Such confabulations as the expanding universe, dark matter and black holes are not facts, but interpretations, kittinSol. Worse: they are incorrect interpretations produced by incompetents that idly call themselves scientists instead of morons. Hence my first post in this thread.

Wassup is the Dark Matter clouding your vision.

Dark Matter was introduced as concept when it became known that current theories couldn't explain the observed rate of expansion of the Universe.
Rather than accept the possibilty that the idea of a Universal expansion may be incorrect Dark Matter was created.
So much for your little comment...Science observes Religion believes.

quote:

It was all about the cosmic threats to our existence.

Entirely redundant... thermodynamics is adequate... energy moves toward a useless state.

Unless somebody has different physics up their sleeve, entropy wins in the end; that much is certain.

quote:

So why worry? Why worry about anything more than the here and now and enjoying our time as sentient beings?

Indeed, why not...

quote:

Whether we're good or bad, virtuous or evil, high or low, it has no consequence whatever in the greater scheme of things.

Correct...

quote:

We should all do only as much as will profit us and make us happy.

Which comes down to the question of what makes you happy... several schools of though reject the notion that we should all be on heroin drips, and instead posit that there is more to the human experience than mere pleasure... some of us would claim that personal integrity and such things are worthwhile; i.e. that the manner in which you live trumps the manner in which you die.

Some, like me, would even go so far as to say that an act of defiance is worthwhile, or at least satisfying.
The question being whether you're willing to give entropy the finger on your way down, among other things.

Kind of like "Irish Cream" says about flowers on a grave: we put them there to defy death, more than anything else.

Health,
al-Aswad.

Yes, dark matter is a hypothesis. But no, you're not proving to me that it's a wrong one.

First of all "the big tear" is a theroy there is nothing to support it, and aslo the fact that space is supposedly indefinate, which means we will never run out of space.

Second Yes Gamma ray bursts are a real threat but the have plenty to defend us. First of all we are a tiny target, imagine trying to shoot a dust mite with a shotgun. Second your sun's magnetic and gravitational feilds draw gamma radiation into it and away from us. Thrid due to our odd orditational pattern and the fact that we are the third planet closest to the Sun and one of the smallest and fastest traveling the other heavanly bodies of our Solar system act as sheilds. So its very unliky. (I watch a lot of the history and discovery channels, I also watch CoW)

Its far for likely the human race will kill its self long before an outside force does.

The first was the unlikely but catastrophic if it happened, possibility of the Earth being hit by a gamma ray burst. Supposedly, these bursts occur when a large star collapses into a black hole and it all depends which direction the bursts are pointing in as to whether they hit anything. If one hit the Earth - and we are a very small target all in all, we'd be, well, pretty well done; these bursts are very powerful and nothing would save us from one originating even 1000 light years away. But apparently there are three observable gamma ray bursts a day....

Actually, if I recall correctly, the gamma burst was something in conjunction with the sudden expansion or collapse of our sun.

So, all in all we're pretty fucked whatever we do.

Yep, if something that big is gonna happen, we are indeed. Worrying about it only gives us ulcers.

quote:

ORIGINAL: LadyEllen

We can deflect asteroids and comets from our planet.

Who told you this? Even that show said that they have a "theory" on how to deflect the large one that 'might' hit us in 2032, but that 'theory' isn't much more than something sketched on a napkin at this point. In fact, the show said the number of people at NASA working on the problem could staff one shift at a McDonald's. 2032 is only 24 years away and the 'ship' they suggested to 'pull' the asteriod away from us isn't even being designed yet, let alone built.

Now here I agree with you. I watched the show originally because it was mentioned by the host of a radio show here. He stated that he and his girlfriend got really depressed while watching it because of what 'could' happen. I watched the show and then remembered his comments and I was like "Seriously? All the stuff going on in the world right now and you're depressed worrying over a gamma burst or an asteroid?"

If any of the things from that show happen, we'll be gone so quickly we really won't have much time to think about it. An asteroid or comet big enough to kill us will annihilate anything on the same hemisphere as the impact in seconds or less. We won't even have time to go "WTF?," let alone to suffer from it.

Not to mention, they stated the likelihood of any of those happening in our lifetime being so remote that to worry about them would be silly at this point.

I say live and enjoy it. Comet strike chances: minor. Massive car wreck chances: very very good, considering stats. I prefer to focus on now, now millions of years from now.

Here's my......ever so deep.....thoughts on the matter.

It could all be summed up in one quote....."There is no normal life Wyatt, there's just life, ya live it."

Y'all have got to think I am touched in the head with all my Tombstone, Doc Holliday, quotes

That being said, regardless of how long humankind is destined to live on this planet, regardless of wether it is our own fault, fate, one big cosmic OOPS!,or a combination of the two. I really don't care to worry about it overmuch. Like Doc said, there's just life and you live it. Live in the moments and make them as wonderful as you can. Tomorrow will take care of itself when it gets here.

Deep thoughts by LaT.....

Excellently put. I could not have said it better myself. If Mr. Asteroid comes, I'll be on the roof lookin' up with both middle fingers extended saying "bring it, bitch!" (Assuming I can get all three words out before being vaporized.)

Ohhhhhh you got me with the Doc quotes, darlin'. Don't forget what he said to the guy during the gunfight who said "Now I've got you!" (Or words to that effect)

*With arms extended and a smile on his face*
"You're a daisy if ya' do."

I would not go so far to call it a hypothesis, while there are several disturbing notions to resolve, by god it exists, whatever it turns out to be.

We would not allow blind people to say we don't exist simply because they can not see us, even tho they feel us and our passing thru time and space.

If I called you that, I'd be callin' the kettle black, as it were. I don't book mark much beyond the main imdb page, but with the memory I was gifted with, I have a much better database in my head. I'm the geek who is constantly 'correcting' my friends when they 'try' and quote movies.

"No no no, he said it THIS way."

And I am convinced.....no matter what you say...no matter who agrees, no matter what the script says. You will NEVER convince me that Doc says "I'm your huckleberry." It just sounds to MY ears too much like "I'm here, huckleberry." And when you break it down, it makes more sense than the former. The first time he says it, Ringo is asking if no one had the guts to play for blood. To which one might more likely reply "I'm here." As opposed to "I'm your." (Assuming you take out the huckleberry part.) From the first time I heard it, to the most recent time just a week or so ago. It ALWAYS sounds more like "I'm here, huckleberry." Your might have been in the script, but I swear to anything Val ad-libbed that part. If I ever get the chance, rest assured, I will ask him.

We're hardwired to see patterns in chaos and intent in just about anything that happens which is why many people believe in god. I suggest everyone just puts on their rose tinted spectacles and go down to the pub and see if they can pull.
