LadyE seems to think that if the UK monarchy was allowed to die a natural death then the post Head of State must be political. Why is that?

are you seriously thinking, that those who will make such an appointment, being politicians, will choose anyone worthy from outside their ranks to put their snout into that particular trough?

Why does it follow that politicians should make the choice?
I expect the "Arties" would be first in line
Have a referendum. Thats what I say ! That should at least give Paul Gascoigne a chance.

Not sure that Royals fought in WW1 but the offspring of aristocrats certainly did.

Since Romney's kids are no longer supporting the United States by working on their father's campaign, I have not heard whether they volunteered en masse to fight in the war their father claimed was so necessary.

Anybody hear anything?

Yay, someone who's great great grandad had a bigger stick than my great great grandad did some military service. fortunateley our massive war machine doesent hinge upon the individual (if, if only my boardgames mimicked reality, more points in the squad champion) so good on 'arry for being a man but....does it really matter?

No - a referendum would be taken over by the political parties hellbent on having one of their "worthies" put in place. There are no nationwide organisations, other than political parties (and perhaps the likes of the WI) who have anything like the machine necessary to publicise a candidate widely enough to gain enough votes.

Please try again ideological republicans, and remember "different" is not "better". I'm not bothered at all whether its the house of Windsor/Saxe Coburg thats head of state, but I certainly am not interested in changing things just for the sake of change, and replacing one set of problems with another thereby.

LadyE, are we not supposed to have an apolitical Civil Service ?
If you need practice in learning how to curtsy I will willingly give you lessons he he he he

The French got rid of their monarch in 1780y something. That put the wind up 'em.. Just 'cos it got a bit out of hand later on is no reason not to do the first bit.
Bye bye Lillibet. LadyE needs you but many dont !
