outlier -> From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/22/2008 12:52:58 PM)

Inspired by the recent movie threads here;  I put forth this catagory.

What is the best book you have read that was turned into the worst movie?

The winner is to be determined by the distance in quality between the two.
Understand that a good book that became a mediocre movie has no possibility
of being a winner.  A bad book that became an awful movie is a non starter.

This is reserved for those absolute monuments to Hollywood insensitivity and
incompetence.  When a book that you knew would become part of your personal
treasured permanent library.  A companion to be revisited over time.  Something of
subtlety and debth which you returned to because it never failed to reward your visits.

And then the movie industry turned it into an awful piece of schlock.  Insipid beyond
words and devoid of redeeming values, social or otherwise.

The widest distance between the quality of the book and movie is going
to be the winner.  I will revisit the thread later with my personal nominee.
( I cannot bring myself to use the phrase 'personal favorite' in this context.)

But for now what are yours?

Edited to Add:  If you find yourself overwhelmed with possibilities,
then feel free to put them in catagories.

I have not read John Adams, but I've seen people on-line complaining about what a pice of crap the HBO movie is.

Try turning 320 pages into a script with dialogue, it's not that simple.

Get Shorty, by Elmore Leonard, High Fidelity, by Nick Hornby, and It, by Stephen King. The first two are not bad films; they just fall quite a bit short, when compared to the novels. Travolta does a nice job in GS, as does John Cusack in HF.

It, however........... do we have a turd icon here? No? Shame......

The Bonfire of the Vanities, by Tom Wolfe, is one I hear others toss out sometimes. I never read the book, so I can't say.....

......for me it has to be the aforementioned Dune, ace book - appalling film.......for petes sake, it rained at the end....

bipolarber -> RE: From Best Book to Worst Movie! (3/22/2008 3:03:29 PM)

I agree with blushes. I have an autographed 1st of "Exit to Eden." I read it about once a year. On my primary email, I use a line from it as my sig for email. I LOVE that book.

So, you can imagine my horror at learning that it was going to be thrown into a garbage disposal by the same inept jerk who produced Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley. I don't know which insult was worse: the addition of the "comedy relief team of O'Donell and Ackroyd, or the addition of the totally superfluous "diamond heist" subplot. (It was like something Diseny would do for one of those awful "Dexter Riley" college films.) The book deserved someone like the director from "Secretary" making it. Not this club handed moron who, in one interview, said: "Well, you have to dumb things like this down when you want middle America to accept them."

When an "artist" starts out disrespecting his audiance, you know the end result is going to suck!

Oh well, maybe in another 15 years, someone else can re-make it, and do a better job. (It wouldn't take much.)

The Lord of the Rings - the movies were turgid and indigestible, in spite of a few good bits.

It rains at the end of the novel too.
