectors in the house, so that might give me a head start, maybe. Damn good question, one I need to think about some more TY!

Since I don't have family or pets with me;

If they aren't on me:
Wallet
Cell phone
Car keys
(This way I can call the fire department, order a pizza, and take myself to a hotel)
Then;

Important document file folder
Computer
Sentimental/irreplaceable items (ex: my custom belt given to me by the dojo's proprietress)
Suits, ties, shoes, dress shirts
Something to read by the firelight
