Since there is no common and ACCURATE translation from the original text, I think it might open a few eyes. all the references to 'a god' in the old testament and whatnot. And god's wife. Rom

Why not? The Bible is a charming piece of literature, nice mythology, interesting legends... Nothing wrong with having a thousandth version done for today's readers. It would be interesting if they included the Gospel of Judas... some rumour he was the true messiah, being the one who was truly sacrificed - reputation and all [:D] .

If it was rewritten people would see it as inconsistent with that which they remember it to be. This is why religion is a flawed concept it can't evolve. Does limbo exist? Only in the Caribbean. Is homosexual activity ok? Yes no maybe. Was eve created from spare ribs? No it was a KFC family bucket she eats most. Was the world created in six days? No that was our clever metaphor for evolution.

Non-Serious Answer: Yes. Replace all references to 'Jesus' with 'Lumus'. Serious Answer: There are organizations who commonly update the language and verbiage of the Bible to make it more readable to younger generations. I had comic books based on the Bible when I was a kid [my father was a minister at the time]. I don't currently have a list of these organizations, but I could probably ferret a few out for you, if you like. Now, if you meant redefining the morals of the Bible...bad idea. The morals of the Bible are already debated ad nauseum as they exist; things are interpreted, reinterpreted, and analyzed to death in some instances. Any fundamental changes to the fundamental precepts would be quickly swept under the rug, doubly so if those changes are made in the Old Testament. The best case scenario would be to create some offshoot that defines things their own way, ie if you tried to correlate every event in the Bible with separate historical documentation. "And the peasant walked up to Lumus and said, 'Bitch, I got my fish but where's mah bread...yo?!'"

Shall we also rewrite the Koran, the Sagas, the Bhagavad Gita? And there are a great many translations of the Bible available, even multiple translations in a single volume.

It might be a good idea to erradicate the pesky bits in the Bible which offend contemporary readers [8D]. Time for a cleanup: it won't be the first one. Doesn't mean the older versions have to be burnt - they can be kept in vaults, at the Vatican or wherever they belong.

We'd say: He found him in a desert, and in the wasteland and howling wilderness, he led him, he taught him, and he made him the Apple of his I-pod! Wow, dude. This is fun. E.

First off, I'm an out and proud atheist. To me, the bible is an interesting piece of fiction that has been used to hurt, maim, kill, and oppress people for thousands of years. So I'm a tad jaded. However, in updating the bible, I'd assume we'd update the language and verbiage used, as Lumus pointed out. That in itself is not a good idea. Look at how much words have changed, have moved away from their original meanings. How much original meaning can and will be lost when "updating" the "good" book? Besides the fact, WHO gets to update the bible, and what intentions and motives will they have in updating it? Who watches the watchers?

no, i don't think it should be re written. if someone wants to add their opinion fine... i also dont' think a Stephan King novel should be re written just because someone doesnt' like it or agree with it. just because some people don't agree with a text doesn't mean it has to be changed, get over it...move on to something that you do agree with.
