Friends, countrymen, noblemen, thieves, blaggards, tinkers and wenches,

I sense that change is afoot in our country; the artificial entity that is 'Britain' is dead.

With this in mind, where would you like to go? What are your hopes and aspirations for the future of our country? What are the hallmarks of Englishness that you wish to take into the future?

May you be so kind as to leave your daggers and swords at the door prior to entering this thread. Thanks in advance.

Ban the TV soap. ESPECIALLY East Enders, as what a miserable bunch of people who I feel portray the real East Enders to be something to be avoided. Something which I know as not the case with those  who I know who were born within the sound of the Bow bells.

Life's problems, the ills of society, I wonder if  so called entertainment like this does create or perhaps contribute to the suspicion and ill will in society.

Any positives to take into the future, Aneirin?

You must remember NorthernGent that humanity is always changing. A country, no matter how old and distinguished its history, is only as old as the present generation. Which in turn was influenced by the immediately previous generation. So a relatively small time frame.

There is no new change afoot but a continual process of change that is strictly governed by the survival instinct not an allegiance to Englishness.

England and Englishness as well as American cowboys will soon become ancient history then forgotten. Otherwise live for yourself and your children and forget the rest…nothing else is relatively as important.

I've taken your importance to the country as a given, Dark, but you're not infinite so we're going to have to plan for the post-Dark era.

So, England - hopes for the future?

NG You have done away with tradition. Blair has done away with socialism. Thatcher has allegedly done away with everything else. I would leave but i cant find anywhere else that does decent fish and chips.

Personally i dont the the UK being any better or worse than it has been. We are still, in general, honest tolerent, friendly and law abiding. If the day ever comes when a British Government really imroves education, the NHS and the manufacturing industry, life will be good.

Actually, NG---

I do think your getting out of Iraq augurs that the old girl ain't left for town yet, there is still some island left to do some good in this world.

A holding action, for now. Most hopefully, us.

Me?  I think Britian should petition to join the US as the fifty-first state.  Or several states, as appropriate.

Then again, I'm into globalization.

Not a chance.

Thats how we got hold of the country in the first place; damn but those Welsh are easy to trick with their noble ideas of honour and trust. "Come and feast with us, Welsh friends. But no weapons, OK?"

Cue dozens of Welsh lords hacked and slashed to death, and the English barbarians in charge.

And the rest as they say, is history. Though not much has changed.

Wow.  And I always thought Britian was a stately place.

Now I know I was right; that's exactly what Congress is like.
