CuriousLord -> Stress or depression = physical weakness? (2/18/2008 7:40:24 PM)

Can depression and stress cause serious physical and mental fatigue?  How does it feel to be depressed or stressed?

Is it possible to be depressed and/or under panic attacks without consciously feeling it?

As a side question, are there any other conditions (physical or otherwise) that can cause heavy fatigue in an otherwise syptom-free person?

Yep... look up 'Epstein Barr'. Both stress and depression can affect the immune system, opening the door for other problems.

Yes

Yes, tiredness, fatigue, these are symptoms of depression for many people.
I don't think it's possible to have a panic attack without knowing it.  I think sometimes it is confused for other things.  A coworker had difficulty swallowing, after undergoing tests, her doctors determined that she was having panic attacks.

Depression is frequently somatised - the list of ailments is far too long, but it comprises general aches and pains, insomnia, digestive problems... extreme tiredeness is a common complaint in depressed patients.

It's possible to be depressed and stressed and to not be aware of it at first, absolutely.

Physical problems that can trigger heavy fatigue are for example a slow thyroid or a defficiency in vitamins (very frequent), high blood sugar...

Best thing: to see a quack. It's their work to sort the symptoms out and to give the patient the diagnostic.

chronic fatigue syndrome sufferers normally also exhibit some forms of chronic pain, but i'd recommend checking that out. b-12 and other vitamin deficiencies can cause cognitive issues, physical weakness, and fatigue as well.

but yes, stress and depression can both cause a wide variety of physical issues. for me, both exacerbate the pain problems i already have and make me extremely fatigued. as alumbrado mentioned, they also impair the immune system and generally put a lot of stress on the body, physically. you're much more likely to become injured or experience pain when you are tense due to stress.

also, it is very possible to experience physical symptoms of stress, depression, and anxiety, and not consciously realize that's what's going on. normally if you're having a panic -attack-, you know it, but generalized anxiety, depression, and stress can and often do occur without conscious realization that that is what's happening.

Curious, if you deprive your body of sleep long enough, yes that can have serious consequences on your immune system.  Fatigue is not a symptom, it is the problem.

Lock your door, turn off all electronic devices and sleep.  Then do it again because fatigue does become cumulative.  You can give your body what it needs when it asks nicely, or you can wait until your brain starts malfunctioning.

You can have panic attacks without knowing they are panic attacks. For me, mine are racing heart, racing thoughts and lack of appetite. Depression and stress can have the same symptoms of a cold, minus the cough and such... fever (I had one, very minor but present), exhaustion, sleeplessness, muscle pains, headaches, lack of appetite, nausea, lack of sexual interest...
And it feels different for every person. I never knw I was depressed when I was, I just knew what the symptoms were versus the symptoms of the Manic swings when they happened.

Awesome.  Thanks all for the info.

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Stress or depression = physical weakness? (2/18/2008 8:10:36 PM)

of course it can...specially if you have a heart condition and with that are already fatigued...so stress for me =  very brutal....death like.  depression just adds more to it.  mind you im lonely as fuck...but depressed? inconclusive..as im just upset at certain things.

absolutely. Just because you are depressed doesn't mean you will feel sad all of the time. Stress can add to the feeling of depression.

Each person experiences depression differently than the next. The best thing to do is to seek out medical help.

One thing that really helps depression and stress is a good brisk walk for 45 minutes or an hour a day.
It gets your circulation going, gives you an oxygen flush and is good for your heart of course.
Try doing that everyday for a week and you'll feel 100% better!

What seems to work best for me, my natural remedy for stress or especially depression is simply ensuring that I socialize a little bit every day.

The more the better, too. It literally works wonders.

it should be noted that depression can lead to cutting, anorexia/belemia (spell?), and many other ways to hurt self physically...as well as suicide.

Rayne58 -> RE: Stress or depression = physical weakness? (2/18/2008 8:53:42 PM)

*fast reply*
I was under such stress during my first marriage that I got a stomach ulcer.  I was unaware of the stress because I'd been living with it for so long (read emotional abuse) that it felt normal [&o]  I've had other stressful situations since that interfered with my menstrual cycle (skipped three periods when my father was ill, I lost my job and had to move, plus deal with a relationship breakup all in a very short period of time).

Now I am under stress with worry about Sir's health.  I find I am tired a lot, have headaches and am not sleeping as well as I should.  I can get to sleep but wake after 3-4 hours and cannot get back....my mind starts racing and I just keep worrying).  The gym is helping - I go and work out and focus on myself rather than my worries.  I also like to lose myself in a thick book or watch a movie or listen to music.  Sir's cuddles help the best though [:D]

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Stress or depression = physical weakness? (2/18/2008 8:56:44 PM)

yes im the same way..3-4 hours to fall asleep..then wake up every 30-60 mins..takeanother 30 mins to fall back asleep...and do it all over again...

i generally get 4-5 hours tops of sleep...during a 10-12 hour period.  its a side issue of my heart condition.  i can take meds for it...but they're so very expensive..about $1.50 per pill.  (expensive for me since all my other meds are covered but this isnt) if your wondering..they were imovane i think..7.5 mg sleep meds...dangerous with my heart...if excessive.

And sometimes that is the worst thing you can do.  Sleep.  Eat decent food instead of vending machine garbage.  Exercise (a quick paced game of basketball is good).

Oh, yeah.  One last thing that will do wonders for depression.  Laugh, long and hard.
