the way to stop carb craving is to give up carbs for 2 weeks. Seriously. the first 3 or 4 days is horrendous and you feel like a junkie. By the second week you have a 3rd the appetite and then healthy diets are easy then as you've shrunk your stomach and dont have those pesky sugar cravings getting in the way.

He is dead, he slipped on an icy sidewalk and struck his head; he went into a coma, and his organs shut down, and that is what killed him.

He had a viral infection in his heart, NOT diet related.

alright Level..help me here. I was next going to make an ass of myself by asking if he was the one who was killed by his jilted lover...Jean Somethingorother

Ah.......... Scarsdale?? I know what you're talking about.....

Herman Tarnower, I think?

Low carb IS heart healthy, far moreso than the sugary, carb-laden, unnatural diet the AMA touts. It is devastatingly effective in reducing triglycerides, boosting HDL, and improving cholesterol ratios, which are far more indicative of heart health than the outdated tests many doctors still use today.

Level...i am not saying a low carb diet is a bad thing. But....if you have a green veggie with lunch and dinner you are looking at 15-20 carbs for both meals. Sometimes people go overboard and try to have NO carbs at all, just protein.

What the OP stated to TracyTaken was she ate 12 whatevers, at one carb each, totalling 12 carbs for the day. She sure was not talking about brussel sprouts.

And I didn't mean to sound like I was jumping down anyone's throat, holly. I apologize if it came across that way.

I eat between 20 and 35 total carbs a day, and I stand by the assertation that there is no such thing as an essential carb. I'm diabetic, and by doing so, have lost over 110 pounds, and completely gotten off all my meds.

Having said that, I'd also say that most folks would benefit hugely from just knocking their carbs to under 100 total a day, maybe down to 75 or so.....well, as long as they got them from fresh foods, that is. We're all different.....

christine1 -> RE: Is there any way to stop carb cravings? (3/18/2008 5:10:21 PM)

i'm sorry, but nobody is going to convince me that having a carrot or some corn on the cob is bad because it has too many carbs...there are plenty of foods out there that are healthy and have carbs.  (beans, potatoes, brown rice, legumes etc)

faerytattoodgirl -> RE: Is there any way to stop carb cravings? (3/18/2008 5:11:30 PM)

chocolate, chips, soda, pizza, ice cream

h and btw, I am not attempting to go into ketosis...I know it is bad for my kidneys...generally I do get more than 20 g of carbs per day.

Ketosis will not harm your kidneys. Or your heart, or your brain, etc, etc.

As holly said, large amounts of protein, if you ALREADY HAVE damaged kidneys, MAY further weaken them. But, even then, I'm seeing some docs that are beginning to disagree with that.

Carb cravings affect different people in different ways. You may never get rid of the cravings, but usually, if you stay on a low carb diet for a few months, they'll pass.

And, carbs are carbs..... once they go into your body, they turn to sugar.

when you go into ketosis, you start peeing muscle. That is not good. It is rough on your kidneys and long term CAN cause kidney failure. Why do you think they always do urine tests on eating disorder patients to check the ketones? It is NOT healthy.

Boy46,

The title of this forum is Off Topic DISCUSSION.  We are discussing nutrition. DISCUSSING. We are not laying down the law to anyone...pounding our fists on our respective computer desks and saying "This is how you will eat!!!"

And i can't help but wonder about your comment "there are people here with a wide knowledge about it but i would search in other sites". Perhaps YOU, young man, should take your own advice and search elsewhere...can't have anyone that is not a professional giving you bad advice...now can you?

Have a sunshiney day.

Yes, it is a discussion.  That was *his* considered advice, which, even if you, personally, don't agree, seems well-reasoned and based upon sincere concern.

Even a "young" man might be allowed his opinion, here, don't you agree?  If you don't, I promise the forum shall grind to a halt.

Carbs aren't bad, but having too much of anything in your diet is, like the fruit you listed, it is fructose, which assimulates to sugar, sugar then jolts you up, and you later have the down, lethargic feeling. That is why doing differ proteins balances, you don't just have to eat meat, try almonds or any nutz, legumes. Also, being female condsider your hormonal levels~! Aren't we lucky? We are here, there and everywhere all month. If your approaching that time, your estrogen drops, your progesterone peeks, and the beasties of wanting to eat sugar and refined carbs lurk~! No biggy, just replace all the bad shit you want to eat with good stuff that taste yummy.
Something to also consider is, if you have excess candida in your body it makes you crave carbs horribly....perhaps you should consider a "Cleanse", you can get easy kits at the health food store. Yeast lives in your gut, and intestinal track, can also go systemic.

dollparts85 -> RE: Is there any way to stop carb cravings? (3/18/2008 5:17:47 PM)

"Ketosis occurs when the amount of carbohydrate fuel- the fuel that is needed to run the body - drops below a critical level, forcing the body to turn first to protein and then to fat reserves to do the work carbohydrates normally do. When protein is deflected in this manner, it releases nitrogen into the blood stream, placing a burden on the kidneys as they try to excrete excessive urinary water due to sodium loss. When fat is likewise deflected, the breakup releases fatty acids, or ketones, into the bloodstream, further burdening the kidneys. If ketosis continues for long periods of time, serious damage to the liver and kidneys can occur, which is why most low-carbohydrate, or ketogenic diets recommend only short-term use, typically 14 days. Many nutritionists caution their patients-especially women in the early stages of pregnancy-against following them at all."

high five you for your weight loss!!!    And i was in no way offended. My problem with low carb diets is some think of carbs only as the white flour foods, cookies, potatoes, etc. So they eliminate them and begin to lose weight. THEN they find out veggies are carbs too and, hey...I lost weight by eliminating THOSE carbs, so I will go whole hog and get rid of all of them.

then their hair falls out.

not if you eat it standing up, Christine. And there are no calories/carbs in cookie crumbs....thats why i always hit a bag of Oreo's with a hammer.

I won't get into the back and forth yah yahing over low carb diets, but will say that I lost 45 pounds by READING and FOLLOWING the Atkins Diet Program...... not just assuming and making it up as I went along.

If you are trying to follow Atkins, then do it correctly...... the way he wrote it.  Eat the carbs you are supposed to eat and you'll be consuming way more healthy carbohydrates and fiber in a day than most people consume in a week.

Anyway, L-Glutamine helps curb the cravings for sugar and carbohydrates in general.

Good luck.
