Status: offline 		For the reasons listed above, I support a blind admissions system.
Difficult to do, I'm sure, but, as with all things worth doing, can be done.

No one's opinion is gospel.
Erm...except God's.
I am sure He has people of all different races who both agree with Him, and disagree.
This is a debate, He is in a unique position in which to see all sides of this argument. Hence, the reason He was mentioned many times.

Status: offline 		It is difficult to achieve a blind system.  Three years ago the UK removed candidates names from their applications to reduce prejudice, with limited success.  It should be said, the unis are trying everything they can within law to change their make-up.  But society's swing to the right here has been accompanied by a fashionable heterodoxy of "anti-PC", more dogmatic than that it seeks to overturn. 

I don't see the advances achieved by the Civil Rights movement as having created a system that supplants white hegemony just yet.

Frontline input is great but it would appear that the ability to "see the other side" studiously eludes those who don't see the wood for the trees.

The fact that independent schools (where rich people pay for privileges) are funding research to block universities broadening their intake only supports my point.  The fact you are so passionately concerned about the fortunes of a social class that has treated you with contempt for generations is illuminating.

Status: offline 		I had a friend who checked "African American" on her collage form. She went in for her interview as was told she lied because she was white. She was born in South Africa to an American father and an African mother, who was white. The school rejected her application for this reason, she sued and won. Affirmative Action hurts some, helps some, but to be told you can't have something, be it work, scholarships, college admission, whatever because you are white is also racist. The best person should get the "prize" not because of their skin color. Just My thoughts.

I posted my views on  UK public skool welfare scrounging from the tax payer when you were still wetting you tongue. lol

I can't help but wonder if the people that want a blind admissions process don't know much about the admissions process (in particular among ivy league schools which I do have some experience in since i've volunteered for a few years with my alma matter in the admissions process).  Its highly overly simplifying it to believe that race is a numeric input on the applications and that is what literally makes or breaks it (despite the stories that start with, "I have a friend who....").

Specifically ivy league universities are looking for diversity and that doesn't mean racial/ethnic diversity.  They are looking for diversity in terms of who the students are, what their story is, and where they come from (geographic diversity tends to be pretty important also).  They look for unique, driven, achievers that have something to contribute and can handle the demanding coursework and can take the degree and do great things in whatever area they have a passion for. 

I think something also to remember is that people admitted are qualified to be there, I think the student profiles at the ivy's (I have a prior post on this thread that has links to them) show that they all admit very qualified and diverse students.  So I think there's definitely a disconnect between the perception that minorities are taking up tons of slots and the actual facts (Dartmouth's student population was all of 7% black).

P.S. - As a small sidepoint, I do interviews as part of the volunteering, and for both schools they have very strict guidelines about what you can and cannot ask or talk about with students.  And they aren't remotely alone in providing very clear and strict guidelines on how to interview students.  Additionally, unless they are a staff person (which almost never happens these days since colleges are innundated with applications, they typically all use alumni labor to do interviews), the interviewer wouldn't know the persons race - I'm lucky to get a name, phone number, and possible major for the student I interview beforehand.

I hope a concrete example such as yours will help in getting them to understand the problem, rather than sheepishly repeat the hearsay.

Status: offline 		Being racist and not being able to discriminate, is still being racist. You seem to only have a problem with effect, and not cause. Someone of any color or any ethnicity can be "racist", as the term is used today. All you are showing is more of the same, that discrimination does occur. Go back and read where I have said that I agree that discrimination occurs, then maybe you can move on to posting actual answer that go with the questions.

Explain to me how African-Americans can be "racist" against whites. Explain to me how Black people keep whites out of the job market. Explain to me how Blacks "redline" whites. Explain to me how whites are stopped by police much more frequently than blacks because of racial profiling. Explain to me how Blacks give whites harsher sentences for the same crime.
