While I am not new to BDSM, I have not been exposed to some different areas and I need to know what Shibari is and what all it covers.
Could someone explain it too me?
Need to know what all it covers...thanks.

Shibari is by no means easy to define. Personally, I am of the opinion that Shibari is Japanese Style bondage as practiced in Japan. And in Japan, it's mostly performance art using very specific techniques that rely on the use of high friction ropes. Most of what we see in the western world is either western style rope bondage, or reversed engineered Japanese style bondage.

i found this to be very interesting and helpfull. Most dungeons will have demos on Shibari once in a while, or You could always go to Japan and learn from a Shibari Master.

In Japanese shibari is actually a verb that means "to tie" or "to bind". The term Kinbaku means "bondage" and Kinbaku-bi translates to "beautiful bondage."

Shibari (noun) as commonly used in the US is perfectly described by Ron in his earlier post...."the art of packaging humans with rope".

The translations from Japanese to English are not a perfect representation of what the words illustrate.

There are many different versions of shibari such as hojoutsu ..

Kinbaku (Japanese Rope Art) / Shibari (Japanese Rope Bondage)

you have net bondage= Karatas. Breast bondage which = shinju. Sukaranbo=Chassity bondage.

Shibaricon ( A Shibari Convention) is going to be held here in Chicago in May. They offer 4 days of classes. You're not that far away, are you? It would be a fun weekend trip, and the majority of people tend to be really good looking. That's always a plus in my book.

If you do make it to ShibariCon, be sure and check out Mark Yu's class. He is incredibly talented and teaches from a completely different perspective than anyone else I have seen.

My understanding of Shibari, when practiced outside of Japan, is that it follows a specific system of knots and ties mastered there, and using hemp rope. At best, most of what we see in the US is probably more like 'shibari-style' rope bondage - beautiful and functional as it may be.

thats when it all becomes a matter of semantics doesn't it.
if a person learned Shibari in japan but is over in the states doing a Demo(which i have luckily seen a few times) is it not considered Shibari, just becuase its not done in Japan?
what about if that person who is a trained Shibari master Trains someone else here in the states... does that person then not get qualified in Shibari. or just Shibari Style?

to the OP: also in some common practice if someone says "would you like me to do some Shibari On you" they are quite often refering to doing the asthetics Non binding or minimally binding rope work (i've heard it called Rope oragami as well) where the person is not restricted in anyway they just have some rope decoration, or a rope bra or something for a dom to grab onto.

Even many people who learned shibari in Japan, for good reasons adapt what they've learned there to some extent. Many techniques are developped for 45kg, 20yo japanese girls and not for 80kg, 45yo caucasian women.
That doesn't detract from the bondage fun at all, but it's not exactly shibari either.

I relate it to martial arts... how much style can you put to a Karate Chop before it becomes a tae-kwon-do open hand strike, or a Sumo push, ect ect.

I also agree here I only mention it because as much as many of us hate to admit it we live in a society were common definition sometimes trumps True Definition. so while i'm not suggesting to adjust your definitions it helps to be aware of what other people are using as theres.

Again, many shibari techniques relate to each other. Once you adjust one thing, you usually must adjust other things as well, I'm sure you can adjust a thing or two and still work in the spirit of shibari, but imo it quite soon becomes "Japanese style bondage". Nothing wrong with that, our website is full with it. But it doesn't help to use incorrect labels.

Yes I'm aware many people have a wrong idea of what shibari is.
