luckydog, thanks for bringing this up.

At www.savetibet.org, they have a message to the Olympic chair, which you can sign and send, if you agree that the Olympics need to keep their promise not to be complicit in China's human rights abuses.

Let the kinky constituency drive the number of messages sent, up!

Damn skippy.

Beijing needs to stop its campaign to eradicate the Tibetan people and the Tibetan culture.

The Olympics is meant as a celebration of human nobility and human dignity. It should not be used to give credibility to a totalitarian state bent on genocide.

I often wonder if people are aware that Tibet was a theocracy that still practiced feudalism and slavery before it was occupied by China.  It wasn't this spiritual paradise that people seem to believe.  It's arguable whether they have less freedom under the Chinese than they did before.

I think the letter to the Olympic chairperson might should say that.
Diplomacy and all, requires a few more, and softer, words.
But that's the truth in two sentences!

Acknowledgment of the truth, that's what the Chinese government cannot stand, that's what will bring them down.

So, are you suggesting that the Tibetan people should not be supported, in protesting the abuses and oppression of the Chinese government, because they had another oppressive system of rule, previously?

(Again, the message you can sign and send, is here:

I didn't say that.  I just think a lot of the people who wear "Free Tibet" t-shirts and shout it at rallies have no idea about the history involved.  The same people treat the Dalai Llama like he is some sort of hero, when he is anything but.  He was part of the system that oppressed the people of Tibet before the Chinese arrived.  I won't sign a useless petition online.  It doesn't hold any weight at all.  The situation in Tibet is no different than dozens of other places around the world with oppressive governments.

Don't let the Chinese off the hook by only clamoring over Tibet.  If we are going to boycott, then I want it to be over a lot more than that.

Here is a National Geographic video about pre-Chinese Tibet.  You'll notice peasants wearing shackles.

Here's a good article about the "Friendly Feudalism" practiced by the Llamas in pre Chinese Tibet.  Free Tibet indeed.

Nope.  Just don't go to their country, or buy their merchandise (if you can avoid it. That second one is hard).

Are you arguing that because Tibet's past was less than democratic, the world should just blow them off?

Less than democratic?  They were more than that.  It was a feudal state.  95% of the population worked for 5% of the population.  They weren't free to come and go as the wanted.  They were not provided an education.  They were taxed for everything.  They were slaves.  The Chinese provide them all with free education, free medical care, and they do not tax them for any of it.  You should really learn more about what it is that you are supporting.  I know this is a trendy cause, but the facts are what they are.

I guess you don't get understatement.

You didn't answer my question.

This is what I get for reading the scroll with sleepy eyes.  I thought it said "Free Tidbit Now."  I was hoping for some wise information a la Hints From Heloise.  *sigh*

That's right, Slaveboy...  They went in out of the goodness of their hearts and brought human rights up to the standards of the Cultural Revolution.

How about we boycott Beijing over selling us poison?
