OK I pose this poll to open eyes of the public.
My own opinion is to allow everyone minus the convicted felons to carry as you will.

My reason: If we all carried a gun then more and more people would be polite, considerate and patient. Because if you decided to say or do something that another person finds obtuse or disrespectful then, they may just shoot you. If you are driving and cut someone off, they may shoot you.

Better: You are at a bank and it is being held up by 1-3 people. You could shoot them and be considered a hero for saving money of the bank.

Please tell me why you think the way you do.

They all carry guns in Iraq go live there and tell me what it's like.

I have this thing about guns. The person who wants to take them from me is the first person I am shooting with it.

Those bureaucrats are deadly with their pens and paper, fucking bureaucrats only wanting sane people carrying guns. Don't they understand the fundamental right to bare arms to force people to be polite to one another?

christine1 -> RE: GUNS should we be allowed to carry (2/23/2008 8:28:46 AM)

another thought and to no one in particular...some people can barely control themselves with a keyboard in front of them, what would happen if they had a gun?  i'm just sayin...

edited to add:  i am pro-gun, but i don't think everyone is cut out for owning one.

Raechard -> RE: GUNS should we be allowed to carry (2/23/2008 8:48:21 AM)

Actually this topic is quite funny because the other week I was walking past a so called road rage incident where two supposed adults were arguing with one another because one person pulled out of a parking space in front of the other. Now if one or both of them had guns one or both of them would be dead. It’s nice people exclude criminals from having guns but you have to remember the most dangerous criminals are the ones that have never been caught, also people do stupid things in moments of weakness. The sad fact is I don’t trust humans to carry around with them the power to kill. I don’t even trust the police to do that:

You will never deter criminals from acquiring guns,,they will find a way to attain them, just down the road from me an elderly couple was waken one night with an intruder in their house..now pops grab his 9 and ran then off, what would have happen to them if there wasn't a weapon in the house..I am retire military and have either own guns or been around then since a wee lad..I personal own many and she and I have a concealed weapon permits..Here on the farm we either have one strapped on or in the saddle scabbard even when we are riding...The coyotes and bear are bad around here not to mention a traveling mountain lion every once in a while...Common sense is in play here folks just like in every thing else..One should have the basic training before a permit or sales should happen..I attend many swaps meets and guns sales there are out of sight..this is where we need some control..what say all of you...bounty

How does the topic relate to freedom of speech please explain? Are you saying that you only have freedom of speech if you live where everyone has guns?

What was being said was that someone defend your right to voice your opinion by carring that weapon and a whole lot of people have died to let you do it including a big bunch of Marines I served with because they believed in that right

Bad guys will have guns, regardless of the law
Bad guys will carry guns, regardless of the law - but likely only on need as they dont want to risk arrest unnecessarily
If everyone may carry guns then the bad guys will not be deterred from carrying only on need
A good proportion of the population are ignorant, ill mannered and incapable of thinking straight; giving them a gun is not a good idea as if they dont shoot themselves, theyre liable to shoot someone else accidentally or for no adequate reason
Having a gun and being trained to use it is not the same as being capable of using it properly in stress conditions, such as those proposed as the reason for carrying. This isnt Sony Playstation, its real life, where people shoot back.
Many, perhaps most people, are unwilling to shoot another human being, even if they are capable of using a gun properly in stress conditions. Again, this isnt Sony Playstation, its real life with real consequences.

If there is to be widespread, uncontrolled carrying of weapons then it would be far better to limit guns to those who are capable of using them properly for the desired end of self defence, which may necessitate the sort of military training intended to overcome the inherent human trait not to kill. Which perhaps in itself is not a good thing.

Better would be to permit people to carry swords generally - its then obvious as to who is armed. What is not clear is the proficiency and fitness of the carrier, and it would be safest to assume everyone is highly skilled and very fit, rather than get into a fight. Nevertheless, most will want to attain proficiency and fitness, just in case - provoking a whole new industry to train people, fighting obesity and getting the nation fit.

