If you want to write a history novel with strong warriors...you fastly end with the Vikings, Spartans or Romans.
Because to the West..that is the past.

btw they still work like this; Conan the BArbarian, 300 spartans....etc.
Our past is always an example for settings.

Besides that..the Romans (please correct me if I am wrong) had more "higher" purposes for females. They had female gods they worshipped.

Anyway...in the end it is just about what a certain person filters out of the books...and how He uses it in his life. The setting doesn't matter much..because it is the past.

G'morning, folks,
Hello, Sojourner's slave,

quote:

ORIGINAL: OmegaG
he said that he'd read somewhere that Norman had an interest in ancient history and would often insert some tid-bit, usually about something he'd just learned more about.

John F. Lange, a philosophy professor, is a man of many talents. If I am not mistaken, he also holds a secondary degree in history, & I believe it showed through in his novels.

The man has a deep love of nature, mankind & the nobility of the human spirit, particularly as expressed in the wondrous discoveries people have made throughout history. Of course, he may not appear thusly to others. ;-D

What the author wrote, in the Gor series & in his other works (fiction & non-) does not support the dogmatic approach one may expect after observing many "Gorean groups".

It's early, I'm rambling & in dire need of more coffee, but I'll extend the same offer Aswad has -- for anyone with genuine questions my cmail is open.

Well wishes & hot java,

~Kimveri

Roman mythology directly derives from the Greeks where the cult of the Goddess was an essential part of worship.

If you're interested, I recommend you look at "Portrait of a Priestess: Women and Ritual in Ancient Greece", by Joan Breton Connelly.

Would you specify what you meant by "higher purpose females" ?

Some of us ask questions out of curiousity first to determine if our interests "may" lie in Gor, before having to lay out a few hundred $s to read   all the books,   sort of like having an interest in sports cars if I went and decided to check out the dealerships and to ask questions  of the cars to decide what I wanted  and walk into the Ford dealership and they answered my questions offered a test drive in the Mustang I might find myself interested in it but if I walked into the GM dealership and was told  not top bother asking questions unless I buy the Camaro first so I know what I can do first before wasting their time asking questions....I would be running to beat hell out of that dealership.  The Gor forum responses are often much like that dealership when it comes to newbies who are simply trying to determine if they may have an  interest before investing a lot of time, energy  and money and as a  they lose a lot of potential newscomers, it happens here on the main forums boards sometimes as well but not as harshly and often  as in the gorean forums which is why so many of us stay way clear of it, new comers may not be aware of the protocols for asking questions and therefore are not intentionally being rude.      Just my personal thoughts and vews.

Yup there were both Gods and Godesses, often in pairs also not all Heros were of divine birth.

Not macho enough  . What I love with the Greeks is how opened they were about human shortcomings - and how they infused their divinities and heroes with human qualities.

Look at Herakles, that paragon of masculinity: he loved going with both men and women. Imagine that on Gor? I can't.

Norman could have taken buckets of inspiration from other periods of history, such as Greco-Buddhism, but he chose to fixate on something more immediately appealing to late sixties adolescent boys... I think he felt threatened in his masculinity, and that he let off steam on Gor.

Which is perfectly fine... within its own limitations.

Thank you for the insight Kimveri, I'll admit that I've been so busy reading these books (and others on my shelves) that I haven't searched for a bio on the author.  The description of the paper making (maybe in book one) was particularly poinient to me as some day, when I grow up, I want to be an Egyptologist (or an archaelogist that specializes in the Barbarian cultures following the fall of Rome, who knows).  And it is interesting to me when something like that or the description of the ships jumps out at me and I can recognize what period and culture in history he's alluding too.

I know that some literary critics don't like authors borrowing from real life, but I enjoy it.

