SeeksOnlyOne -> RE: Racist (3/16/2008 2:33:41 PM)

i have to agree with you about the black colleges and such.  a good step towards getting folks to stop talking race would be to get rid of such things as the naacp, the miss black america, and any other things that are (or are implied) to be for one "race" only.

i find that racial pride is much more common in the black community, and i find it to be a good thing.  taking pride in family and heritage is a good thing.  but i have to be free to do the same thing without it being labeled a way to hold another down.

races are categories, heritages, history.  and all should be preserved.  it is possible to be proud of your own, and not want to hold another down.

how that will ever be done, well, no easy answers there.  sometimes it seems the ones who scream against racism the loudest are the ones that wish to keep it alive longer.

just the way i see it......i just keep trying to do my best to "live and let live".

Aynne -> RE: Racist (3/16/2008 6:06:10 PM)

I absolutely agree.  What a ridiculous concept.  I love the song/quote as well. I may have to post that to our local paper's online racismn debate, with permission of course!

You`ve Got To Be Carefully Taught

You've got to be taught
To hate and fear,
You've got to be taught
From year to year,
It's got to be drummed
In your dear little ear
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught to be afraid
Of people whose eyes are oddly made,
And people whose skin is a diff'rent shade,
You've got to be carefully taught.

You've got to be taught before it's too late,
Before you are six or seven or eight,
To hate all the people your relatives hate,
You've got to be carefully taught!

General question.

An earlier poster made the asinine contention that it was the existence of black-centered collages,institutions and groups like the NAACP,etc. that are responsible for racism.

Question...

What came 1st,the racism and discrimination that spawned outfits like  Morehouse College,the NAACP and SPLC,or was it those institutions(and one`s like them) that started prejudice/fear and hate in our culture?

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Racist (3/16/2008 6:16:10 PM)

Insults in a debate? What is said about that now? Didn't go over my head at all, I read it and understood it well. There was no standard there.

You avoid things well, don't ya?

OrionTheWolf -> RE: Racist (3/16/2008 6:23:36 PM)

You are a liar. There is no way to not understand my points. I have never said "do nothing". I have said that discrimination leads to discrimination, so using it will not eliminate discrimination. To eliminate discriminatory factors it has to be seeded for the effect to occur in a few generations. We are not seeding it very well, as we are throwing a lot of weeds in with it.

If you want to quote me on something, to prove something, let me know and I will school you in how to use the quote function.

Try reading my posts again. Why is it that those that argue your points use lies and ignore things that are said in the discussion?

quote:

ORIGINAL: Hippiekinkster

That is Orion's "single standard": do nothing and pretend that everything is hunky-dory. Pretend there is no discrimination. America is now officially color-blind, according to 55% of whites, as well as the "law". Discrimination is illegal; therefore, employers can't possibly be discriminating; ipso facto. Just mind-boggling.

1) You lied as that link goes to no standard, just more evidence that there is discimination.

2) I have never said there is not discrimination.

3) Saying it is okay to discriminate for someone, because of their race or ethnicity, is hypocritical to saying discimination is bad. It is like sending mixed signals. If you do not believe that, look at some of the research done on social impact of cognitive developement of mixed signal messages (this is where many parents fuck up with "Do as I say not as I do), because we learn by seeing.

4) A level playing field apparently seems to be subjective and relies on opinion, as the things to supposedly level it, are contributing to the continuation of discrimination. As long as their are lines of division, people will make decisions based upon those lines, sometimes even subconsciously.

5) Your's and other's "reasons" for discriminating for someone, is justification for hypocricy. People need to earn what they get (merit), or the value of it is less.

I concur.
Reverse discrimination IS discrimination. Period.

Says who?

Let`s use the analogy of a foot race.

If you start the race and hold back the black runners and let the white runners lap the track a few times,you call that discrimination.

If you finally recognize and stop the discrimination and let the black runners run "freely," they`ll still lose the race b/c the white runners are miles ahead already.

You can`t you can`t call the race fair just because you stopped the discrimination.

Same is so in society.

