A sponger = someone who literally 'sponges' off the system, or other people. Someone who 'soaks up' from others. A freeloader.

What's a hoser?

Prince Harry, and the Royal family by extension, are often referred to as 'spongers' because they cost quite a lot of money to the British taxpayers  . They're an expensive relic. A luxury.

In 2006 they were quoted as costing £37 million. Take off the cost they bring in through tourism and its not that much in the scheme of things. Just compare it with the billions being wasted on the 2012 drug cheats games

Just reported on Channel 4 - Prince Harry has been in Afghanistan with the army for months, and there has been a media agreement to not report on it. This following from assurances that because of his high value as a potential hostage to those we're fighting, that he would not be deployed with his unit to Afghanistan or Iraq.

Also in a very matter of fact interview from Helmand province, he said "shit" - twice!

What is the country coming to?

E

Harry seems like a good young man, quite likable, as is his brother.

And then who actually does the reporting, it's the Americans! Is that what this mapping you mentioned is about - showing the Taliban exactly where the UK troops are and does that also constitute 'friendly' fire?

Is that b/c he's using a sophisticated system of communication with his comrades, which amounts to yelling out, "Koo" "Koo"?

It sounds like he's following in Prince Andrew's footsteps.

See what I mean, Level, they can't even get their facts right and every country is now claiming that 'exclusive'.

I feel pretty sorry for the guy.  He's trying his best to serve like any other officer (not that he can totally make that happen) and this press release totally ensures that staying in theatre will put his fellow soldiers at greater risk.

The press is a double edged sword in peace time.  In times of war, they are a double edge sword that is twice as sharp.

Good morning, Morrigan  What I found surprising is that the Aussie story came out way back in January

This is why I can't get worked up about it and I can take or leave the royals. I'm sure they make a net gain for the country and even though I think we shouldn't be in Afghanistan, he has got the bottle to go which is more than Bush had when he was dodging Vietnam. As for the cost of the royals, for a country that is willing to waste billions so drug cheats (most already doing OK) can make more money, I think they are a low priority.

i think harry should be commended for taking the risk and actually serving during a time of conflict.  when was the last time any member of the royal family actually saw active duty of this nature?  i think his mother would have been proud; worried sick but very proud.

Britain's Ministry of Defense says Prince Harry is being withdrawn from Afghanistan.

Chief of the Defense Staff Air Chief Marshal Jock Stirrup confirmed Friday that the army is pulling Harry out of Afghanistan after news of his deployment there was leaked.

Harry, third in line to the British throne, has been serving on the front line with an army unit in Helmand, one of Afghanistan's most lawless and barren provinces since mid-December.

Prince Andrew, Harry's uncle saw active duty in the Falklands in 1980 as a helicopter pilot.

Good Moaning, Level (Said in best Allo Allo accent), so basically, while it's been reported that Harry's tapped the ass of 30 Talibans, we really cannot corroborate this and we have zero clue where he is, if he actually is in that country?

I'll wipe the scrambled eggs from my face now

Respectfully......I am confused by your response.

I am certain that he was angry, but are you being supportive of him and his anger or are you being less than supportive.

I am not trying to be cutting or attacking, just asking for clarification.

ITV1 watchers: who's to bet The Palace will get recommissioned now?

Well, they wouldn't let his dad go to the Falklands and the older brother - who probably envies him - won't be allowed either.  Must be a strange dynamic during breakfast at Highgrove.  I know Ginger went there because he wants to be a military man.

But what are we doing there?

As it stands, Channel 4 should know better than to give these spongers any exposure.

So your problem with him is that he happened to be born to a father who is the future king? No matter what he does he's a piece of shit because of who his father is?

He joined the army during a time of war, expecting to go to the front lines with his unit. He didnt have to join - OK there's a tradition in the family, but he didnt have to join precisely because of his wealth and position (which seems to be your sole reason for dislike). I note that none of the Labour government who made the decisions to go to war have kids any closer to the front lines than a bar in Islington.

If this were any other junior officer out there, presumably you'd express support for him or her, even if you disagree with the premise of conflict?

As for him being there, I think its granting potential for a very unwise hostage situation all in all, and risking his unit being singled out - albeit that with helmet, goggles and scarf its difficult to recognise anyone, its rarely too difficult to find out which regiment is facing you on the battlefield. At the same time though, he wanted to go and his grandmother wanted him to go, and I'm pleased (the above potentials notwithstanding) that position and wealth need be no barrier to risking a neck along with the rest of our troops, whatever the merits or lack thereof in the Labour decision for war.

There's no chance of God going armed with a bazooka and getting stuck in on the battlefield.......he's far more likely to be sat in a jaccuzi somewhere with 12 angels lapping at his bollocks....assuming he has an ounce of sense.....

Anyway, good luck to all concerned, and let's hope that spending some time with his brothers in arms will ensure he returns a republican and proceeds to disestablish the House of Windsor from within.....

For God, King and Country.......Tally Ho!

Good morn, Muttling. I support his being upset, as I respect  him for his desire to serve, in the same capacity as his mates.

Having said that, I do see why the Brits would not want him to be captured, or to have his unit become more of a target, due to his presence.

Edited to add: I started a poll in the Random/Poll forum, on the media, thanks to your "double edged sword" thought.