It has indeed been an interesting and entertaining read thus far. I would like to add to this bubbling cauldron several comments made from experience:
  • There are three areas of the "Gorrean Experience"
    • The Gor Books
    • The Gorean Role Play Arena
    • The Gorean Lifestyle
  • At times, there are large areas of difference between any of those three. Some who read the books do so because they actually enjoy them which is good. However, there Gorean Role P:layers who have never read the books and usually work on one or more web sites who give one person's ideas about Gor. Not a good idea for as it has been stated many time on the Gor forum that you need to read thre books as you get then and again several times in sequence to begine to understand the mindsets. (It should be understood that the Philosophy espoused by Norman in the Gor books and oft quotged come from the writings of Friedrich Nietzsche was a German philosopher of the late 19th century who challenged the foundations of Christianity and traditional morality). Gor espouses much of what made various civilizations or peoples great in history. Common factors include Courage, Singleness of purpose, Strength of character, Honour, Honesty, Loyalty and so on.. Where the Gorean Role Player and the Gorean Lifestyler oft differ and clash is in the question of reality. In roleplay kajiri all appear to be young women, lithe, experts in exotic dance, etc. In realty I have met only a handfull who meet that crierior. Role Play is fun and one way for a short tiume to become emersed in the world of Gor, fight bloody and corageous battles, ride the legendary tarn or trek a kaiila accross the vast sandy deserts of the Tahari. Not so different to the SCA other than Gorean Rple Play tends to remain on line. The Gorean Lifestyler however, understands reality very well indeed. he knows he lives on Planet Earth, tarns and kaiila do not exist. It will land him in jail for years should he attempt a collaring raid at the local shopping mall. he understands full well that he must live within the bounds of the society his home resides. What he does do is to take the Gorean beliefs and principles as his own and leads a life ruled by the strict codes. I agree that others who are not Gorean live by similar codes too. many M/s relationships could well be Gorean except for protocol and terminology. Other lifestyles have similar ways of living, the Old Guard and my own Victorian Lifestyle are very similar.
  • On the Gor Board, there are the same variety of people as inhabit this side or the forum. One or two seem to act as the self proclaimed "God of Gor" and have no truck with any who either have not proven their Goreanness to them personally, face to face. There are others who are more laid back and open to discussions rather than lectiuring. If there is a fault in some of the Gorean Lifrestylers it is an inability to laugh at themselves and a tendency to tersness boarding on rudeness when talking to people. Other gorean Lifestylers understand and are used to it but it canm be somewhat disconcerting to non Gorean folk.
To respond to the OP, a Free Woman of Gor is a woman who is not collared. This applies to any uncollared slave. This is supported by the books for an uncollared slave would be seen as a runaway and either collared or killed on site.

For those who remember me, they will know I spent nearly ten years as a Gorean Lifestyle Master and several years Rolplaying on line in Gor as well. Gorean Lifestyles like my own, are not based on BDSM. There is bondage and disclipline if you own a slave. However it is not depoendent on owning slaves. Slaves are the perks of being a Gorean Free as it is with the Victorian Lifestyle.

propably just my bad english to be honost

I mean..Goreans see females as slaves....even the free females..in their heart. are jealous at slaves (or kajira's).
Often they are compared with Romans. But Romans worshipped females....so I called goddesses "higher purpose females".
Not sure if a Gorean from the books would kneel for the Roman Goddesses

I think I tried to explain....that some want to see the great roman empire
reflected in their lifestyle..but it also contradicts it.
As Iron Bear said... (interesting post)...some are willing to discuss this openly..others just cut everything off.

funny thing also.....beeing gay was normal for Spartans, Greeks (Alexandre the Great for example) and other civilisations that are used in the comparison with Gor. I am not sure if many are proud on that.
(this is not an attack on gays....just used as an illustration...my appology if I hurt some one)

Gasp. So yeah... a woman fulfills her true biological destiny when she's in a state of utter slavery to a man... otherwise, she is just a halfling, something unfinished. Hmmmm... interesting  .