And the bad guys? Well, there would be plenty of good guys with guns who are capable and ready to shoot to kill to counter them, and the people with the swords are not exactly outgunned by one person with a handgun, with which it is easy to miss and which has a limited number of rounds. Swords dont run out of ammunition.

I was thinking this thread was asking if people carrying guns in modern day society made that society safer. I fail to see how this is linked in any way with freedom of speech won in battles past. Are you suggesting your rights to carry weapons is so you can keep the government in check and stop it from becoming some kind of dictatorship that treads on free speech? I'm just trying to figure out where freedom of speech comes into this because guns were used to gain free speech in the past people can carry them for personal safety reasons now? It's a strange kind of logic and a bit like saying people have the right to drive tanks for personal safety because they were used in WWII also.

I'm aware my rights were hard fought for in the past and I'm grateful to those that have made sacrifices for me but this has nothing to do with this topic as far as I’m concerned.

Snake -> RE: GUNS should we be allowed to carry (2/23/2008 2:37:00 PM)

Any of the rights that we hold dear and that founded this county must be linked, to take any would only open the flood gates to those who would impose their view of "what you do and think" and this place on the web under those conditions would not be allowed

Raechard -> RE: GUNS should we be allowed to carry (2/23/2008 3:08:34 PM)

No progress can ever be made then. I'm sure that people had the right to drink and drive at one point but not anymore.

My right to be an ass has little to do with what has been militarily accomplished over the last 27 years. Though I am a glad that others have joined the military and that their very presence does afford the citizens of this country a blanket of protection....I would not go as far as saying that through their loss of life, limbs and eyes and that by paying the ultimate sacrifice has necessarily produced an outcome worthy of the cost. I would not be willing to spill a precious drop of Domiguy blood over many altercations that have led to the proud men and women of our armed services losing their lives or becoming seriously wounded. I don't trust our government to be able to decide the value of my life. If I can't trust the government to make such a decision how can I afford to trust the average citizen?

I think everyone who wants a gun should own one. The premise proposed by the op that people might act in a more polite fashion because of all of the people "carrying" shows exactly why the op as well as many others should probably not be allowed to carry a weapon....You mean to say because I argue with someone at a bar or cut someone off on the road that I might get shot? Since when has poor behavior been a death sentence? There are to many fucked up people that would find it justifiable to brandish a weapon simply because they are upset or feel that they were wronged. If everyone was capable of utilizing common sense I could give a squirt if you want to walk around with a bazooka....It appears that day is a long way off.

Lumus -> RE: GUNS should we be allowed to carry (2/23/2008 4:00:57 PM)

I wouldn't chalk my answer up to my culture, but I am Canadian, and we don't carry guns [the reason why I am responding without voting].

I have had weapons pointed at and used upon me.  I still defended myself, but would not do so with a gun.  I have a tongue and a mind, and find them sufficient for most things; and the threat of death does not change who I am.  If a person needs a weapon to enforce their feelings, it's a sorry state of affairs.  Weapons are not defensive, they are a counter-offense occasionally employed in the act of self-defense.

There's any number of scenarios one can spin off of that, I suppose, but not many of them apply to me.  Would I do something against my nature under threat of death?  Not necessarily, though if it's a matter of pride versus practicality I'm not about to die in smugness.

ferriemistie -> RE: GUNS should we be allowed to carry (2/24/2008 3:02:05 AM)

well in my opinion anyone that wants to purchase/carry a gun should have to take the same classes i had to take for my job (armed security officer) well minus the core intry and arrest athourity. We had to take a 24hr class on guns, cleaning, using, the different parts, and then the most important part when it is legal to use a gun.. (even when it falls under self defense) then we had to go out on the range and qualify.. (did you know that if a police officer is talking to you and puts his hand on his belt near his gun it's considered brandishing... 18.2-282) But anyways back to my point if you want a gun you should have to work for it.. take the classes, pass the test, then qualify...