You also can`t say that things are all even-steven just because there`s supposedly no discrimination any more(something we know is not true)

If we don`t allow the black runners to catch up,the race will never be fair.

The same is so in society.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I asked earlier in the thread,...if it isn`t discrimination that`s holding people of color back,what is?
Is there something amiss with African Americans or black culture, that`s holding them back?
I think it`s the discrimination, that`s doing it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

The notion that it`s black institutions that are responsible for people`s prejudices and negative attitudes towards African Americans is ridiculous.

Then we go back to the beginning of time?
After all, we all have been discriminated against at one time or another.
Who says how far back is far enough?
Do we all go back to our roots and leave America for the Indian people who were here in the first place? (unless we go back even further)
Does something I do today for someone of Indian race make up for the injustices and indignities suffered at the hands of others?
I am a woman.
Women were discriminated against.
I think I should earn anything I get on my own merit, and not with a false head start because of it.

Owner59 -> RE: Racist (3/16/2008 6:35:58 PM)

Great non answer.

Owner59 -> RE: Racist (3/16/2008 6:49:29 PM)

   If you`d like ,as a woman you could opt out of the anti-discrimination laws protecting women.

After all,you don`t need them. Do you?

Let's not. The analogy is racist. It only holds true if the runners represent races, not people. In life, every generation is new set of runners. Just because one generation's race wasn't run fair doesn't mean the next one's can't be.

Absolutely not.
I have not taken advantage of those.
Now, back to our discussion, where we left off.
Can you please give me a reasonable answer to my answer to your scenario above?
'great non-answer' was about the most disingenuous non-answer I've seen.
Thank you.

How can you be so sure?

Do you vote?

If the answer is yes,then you have benefited from anti-discrimination laws.

Are you suggesting that all women don`t in-directly if not directly benefit from these laws?

Come on, now.

Hippiekinkster -> RE: Racist (3/16/2008 7:27:40 PM)

Here is one of your "points", Orion.
"So if someone is non-white and says the same thing, then it is valid? I think some people are a racist and don't know it, because they are a racist in a way against whites, it is okay. What was that about hypocricy? "
Explain to me how African-Americans can be "racist" against whites. Explain to me how Black people keep whites out of the job market. Explain to me how Blacks "redline" whites. Explain to me how whites are stopped by police much more frequently than blacks because of racial profiling. Explain to me how Blacks give whites harsher sentences for the same crime. And look at these statistics: 3 times as many blacks commit hate crimes against whites as vice versa. From Wikipedia:
"58.6 percent of the 7,330 known offenders were white and 20.6 black. More than half, 52 percent, of the 9,652 victims identified were targeted because of race.[23]"

It can't be as long as there is still discrimination.

In order for that comparison to be correct a woman's vote would need to be worth more than a man's in order to compensate for past wrongs.  However, in that case the correct solution was applied and an equal vote was given to all. Thus equality was established in that one regard.  Now, if we had given women a vote of 1 and 1/10 then it would be along the lines of what your advocating.

Anti-discrimination is not equal to the psuedo equations they use to try to offset past group based wrongs, that methodology always results in more discrimination. How long have these programs been going? Since the 60's? If they worked black people would be on par with asians by now in terms of upward mobility. But they aren't. So, you either have to come to the conclusion that such programs really don't work, or that whitey just hates black people, but doesn't care if "yellow people" make more than he does. It breaks down in logic eventually. As in white racists don't like asians either.

So, what is it? Is the white man just still after black people, and not other groups? Seems odd that "the man" would just hate one group so much and let another thrive.

Owner59 -> RE: Racist (3/16/2008 8:37:58 PM)

    Every year 20/20 or 60 Minutes does a story where they look for available apartments and send whites to apply as well as people of color.

And every year,the Caucasians get the apartment and the others don`t.

That has nothing to do with affirmative action or the NAACP.

That`s about bigotry,straight up.

The same thing happens nation wide with jobs,loans,red-lining,etc.

Until and when that black couple get the apartment(or job,loan,etc.) with the hidden cameras running,we need to do something.

Maybe, but if one thing is clear to me anyway, what "we" have been doing doesn't work.
