My latin blessing translation for La Tigresse is; "May Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you your sins, and bring you to everlasting life."

Tomestone: This what you are looking for?
quote:

Doc Holliday: In vino veritas.
["In wine is truth" ]
Johnny Ringo: Age quod agis.
["Do what you do"]
Doc Holliday: Credat Judaeus apella, non ego.
["The Jew Apella may believe it, not I" Here you need to consider 'common' meaning: "I don't believe drinking is what I do best."]
Johnny Ringo: [pats his gun] Eventus stultorum magister.
["Events are the teachers of fools"]
Doc Holliday: [gives a Cheshire cat smile] In pace requiescat.
["Rest in peace" Can also, in context, mean: "It's your funeral!"]
Tombstone Marshal Fred White: Come on boys. We don't want any trouble in here. Not in any language.

Don't give me credit or even my Latin teacher, Sister Claver. I remembered some, especially "In vino veritas". I was asked to translate this during one drunken night of trivia and found the reference at a movie site. I remembered the site not the dialog.

The best is the punchline...

Doc Holliday: Evidently Mr. Ringo's an educated man. Now I really hate him.

Never trust a Pope who was in the Hitler Youth.

kittinSol -> RE: Pope - "New 'sins'; more ways to go to hell!" (3/10/2008 3:31:40 PM)

Finally someone answered my question. Thanks, fargy. It's not reassuring, mind you :-( .

Muttling -> RE: Pope - "New 'sins'; more ways to go to hell!" (3/10/2008 3:44:47 PM)

I think we should all do a road trip to Rome and take turns confessing our sins.

We'll either give the poor guys a heart attack or we will come out with improved suggestions for corporal punishment.

Hold it kitten, before taking that information to the 'bank', you need to put it in context. EVERYONE in Germany was required to be in the Hitler youth.

quote:

Following his fourteenth birthday in 1941, Ratzinger was enrolled in the Hitler Youth — membership being legally required after December 1939 (though 10-20% did disobey the rule) — but was an unenthusiastic member and refused to attend meetings. His father was a bitter enemy of Nazism, believing it conflicted with the Catholic faith. In 1941, one of Ratzinger's cousins, a 14-year-old boy with Down syndrome, was killed by the Nazi regime in its campaign of eugenics In 1943 while still in seminary, he was drafted at age 16 into the German anti-aircraft corps.

The truth is bad enough. Misinformation only gives others legitimate grounds to discount the truth. Being labeled 'Hitler Youth' in 1941 Germany is the equivalent of being born in Sicily and assigned a label - Italian.

"membership being legally required after December 1939 (though 10-20% did disobey the rule) "

So, he didn't have the INTEGRITY to stand up for his beliefs, although 10-20% of the population did....

That says it all, doesn't it.

Yes fargle, it says that at the age of 14, he chose to sign a piece of paper instead of being shot or put in a camp. At 14 - he didn't stand up for his beliefs.

The rest of the 10-20% didn't become Pope but there are also no records of those who didn't join but instead delivered Zyklon B to the camps by the truckload.

Pope Ben should be judged by his adult hypocrisy; there is more than enough of it. Call me a Catholic apologist if you feel it serves. Maybe I'm just a enabling, rationalizing,  'softy'. However, I'm going to give him a pass for the decisions he made at 14.

DS, There is virtually a limitless list of references. For expediency sake I used the Internet version of 'Reader's Digest' - Wikipedia. I gave the source in the quote, but maybe it wasn't obvious. Start there - It will give you plenty of places to dig further.

PPS - Tell you what - send them to beth. she's recovering from surgery and is already on a much clearer path to heaven. Me - My seat awaits on the frigid 9th level, at the table with Brutus, Cassius, Judas and Satan. Maybe I can talk them into a winner take all - no limit Texas Hold 'Em game to rule hell.

Bringing to mind Milton's words on the subject: "It is better to rule in hell than to serve in heaven". Learned from the "Space Seed" episode of the original Star Trek series.

GoddessDustyGold -> RE: Pope - "New 'sins'; more ways to go to hell!" (3/10/2008 5:20:42 PM)

~FR~
Thanks alot, Merc!  Now I have to pray for all for these people who think it is funny to make jokes about going to hell!  [;)]
On a more serious note, I think it is important to remember that all these "sins" (mortal and venial) are mostly man made.  We only need to to look to the Ten Commandments for our basic system of morality and law.  There is nothing in those commandments that address birth control (artifical or natural) as a sin, nor is there anything wrong with being rich or being obliged to equalize yourself with others and give your money to the poor.  Else there would be no reason for "Thou shalt not covet they neighbor's goods".  Coveting something you have not earned and therefore have no right to is the sin.  Not having it or earning it in the first place. Yes, it is also stated that it is easier for a rich man to pass through the eye of a needle than to enter the gates of heaven, but I have always thought that this is more in line with  the attitudes that often blossom with wealth.  Not the wealth itself.
I only had 12 years of Catholic Education, so Merc has Me beat by 4 years.  I question things all the time.  But I never throw away My basic faith because some humanly flawed system says I have to believe they way they say I have to believe. Too bad for them that both the parochial education system as well as My parents taught Me to think for Myself.
I believe in Heaven and Hell.  I also believe that God has a sense of humor.  But the most important belief, at this point, is that that sense of humor is being strained to the limit.
Seriously, it's one thing to not believe at all.  Perhaps someday you will find something.  Perhaps not.  But for those who claim to believe but think it is funny to make jokes about preferring to go to hell rather than thinking for themselves and realizing that <insert natural and harmless human pleasure here> is not going to get you a one way ticket to the flames, then I truly rue the day you find yourself in those flames because you assumed you would never end up there.
Signed,
Another basically lapsed Catholic, but still quietly and consistently Christian to the core.

By that logic, I'm a devout Catholic. I better dust off my old Baltimore Catechism

Hang on - I think I remember the 'holy words'....

"B-14! Under the Letter 'B' Number 14...
O-69 Under the Letter 'O' Number 69...
G-47 Under the Letter 'G' Number 47...
I-19 Under the Letter 'I' Number 19..."
BINGO!
"Please hold your cards until the winner's numbers are verified."

The 'skill' involved was to pause long enough for the old ladies to be check all their cards, but not too long as to let their senility take effect.

How so? Is it politically incorrect to hate the fucking Nazis now?
