For someone who was raised in the civil rights area in the deep south, I have little patience for any racial hatred.  This artcle quoted had racial intent.
I think it is unfair how the Hispanic Community is being treated, and they do not deserve this.
We all need to reevaluate our feelings in this regard.

Regards, MissSCD
... problem being, Hispanic isn't a race...we come in many colors.  Hispanic meaning Spanish-speaking is a different issue.
i grew up in a multi-cultural family(thank God) my Native-American family...only a few older ones on the reservation still know any Algonquin...and that's a shame.  My Puerto-Rican family (which covers the color spectrum from black to white)...as kids, some of us were taught English only...and as a result, i speak Spanglish today, that's a shame...and yet we all speak English well.  It's expected in this country to be a part of the greater society.  i have no problem saying one should speak English in this country.  But the fear and loathing exhibited towards people of other cultures...primarily the Mexicans...most of whom are descendants of the Natives...and therefore here, on this continent FIRST...lest we forget, is so petty.  People...are  you SCARED of the Spanish language...WTF?  Why should it bother you so much that people speak Spanish in Texas or should i say Tejas?  Historically the states bordering Mexico were in fact inhabited by...gasp!!! frickin' MEXICANS...go figure.  So there is a large Mexican presence felt there...simple solution...if Texas is getting too Spanish friendly...move.  i grew up in NY.  Italian kids learn Italian at home...Jewish kids learn Yiddish, at home...Greek kids...(see where this is going???)  One of the things about this country that has been a blessing and a curse, is the fact that many people from many places live amongst other people from ohter places.  The melting pot idea...don't like it...move.  But before you do, and this isn't directed towards any one person...but to anyone with an idealized picture of what it means to be "American"...if you leave here and go nearly anywhere else in the free world...be prepared to meet with racial, and cultural tolerance even more disgusting than what we have here.  i'm sure the thought of all those PC countries kinda made you puke just a little bit in your mouths...

Some people are veering away from the melting pot towards the idea of a salad mix.

I like the idea of the American salad: it's not homogeneised like a pot. It's many different tidbits sharing one big dish. I think it's a nicer way to approach it.

America's strength is the diversity of its people: time to embrace it, and to stop obsessing over "race" (something I find particularly shocking, considering the millenium we're in).

camille65 -> RE: Learn english or go to jail (3/29/2008 6:36:11 AM)

As a kid I was always jealous of those that 'got to learn another language at home'. I thought it was totally cool to be able to speak English and something else and I wished I had (at the time what I thought of as) foreign grandparents with an even cooler foreign history. As an adult I pretty much feel the same way, it is a bit embarrassing that most Americans can't speak anything but English. We are way behind the curve on that one. I admire anyone able to move to a country and learn even the most rudimentary bits of that language. Too, I understand the frustration of suddenly having to be able to speak Spanish in America (probably because I forgot nearly all of my 7th grade Spanish class).

Fancy learning French :-) ?

camille65 -> RE: Learn english or go to jail (3/29/2008 6:42:12 AM)

It hurts my jaw for some reason. A lot of different types of spoken languages do that, makes me so glad that I can type or text when I needta!

I can't do those 'other' things.[:(]So I'm staying with my few phrases of Mandarin, my couple of Spanish words and the rest remains English!

lronitulstahp -> RE: Learn english or go to jail (3/29/2008 6:50:26 AM)

i have my moments....it just occured to me, you never hear Canadians freaking out about French being spoken in the same way Americans freak out about Spanish...hmmm....

kittinSol -> RE: Learn english or go to jail (3/29/2008 6:53:31 AM)

In Quebec it's the other way around, isn't it? The tiny Gallic minority terrified of being overtaken by the great big badass English-speaking majority...

People are just scared of one another: shame xenophobia isn't a commodity, I'd be rolling in it by now.

Here, here, my sister went to Iran and was married there; she did just that learnt  the language and customs and got on with it. She earnt so much respect and admeration she was able to work and exsperience the culture on equal terms. Her husband who came to england and is still here did just the same. Shame all can't be like that they miss out on so much.

The problem with your analogy is that when people order a salad, they can easily "pick out" what they don't like or order the salad without those parts.

Here we go again bringing up the native americans. So I'll re-post my view on that from another thread (again)

"This is an increasingly ridiculous argument to use in this debate. We (european settlers) came here, we fought with the natives, we made deals with the natives, we fucked over some of them (manhattan for a handful of beads........"how"). Regardless, of how we obtained it, we took ownership of this country. We didn't "sneak in" and try and assimilate into native american society, we brought our own. Right or wrong, that's what happened. We didn't sneak in here and live on the native american govenerment's dime while demanding we had a right to be here because we snuck in. We came in and took it, bought it, stole it, whatever. The "maybe you should go home unless you're native american" argument is ridiculous. This is our country. The settlers may have gotten it in a fucked up manner.....go complain to them. I had nothing to do with it. My ancestors came over in the 30's (I think) and came through Ellis island like the rest, with papers. My great-grand parents were full-blooded german and came here and made lives for their familes, many of whom enlisted in the US military and fought against their parents' former countrymen."

Now then, having re-posted that. I will ask you, lronitulstahp, a question or two. The Spanish came over to Mexico much like the Europeans did to America. What makes that situation any different? Why don't the descendants of the Myans, Aztecs, etc dislike the spanish? Why did they 'get busy' with them instead? And how do you feel that the descendants of a long ago time have any more right to be in Texas or any border states than the Americans. The Texans won the Texas Revolution, not the other way around. Your argument about who "used to" be here is irrelevant. That'd be like saying the US should freely allow Europeans to illegal enter this country since we were once an English colony. There is zero sense in that.

The US won the American Revolution, so England no longer has a claim on us. The Texans won the Texas Revolution, and later joined the US, who then won the Mexican-American war - so Mexico no longer has a claim on this state/region. We won, they lost, deal with it. Unless you can get a time machine and go back to that period and change the results, fact is fact. Texans won their independance from Mexico and became a state which joined the rest of the US. That is fact and it's not going to change. Who was "here first" is irrelevant. The world continues to turn and times change and things change.

On top of the "we won, you lost" argument, here's another little tidbit.....Mexico GAVE us California and the rest of the southwestern region . We didn't TAKE IT, it was given under a treaty. So, with THAT information, your argument holds even less validity, unless of course you're trying to say it's "ok" for present-day mexicans to try and take back what their ancestors gave so long ago.

Actually, I don't eat salad at all. But I've seen friends who do enjoy salad frequently pick out or have the place keep out what they don't want.

The melting pot analogy works better because once a dish is all melted together, you can't separate it. Salads are very easy to separate (segregate).
