I'm sitting here having bought this morning a 1kg bag of salted peanuts.

I know I have bought a bag of salted peanuts, because on the front of the bag in big letters it is written 'SALTED PEANUTS'.

Out of the corner of my eye I see another big word 'WARNING'.

I read further..'THIS PRODUCT MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF NUT'.

No kidding? Is that a fact?

Then I read further.. 'THIS PRODUCT IS UNSUITABLE FOR PEOPLE WITH A NUT ALLERGY.'

Get away! I don't believe it! It's incredible.

This reminds me of those signs on the motorway as you're leaving Dover heading towards London 'PLEASE DRIVE ON THE LEFT'

As if people don't know we drive on the left.

I mean, you've come off the ferry, driven through the terminal, gone through a roundabout, gone all the way round, up and over the terminal on a flyover, gone through another roundabout and you're 250 yards into the left hand carriageway of a motorway when you encounter the sign 'PLEASE DRIVE ON THE LEFT'

I mean, what's the point? There are signs as you drive off the ferry. Signs in three languages. And if you've forgotten and you're driving down the right hand carriageway, you're probably not going to see the sign anyway.

Do you ever get the feeling that you're being treated as a moron/inbecile/retard by someone or something?

Have you come across any other examples similar to the ones above?

Ah, but people are irredeemably stupid Stella and very clever.

I would not in any way put it past some clever clogs to plan to eat the peanuts and then sue for a million because there was no warning. Like the idiot who sued for McDonalds hot coffee burning them - well, duh, the coffee is hot? Who'd a thunk it?

But the signs at the ports - yes! At Felixstowe you encounter them about a mile from where the ferry docks. Assuming you'd not realised what was going on by then and had driven on the right through the port, past the police checkpoint and onto the A14, head-on into a dozen 40 tonne trucks coming into the port, you'd not see the signs anyway, as theyre on the other side of the road.

--well roads in San Diego- the merge can be left OR right.   i hate being in the wrong lane.   your country must get a fair number of US, CA visitors- as we drive on the right. so  we might have to be reminded. i dont know how well your roads are designed.  the Interstate system here- for the most part must meet certain standards... for instance- there must be a certain amount of miles of staright level road so an airplannce can land.

But to your point- i feel that way almost every time i purchse something. i misunderstood the sale- coupon, the tag. im always the jerk.

The signs are invariably there becasue at some point, some time... someone did the wrong thing and caused a major disaster. Thats up there with the tag on the hair dryer not to use it in the shower, or the notification that yoru to go coffee MIGHT BE HOT
They all full under the "No Shit Sherlock" rule for most of us, but somewhere there was someone who needed a sign like that.

The roads are designed fairly well - turn offs and ons are curved for the purposes of driving on the left. Junctions are marked again according to driving on the left. At roundabouts, it would require an awkward turn to get off the island and onto the wrong side of the motorway.

And in any case, the roads are so packed 24/7 it would be obvious that driving on the left is the norm, unless youre of such an independent mind that youre convinced 30 million others are wrong and youre right!

Mind you, there can be problems. Like the idiot who was driving in Dunkerque (France), lost her way and decided to turn into a residential street and retrace her steps. She did a wonderful three point turn and drove back to the main road. Halfway up the street this French car was coming towards her with a French guy waving his hands (very demonstrative, the French). Only then did said idiot realise she was driving on the left.......

the most inane things make me chortle .... I was snickering so hard after reading a sign off of the highway that I had to pull of the road! The sign said "nails while you wait" It had suddenly occurred to me that there was no possible way I could think of to avoid getting your nails done, without sitting there and waiting whilst they did it...

Or better yet, the tag on my blow dryer reminds me not to operate it while bathing, sleeping or  with the safety cover removed... Well hell, If I am sleeping I can't promise I wont take the thing apart, hop into the bath and crank the sucker on! I mean, at that point I will not be stopping to read the labels!

A neon sign in a psychics window said,"I specialize in Everything." That really cracked me up.

There was one in NY that was Tattoos while you wait.
Which, I learned later, meant they DESIGNED it while you waited, then obviously you needed to be in attendance while you were tattood. But It was funny as all hell.

There was also a maintenence station that had a sign saying "Emergency Lube, available all night"

Remember, any time you build something that's idiot proof, people build better idiots.

We normally have right hand entrances and exits here, but there are enough on the left that need signs up. I get really pissed off when they don't mark them and you're three lanes over expecting a right hand exit.

But isn't the whole purpose of government to take care of those who can't do anything for themselves, Stella?

This one makes a bit of sense to me.  I've never been there, but could I safely guess that up to that point a driver has been able to very easily just go with the flow of traffic?  A last little reminder isn't going to hurt before foreign drivers really go out on their own.

The day after I got home from Japan, I found myself in the left lane of a one-way arterial.  At a red light, I stopped, looked right, and started to just whip it right into oncoming traffic.  Habit.

My favourite is on the cotton buds box - do not use in the ear.

I mean, theyre shaped that way and sold on the premise that one needs something to clean out one's ears, if one isnt as common as I.

On that subject, if one isnt meant to do so, why is the small finger exactly the right size to fit into the ear and the nose?

I understand that the government is to watch out for us.

But I feel sometimes it goes too far. I remember the public safety warnings of the Warsaw local authorities about terrorism and gems such as 'REMEMBER BOMBS CAN BE VERY EXPLOSIVE' and 'ALWAYS REPORT STRANGE PEOPLE TO THE POLICE' (this one vanished very quickly for some reason).

It's like when you applied for a Polish temporary resident's card and the police had to come round and ask you if you were a criminal.

The Americans ask similar questions, 'Do you intend to engage in criminal activities whilst in the US?' and 'Do you intend to engage in terrorist activities?'

I felt like answering 'Not sure' just to see how they'd react.
