Aneirin -> The Human Race. (3/15/2008 8:46:20 AM)

The human race, made up of so many different races, but all just people from different parts of the world, their genetics, no fault of their own, just a product of their ancestors.

So why, in this world of civilised and learned men do we still seek to classify people into types, races etc?

What practical use does seeking to classify people serve ?

Will we ever be any different?

FullCircle -> RE: The Human Race. (3/15/2008 8:53:04 AM)

You forget that people also choose to classify themselves with their love and pride of their cultural heritage etc.

No it will never be different I have seen the future and in planet of the apes the chimpanzees still segregate themselves from the orangutans and treat them as inferiors.[8|]

because the world is DOOOOOOOMED!!!!! DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOMED!!!

pahunkboy -> RE: The Human Race. (3/15/2008 9:06:23 AM)

we will always have survival of the fitest.   we will always place people of various groups in categories...at times that makes it easier to know what we are referring to.

the dominent culture is not always the best.

the problem with todays holy grail- is that, in the case of the US, it can only be our way the right way; with no regard for other modes of thought which actually could be better for all involved.
this thinking is short sighted and flawed.

a good idea SHOULD stand on its own wieght. however- we see less and less of that.

so we have a culture where no one is ever responsible- nor is any management or any governement. medicroty is celebrated.

this is way short sighted.  we will reap un-good things due to this narrow and selfish way of doing business.

If there weren't different races, mankind would find other ways to form cliques and groups. It's just our nature, apparently.

kittinSol -> RE: The Human Race. (3/15/2008 9:56:01 AM)

Aneirin - there is one human race. There are human types. Genetically, race is a contentious issue at best. I maintain races are a cultural construct, not a biological reality - although in areas such as social sciences, the term is used for the purpose of research. In the public arena, it gives way to heated debates such as the one you've prepared for us on this thread [;)] .

If you've ever interested to go through thirty pages of thread on the same subject, you might find a few interesting things in there: http://www.collarchat.com/m_1181582/mpage_1/tm.htm

Or you could read the yellow pages and find there is only one type of plumber.

Because we are not learned and we are not civilised, we have just convinced ourselves we are.

We know there is only one race, the human race but despite that, we keep talking about races.

We are so learned we know we are destroying our habitiat but we are so civilized we don't fucking care, the next generation will inherit that problem. Tough on them!

We complain about other people wanting to keep their identity yet jealously guard our own.

Sadly, as a species we are deeply flawed.

What's that got to do with this? I've seen that metaphore before, but what's its relevance to the subject at hand?

KenDckey -> RE: The Human Race. (3/15/2008 10:41:24 AM)

I recognize 3 races    Cacazoid, Mongoloid, Negroid (can't spell so might not be spelt right).  The rest is BS

Why is it people ask why things are categorised and then they categorise the categorisation of those things into phenotype and genotype?

The simple fact is for all intents and purposes things are categorised such as plumbers. I’ve not yet proven plumbers are a different race but I’ve been studying their phenotype closely and they all tend to be overweight bastards. [8|]

Don't forget the always seen butt crack. If someone claims to be a plumber, and they squat, but you don't see half an inch of butt crack...they are NOT a true plumber.

Hey, its progress from when people thought the others who didn't look like them were monsters (trolls, menehunies, giants, Gussucks, ect) or animals.   Trolls are real, its what the vikings called the innuit derrived people in Northern Europe.  I have long hypothesised that many of the "magic" races in historical terms are based on similar situations.  Menehunies (little people in Hawaiian legend) were real.  They were all slaughtered as demons.  The Giant for the Dvid and Goiath story---imagine tribes of grain eating semetic people.  They would be rather short, and Shaquile O neil shows up on a battle field.   It was actually a huge step forward that the Catholic church declared the interior South Americans to be human, though it seems insanely racist in todays terms

There are regional characteristics that are mostly associated with locations from several thousand -200 years ago, not "races".
I am half serious when I say it is at least progress.  The idea that they are still human even though different and inferior (notice pretty much every group thinks it is the superiour one), is better than considering them sub or non human.   It's time to get moving on it though.  We are one race.

Aylee -> RE: The Human Race. (3/15/2008 11:02:31 AM)

Because the mind NEEDS to catagorize things for better retrival of information.  Men do this, women do that, teenagers do this, two year olds do that, blacks do this, yellows do that. . .

Individuals may vary, but grouping is something that we do in order to order our minds.

Much like we group seeded and seedless berries.

It gives a starting point.

The answer may have already been given, but....... I tend to believe much of it is a way to feel above others. Not all, and not always, but it's part of it.

We may eventually get past that, but it won't be in our lifetime, nor our children's.

You mean like classifying people as dominant or submissive?