Don't let Hera and Artemis hear you say that: they'll make mincemeat out of you.

Bah, divinities from the Antiquity only required a few bloody sacrifices to stay happy - they had other fish to fry than making sure little men knelt in front of them  .

mmmm I thought the same, but couldn't find it back. PErhaps he knew it all from his arts degree.

Not exactly. Depends on the Goddess. They were known for punishing upity mortals, or even those in the wrong place at the wrong time. A man who accidently saw Artemis naked was, I believed, turned into stone. Though the Goreans might actually like Roman Goddesses. For all Hera's power, she married Zeus because he raped her and mostly defered to his decisions, even though she caused all sorts of mayhem and trouble behind his back. Definately not a happy marriage.

You're correct for the most part - but remember that Hera and Zeus are Greek names; and that Roman gods are direct descendants from the Greeks. Artemis certainly was not a submissive to anybody, and Hera was definitely the brains of her marriage to Zeus. Zeus raped just about anything that moved, so obviously Hera was part of his loot  .

Dogma, that's the word I was looking for - it seems to be set in stone, on Gor.

*chuckles at the pun*

I think people who are of the BDSM ilk or even vanilla can have as deep of a philosphy as some of the Goreans. Just because they read a Sci-Fi novel does not make them any more well equipted or any more moral, or solid in thier beliefs. I think it is the general feel of "we are better then and holier thou" that pisses some folks off. Not all folks who are BDSMers are just into the whips and chains. Some are into more of the philosophy and spiritual aspects. There are many schools of thoughts on how to go about it.. and no touchstone of one great way of accomplishing it.. or I should say Homestone. But it does not lessen thier path then that of a Gorean. Heck I have seen loads of people on both sides Gor and BDSM who simply wanted a cute bondage bunny to play with and some roleplay. *shrugs* If that is thier thing.. more power to em. Not my place to sneer down my nose at them.. it just isnt for me.

Gwyn,
who thinks Artemis had to be one hell of a dyke. Whooo! Even the Spartans worshiped her.

Gwyn

My bdsm is indistinguishable from my spiritual life.
i am NOT saying i am spiritual because i serve. What i am saying is that it makes me feel spritually whole to do so.
i was blessed over twenty years ago as a Tibetam Buddhist and baptised as an adult convert christian seven years ago to the day. Yet i do not follow any dogma or feel the need to attend any ceremony.
All the best religious doctrines and their Holy Books find equal place upon my shelves and it is actually always, and i repeat always a question of conscience whether i refer to them as Holy or as reference or as inspiration.
i do however also hold academic qualifications and my training was rigorous in determining fact from fiction. i do not hold 'fact' as necessarily more insprational than 'fiction' as i am also a writer.
In times of need i can find solace in either 'fact' or in 'fiction'...indeed my faith in these moments of despair is usually that which has me turn to the first book that coms to hand and simply open at a page.
It does not have to be anything at all about bdsm to inspire me as to which way to turn, what to do next, how to stronger, truer or more faithful.
At the moment i am reading The Foundations of Buddhism by Rupert gethrin.
In Tibetan Buddhism women were goddesses. My favourite is Sky Dancer:
http://www.keithdowman.net/books/sd.htm

However as for Gor? i simpy myself don't find solace or wisdom or inspiration there, because it always feels like the inside of someoneelse's creative imagination.
As for dogmatic middle European philosophy? same place as dogmatic middle European psychology: history.

~After that attempt to clarify basic concepts, it is relevant to ask the question, has woman been arbitrarily assigned these existential values, or do Emptiness and Awareness relate to her essential nature? According to the metaphysical systems that frame the psychological insights of numerous ancient cultures the physiological-sexual and psychological nature of woman is receptivity. The quality of receptivity, 'an enveloping openness', is evident in tantric symbols of the goddess: the lake, the well, the empty vase, and most graphically and ubiquitously, the yoni (vagina). ~
