I'm surprised no one made a point of mentioning it, but since it wasn't noted...

While 'dominant' is the noun and 'dominate' the action, some people may see the act as more significant than the self - "I am what I do...I am a Dominate because I Dominate".

Mind you, confusion of the noun and verb is probably more likely. This gives another possible venue, though.

Lie means to recline while lay means to put or place.

You would not say "I am laying on the floor in front of the television," anymore than you would say "I am putting or placing on the floor in front of the television." You are 'reclining' so, "I am lying on the floor in front of the television" is the correct usage.

A simple way to remember the rules of lie and lay is to substitute the word of which you are unsure and use 'recline' in it's place. If recline works, then lie and it's various tenses are correct.

Sorry, I could not help myself. This is one of my pet peeves. As to what others have said I think that we all can be lazy at times with our writing especially on a message board. I, however, am one of those people who find things like dominate in place of Dominant highly irksome. In fact, I just had to correct myself three times as I couldn't type dominate used as a noun. I kept typing dominant.

So what about context?

'Lie' is not just a verb about spreading falsehood or untruths, but it is also a static verb like stand, sit, appear, etc.

'Lie' and 'lay' are synonyms. Just like 'while' and 'whilst'. Just like 'lie' and 'deceive'. 'Lie' has more than one meaning.

This is why context is so important, because English is a language where words can have more than one meaning. 'Get' for example has eighteen different meanings, 'set' as many as fifty eight different meanings, and so on.

This makes English possibly the easiest second language to learn in a way, because you don't have to speak it correctly to be understood, 'I go shop' is just as clear as 'I am going to the shop'. But it is also the hardest because many words can have different meanings and because English is used as a native language by many different people throughout the world, connotations of a word may vary and the context may differ. Compare the different ways in which an American uses the word 'sure' from how a Brit uses it. Think of the many different connotations of the word 'fuck' for example.

Not all languages are like this. Polish for example has one word one meaning. This is why Polish has 96 different verbs which mean 'to shit', more than any other language.

Partly, I think, because in English rules follow usage. We appreciate this when we are not lodged uncomfortably up on our high horses.

As it happens, and the nounification of "submissive" has been going on for two or three days longer than the nounification of dominate. Submissive, used as a noun, is no longer a clear cut case of an error.

Given the prevalence of the "error" it is even now being reclassified as acceptable usage by lexicographers as well as by those posting to this thread. I wonder how long it will take for this to happen to the noun "dominate".

I think the noun "dominate" is ugly. I don't see that it arises from anything particularly good or worthwhile. I would like to see less and less of it.

I think the noun "dominate" has a good deal in common with this thread.

Four points extra credit:

Find the spelling, punctuation, grammar and vocabulary errors in this post.

Or call in the glazier for some remedial work on your house.

I know this was about something else Noah but I just had to have a go for the 4 extra points.

Being pedantic (and I'm either a pedant or a pederast - never could work out the difference) the highlighted sentence isn't actually a sentence in the normal "well constructed sentence" sense. It's a hanging sentence and, in common usage, incorrect grammatically. I therefore claim my points. And as for the new word "nounification", well words fail. Do I get double points?

And as an aside, since you know a glazier, could you give me his number? I've been throwing these stones too you see and what with my house being a glasshouse .............
