Here we have an example of a "politically correct liberal" (first time anybody calls me that, by the way, I think it's hilarious - should I be flattered, or offended, Rich?) making an attempt at sarcasm, and of an "earnest conservative" lacking the sense of humour and/or self-derision to catch the sarcasm :-) .

Would a rewrite be exclusive to what the “original scriptures” say, or would it take into account that the “stories” told in the Bible, hold strange, yet unmistakable resemblances to stories told by cultures existing long before Christianity? If so, is it done with a modern perspective, or do the writers attempt to see things from the perspective of the first tellers?
 
I wouldn’t say I’m against the idea. I am, however, doubtful the message will be less botched then it has been in the past.

with you Lady H, at least as far as the history of the bible is concerned.

And since he is a biblical scholar who can read many of the original languages
I would tend to believe him.

Scholar Bart Ehrman's book explores how scribes -- through both omission and intention -- changed the Bible.
Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why

is the result of years of reading the texts in their original languages. (emphasis added)

Ehrman says the modern Bible was shaped by mistakes and intentional alterations that were made by early scribes who copied the texts. In the introduction to Misquoting Jesus, Ehrman writes that when he came to understand this process 30 years ago, it shifted his way of thinking about the Bible.

Status: offline 		To rewrite bible? that is crazy idea. Why dont we rewrite Homer, and Shakespeare is getting old too. why should one want to rewrite piece of art. While we are at it, lets repaint Mona Lisa. Maybe recompose 5th. Everything older then Oscar Wilde has to be redone.

What we truly need to rewrite is constitution that paper is outdated. Electoral votes? sure, amazing idea, when most of your country is illiterate, and unable to know what is happening in DC. In 2007, show people some trust please.
