You know the thread is a thanks for their service. Service men and women sacrifice a great deal to do what they do. If you do not agree, just go to another thread and post the nasty remarks or disagreement. I believe that courtesy eludes many.

The leaders are part of the story - the leaders get their power from your average man on the street - the old adage: you get the government you deserve.

(Nevermind that they are being screwed themselves via "stop gap" measures because Bush & Co are too wussy to re-start the draft, even though we are supposedly "in the fight of our lives.") No. They signed up to serve because (the majority) were poor, and had damn few options after getting out of high school. No jobs. No money for college, or even to move where there might be jobs... so they join the military as an "out." Survival.

The understanding has always been: "We put our asses on the line, but you (the government) don't put us in harms way unless it's the last resort." Care to take a guess who broke this covenant?

A perfect example of why Europe is underspending on it's own defense, and pretty much relying (the UK excepted ... partially) for the American "foreign killer mecenaries" to protect them, so that they can pour their national resources into socialist economic welfare systems that hinders their ability to remain a vibrant force of civilization, and will ultimately result in their slow cultural and political destruction.

I feel no need to defend our troops from a decadent and dying society.  My revenge will occur over time as your nation sinks even lower into the morass of national indifference and cultural extinction.

*shrugs*

Or, when the US finally decides that the growing ungrateful and snotty populations of Europe should be given exactly what they say they want ... a world where the US stays within its borders and allows China, Russia, North Korea, and every other tin-pot nation which does spend more than a pittance on their military to dictate your continent's foreign, economic and public policies.

Slavery is great afterall, isn't it?

I have a certain amount of sympathy for this point of view, but in this day and age it just isn't good enough to say "I had no other choice and I didn't understand".....while destroying thousands of lives in the process......it's about time they made an effort to understand and make an informed choice.

That's an interesting approach, Firm. 

Many wealthy German industrialists, militarists and landowners believed Britain and the US were decadent societies and that Germany was the only possible saviour of European culture (they included the US in this) in the face of the perceived threat from Bolshevism and the Slavs.

'Pretty much along the same thought process as you, Firm. I'm sure you're aware of what happened to the Germans in their clamour to remain "strong": they totally over-estimated themselves and bit off far more than they could chew.......

Revenge? Good god......what on earth are you talkin' about?

As it happens, my country of birth was never, and is not, particularly nationalistic; you're confusing us with the French and Germans. The English Empire was underpinned by individuals pursing their individual business initiatives.

Your post reminds of that group that shows up at soldier's funerals waving placards accusing them of murder. It's your right, of course. But now we have to consider the judgment of the source.

Bully my ass. I've gone forearm deep in gore to stop a bleed, I'd do it for an American, or an Iraqi. I'd do it for a Czechoslovakian, and some dude that just boated over to the US in an inner tube. It doesn't matter who the fuck you are. I was a medic, my job was to save people, regardless of WHO caused the injury.

I do agree that the whole Iraq thing hasn't been managed well as it could have been.. but then again, war is messy shit.

That's fine, but your assumption is wide of the mark; I have better things to do with my time than wave placards around or concern myself with soldiers' funerals.

What? War is noble?

a) Responsibility for choice and actions. 'Choose to enlist; accept responsibility for the consequences.
b) The foe has vastly inferior firepower......noble? bullying is more accurate.
c) How many Iraqis have been displaced or killed as a direct result of the American led invasion?

The use of vastly superior fire power to dictate to a weaker group.

Call it what you will; I'm not terribly interested in the supermarket label, i.e. "freedom and/or following orders".

In reality, a good, long, hard look in the mirror would result in acknowledgement of what this amounts to when the spin is stripped from the bones: a matter of bullying.

Unless, of course, this board amounts to following the dictat of an OP? Over this way, we tend to pride ourselves on independent thought; I'm fairly confident you have a similar tradition in the United States.

Status: offline 		There are times when I wonder what the REAL reason for going into Iraq was. First it was WMD, then it was "regime change" then it was to help establish a "foothold democracy" in the region... any day now I expect to hear that we went in because Bush heard they had good coffee...

Frankly, I suspect that the real reason was that Hussein was building up too large of an army for his neighbors comfort. (The Saudis) Bush, he and his family being their lapdogs, obliged them by eliminating the concern... and dropped to their knees to give them blowjobs for good measure.

So now the Saudis have a buffer zone. And they thank us by putting the screws to our thumbs via oil prices.

But maybe that's just me.
