It's the 'Bigmouth Submissive Collective'. It's a turn of phrase I coined about absolutely nobody in particular in response to another poster who made something up about a 'Women's auxiliary club'. You can read the story here but it's not very interesting.

I can't be arsed making cutesy links right now  .

Of course, a bloke was able to make such a joke without a bleep. When a chick (moi) did, all hell broke loose. It's fucking pathetic.

Where was that post made?  In this thread?  I'd like to see it, I will admit to not reading every post here.  Were responses to it deleted?  If so, never mind.  I'm curious as to whether it was fr or in response to a specific post.

You'll find that answer in my post to Ronny, above. I bloody well hope this isn't a witch hunt... it sure stinks like one (not referring to you particularly, Katy).

I think it's probably a bit too late for the forum to return to the way it was.  Sometimes things pass, sometimes there has to be a surgical intervention.  Either way, it will find its equilibrium.

I don't.  I want to be able to look back and go - hey that happened back then or this was the way it was and learn from it and move forward all the time into something that is ever fluctuating.  Not be stuck in the same hole with no way for my roots to grow or my branches to stretch out. Hmmm... I feel a new post idea coming on...

fast reply

i read the entire thread (for once...) and my personal impression is that one person's confidence is another person's bitchiness. so it doesn't really matter anyway because someone will like you at some point and someone will hate you. i'm used to being called a bitch. i embrace it in that it's easier than fighting it (yes i'm lazy in that regard). i've also been called cocky, full of sh*t, and numerous other things. i think it's all in where you stand.

I don't really agree that Bitch is either a neutral or positive word. Just ask yourself, would you like others, after you left the room, to be calling you a bitch?

To me being a bitch connotes selfishness as one's core behavior and a disregard for others or other points of view. It may also connote a low road to conflict resolution: hostility, overreaction, unfair fighting, manipulation, hysterics, twisting the facts, and being self serving.

Like all cusswords, the word itself can be turned into a term of endearment or erotic praise --- but when commenting on another's upsetting behavior --- I'm not sure I'd ever agree "that one person's confidence is another person's bitchiness."

(The term on the male side of the equation is "Dick.")

--------

Now its also true that when you confidently or assertively challenge another person, that person might respond with the ad-hominem attacks. But I don't think we need to change the character of what "bitch" and "dick" mean in order to accommodate others who don't fight fairly. If we did this, we'd be letting the bitches and dicks compromise the English language.

I still don't understand why it's a badge of honour to some. Perhaps it's a cultural thing. Do you think American culture, with its 'each woman to her own' philosophy and its emphasis on achieving personal goals, could have contributed to the development of 'the bitch'?

I don't know a single female in person that claims that they want to be known as a bitch. Only in forums and chatrooms have I come across it, personally I think it's weird. I'd rather be known as 'strong' 'bright' 'together' or just about any other word denoting strength of character. For me 'bitch' has nothing to do with strength so count me in as an American woman who doesn't get it.

Meow, but that's a different kettle of fish :-). In French the equivalent to what you're talking about is the word 'salope', which can be used either as an insult or as an erotic compliment ("Une belle salope", though it's not for all circumstances lol).

I'm probably completely off-base about the American thing... I have encountered it here primarily, that's why I thought of it as an explanation. I'm not surprised you feel this way, Camille :-) .

That's an interesting linguistic suggestion; it could be the other way around as well... the more I think about it, the more plausible it seems that 'slapper' led to 'salope'. Interesting... back in a mo' !!!

Looks as though 'salope' is a franco-french word (first written trace dates back to 'only' 1607). They think it originates from the juxtaposition of 'sale' (dirty) and 'huppe' (upupa epos, a kind of bird).

There goes today's pompous post. Hopefully I won't make any more  .

Hmmm... there are two kinds of bitches, according to the article below. Strong ones and weak ones. I realise that according to Kate Figes, I was referring to the weak kind:

quote:

Of course, there is a huge difference between the "strong" bitch I am writing about, the woman who happily flouts conventional female stereotypes, and the "weak" bitch whose persona proceeds from vulnerability and who manipulates others to make herself feel stronger. Teenage girls bitch to bond when they feel vulnerable, and bitching to bully is rife in our schools. This is rarely detected because it can be very subtle, but when women bitch from a position of sheer envy and vulnerability it can have devastating effects. Our culture is full of this kind of weak bitching, and girls have little guidance as to how to move from that ugly, bad-bitch stereotype to being a strong, good bitch who stands up to the world with courage.
