Since this post has by and large not been taken in the spirit it was intended, I am withdrawing from the dialogue.  While I grant that it started because I was put off by certain nicks, my thought was to provide some useful ideas on how to make a nick work for folks instead of putting people off (after all most folks here are trying to meet people), it obviously is not being taken that way and I cannot change what people are choosing to read into it.

Just stop and think a bit longer ok? For whatever reason, people will choose a nickname based upon their own thoughts ok. Myself included, get a mite ticked when someone posts in a manner which insinuates a generalization that we (collectively) aren't capable of choosing an appropriate user name. I took it as being presumptuous to make a sweeping generalization which is highly inaccurate.

I suppose that is because you do not recognize it as the title of a song, which happens to be my favorite Jazz song.  I also love to learn, and I am willing to do so.  This is not just about BDSM, but all things.  I do understand though how without the back story someone could read it wrong.

And how do you know you are not doing the same thing!!!

Many would read your name and think  your asking  fuck me tonight---why on earth would any one on a site such  this,  suspect it is a jazz  song title ????  if on a jazz music site ...then yes  people would likely understand it's meaning ...  maybe you need to add another rule

---Make the name appropriate for the type of site you are on , so that it is not misinterpreted as to have another meaning

Where the concept is flawed, I believe, is that someone would have already had to have chosen a nick to read the post in the first place.

seriously who are you to tell us how we should go about considering nicknames for a public forum like this?  who put you in charge of approving/disapproving screennames? you offered your opinions/advice and so did the rest of us - granted not all of us agreed with you. are we suppose to?  the names we choose were created by our own choice and i'm sad to say without your assistance.

So... this is not about one true way... it is about some tips.  Take them or leave them, I don't really care.

Since you asked... TeachMeTonight is the title of my favorite song and reflects my love of learning.

Is it a slow song by any chance?

I'm stella but you can call me matildathinksshesabitofalezzie

I first joined the site when I was living in Poland back in 2005.

My original nick or screen name was brzytrzywzgrobina.

This might be a bit of as mouthful for anyone here but it just rolled off the tongues of the Poles.

It's nothing fancy like the title of a song or anything, just the first word my first Polish Mistress uttered when she saw the size of my underwear.

If you think our screen names are bad, have you browsed some of the Chinese profiles? They allow spaces as they all speak in syllables.

No Ma King - this is a married male sub who doesn't want his wife to know.

Suk Yu Dik - Shangai female submissive, very popular with male Doms.

Shitzong Mi - a Taiwanese male toilet slave.

Cho Kon It - Chinese Master, bit of an uber Dom

Wan Hung Lo - a Chinese sissy maid

Ram Dill Do - not sure, I think his profile was written in Thai. Might be Korean.

Oh I forgot to answer the question in the OP.

What's in a nick?

Quite a lot of prisoners, some screws, lots of cells, maybe a few policemen, barbed wire, high walls.

Now Now TMT----what you put forth is very noble and as we have seen time and again, many seek the old threads to get wisdom, so by your very words--you have taught a lesson--do not fault us for having some fun---I mean cmon ron doesnt have a serious boner in his body---however, My Dear, people are arrogantly people--and will always think to have that one name that the world falls for---and only those who are music wise or who ask you, will get yours--won't they?

We get what you are saying, however its like preaching to the masses in Perfume after they smelled the ideal scent---first the debacle then the realism--smiles.

The beauty of a totally open naming convention is that people say quite a bit about themselves, sometimes inadvertently.

I would much rather have it be the case that people are allowed to choose totally asinine names for themselves and I can quickly eliminate them from my "worth dealing with" list after a cursory further review than to have to spend much more time reading through "name that was forced on person number 12's" profile or posts in order to realize that they are, in fact, a sub-human neanderthalic twit.

Anything that provides me with a full picture of who someone is contains value; making people name themselves in some particular way isn't going to change who they are, so I'd rather know what they really think and be able to make better informed decisions.

Also, I am annoyed by any nick with vowels in it, along with all those that use more than one consonant.

Ahem.

OP, I am sure you will be back to read more of this thread since you seem to be a bit of a masochist.

Perhaps, since you stepped on your dick so badly here, you will be changing your own nick soon. May I suggest, "IhaveaPointbutaGoodHatwillCoverit" ? Or "SteppedonmyDickneeda NewNickquick"?

You have provided the crowd with a lot of laughs, though, and for that, I thank you.

if we are to be "PC" about monikers, then might we not get persnickitty about shortening words with unapproved abreviations - ie. nick , instead of nickname.
one persons time saver might be anothers irritant.

Look, I think natural selection is a great thing.  So just leave them to their "I'm speshalllll" type of nicknames.  Sheesh.

I was just thinking the same thing and then if they decided to change their nic they would be breaking another rule.

I'm sure mine breaks some rules but i'm not changing it.

Well, my nick apparently breaks at least one of the rules in the OP, but MasterK gave it to me, and I use it proudly.
His opinion means much more to me than a random person from the message boards.

Greetings,
I sort of wish I could change mine. I'd like to use the same nick everywhere, to avoid confusion. Still, mine does say something about who I am and what interests me.

ps77....cuz 77 is better than 69.

Pagansub77, I just want to tell you that when I first glanced at your pic I thought there was something coming out of the top of your head. Like a weird pointy hat. Took me a moment to realize it was the door behind you.
