What if it's not some joke?  What if she was really *trapped* in whatever cage trapped her.  What if we read in ten years her story about the world that she tried to heal in was merciless and considered her (and what happened to her) a joke?

I don't undersatand how we (me included) see the humor in this and still feel compassion or whatever, and give a rats ass about what happens next in the soap opera of humanity.  Why do we care (assuming that "we" = people who care - for no good reason - about what happens to other people)?

I havent read the rest of the thread.. but I heard the news story. I knew there would be a lot of jokes about it.. how could there not be? It has a lot of funny elements to it. Being stuck on the crapper for 2 years does make for a lot of punch lines. However I think it is also the element of someones fear being so bad that they simply could not remove themself from the toliet.. ( then not even if they wanted to because thier fear had held them in place they didnt notice thier skin had grown around the seat.. ) that we as generaly mentaly healthy folk.. ( ok with the exception of a glaring one or two of us...) can not concieve of it. So to protect ourselves from thinking of the mental hell this poor woman had to have gone through in her life before the whole bathroom shut in.. not to mention the hell it had to have been being on the toilet for 2 years ( I cant stand being in there for 10 mins. ) we make horrible jokes about it. This is the reason why Jeffery Dalimer had so many jokes. We simply could not process it. We didnt want to.

This is also why so many Police and firefighters have a raunchy sense of humor. It is better to laugh then cry about it.

Do not think people as un caring and mean.. just they are protecting themselves from how awful this poor woman had it. We all assume how bad it had to have been. We just need to make light of it to process it.

after 2 hrs... we have an "Al Bundyesque" person in our house.. and after 2 hours I go in with the spray and flush them out. ( and yes we have 2 bathrooms. )

They have medical issues that makes them that way but the book gets taken away at the 2 hour mark.. and they get prodded.

i feel sorry for her embarrasement. I do think it was funny that whipple came to investigate. ( i know he is really been gone for awhile, )

CalifChick -> RE: Woman sits on boyfriend's toilet for 2 years (3/13/2008 2:51:04 PM)

I was wondering how long it would take before we got slapped for making fun of this woman.  Was it 65 posts?  Old people get bedsores if they lay in one place for too long without moving or being moved... Gotta think this woman has one hell of a potty-sore on her.

Obligatory joke since Gwyn mentioned Jeffrey Dahmer:  What did Dahmer say to Lorena Bobbitt after she cut off her husband's dick?

Answer:  You gonna eat that??

For the woman, one with a big arse; for the man, one that's totally clueless. I think a couple of unknowns would work.

You and me then, babe.  Let's go, Poppa needs new shoes!

Oi! My arse isn't THAT big.

Sheesh, even MY arse isn't that big!

exactly.. it is a coping mechinisim that keeps us from cracking up...

it is how at the station we could look at autopsy photos and make funny/gross comments over eating hamburgers.. or look at traffic accident photos and do the same. You play gross out. You have to have that detachment and learn to laugh it off other wise it takes small chunks out of you each time you see something awful.

You get to see lots of awful things in those jobs. No one talks about it much... but you do. It either makes you an ugly person.. or you realize life is worth a lot more then you prev. thought and you walk away with that twisted ass sense of humor.

Gwyn,
who can sit through an autopsy in person and eat an big mac. ( won a bet that way once)

I am not referencing the humour, but what you say about individuals who feel unable to cope or leave a room or area like that.
I get that people have this difficulty, in a sense, it is their coping mechanism.  But this woman had a boyfriend and he took 2 years to 'help' her?  That to me just defies logic.  Were their no friends?  Did no one miss her?  These are the questions that is worrying when people aren't even missed when they go 'missing' for two years.
