(chuckles) I have relatives in the Mid-West and South that nearly require a translator for me to understand them. Of course they think I have a "California accent". when my family came over on the boat it was learn english or starve. they took to this country like ducks to water, even refusing to teach the next generation any of our "native" tongue. we were in America, we were Americans. end of discussion as far as they were concerned. not sure if we've become more liberal or more lazy as a society. PM

PM I've had more then a couple of friends whose immigrant families shared this mindset. That is the key difference between an immigrant and the illegal aliens that are causing today's problems. Immigrants come to America to BE an American. They come here for the whole package, the language, the life, everything. The illegal alien does not. They come here and make what they can and send it "home" to "their real country" so that their families there can live better. They have no interest in assimilating into our society or being an American. I say encourage immigration......boot out the fucking illegals. I'd wager a nice, 100-foot-high electric fence would come in handy. Maybe some motion-activated, automatic sentry guns as well.

I support learning whatever language strikes your fancy but I consider it an open slap in the face of America when someone refuses to teach or learn english and still expects to get by. Tell me something, since you appear quite indignant about the mexican race, despite your claim of being born 'here,' .....if I picked a rural neighborhood at random in mexico and went there.....how many people would be speaking to me in english? I ask because here there are groups who consider it a crying shame that a school can't teach a hispanic child in spanish. How many places in mexico would cater to me if I didn't speak english? (And you can't name resort towns like Cancun and Cozamel.....that's too easy)

You see, both my parents have german last names, but my mom once explained my 'lineage' to me. Unfortunately she and my dad can't seem to agree, nor does either of them seem to know every single one. To my best information, though I am predominantly german, it's also been said I'm a bit irish, welsh, french and a few others.....there's even a rumor about a lil indian in there somewhere, though I don't know if it's "feather" or "dot," so I can't exactly use it in the whole "native american" argument.

I tried once to use one of those lineage sites to track my ancestors....it must not have been a very good one though since it didn't tell me much. But then the net was still young then. I forget what comedian it was... but he suggested that the best way to combat illegals entering the country was to build a huge-ass brick wall across the border... and then build a second one with a sign on it that says "Wall 2 of 45." The theory was that after jumping the wall they'd be disheartened to see a second wall and figure that any country crazy enough to build two walls probably WOULD build the other 45. My family's new to the U.S. but as far as I know we're all legal. Then again, my father's side is of a somewhat dubious nature, so who the Hell knows.

Knowing more than one language is better mentally and makes you more hirable! BTW, her post never said she refused to learn it or that her parents refused to teach it. Just that she didn't learn it first. I had a friend who spoke German before speaking English simply because she heard it more as a toddler, but no one was refusing to teach her English. She was quite fluent in English as a young child.

It all goes back to what I said about the other "immigrants" that come here wishing to BE American. Americans speak english, or at least an Americanized version of it (so there's no hair-splitting). Teaching another language first is, to me, disrespectful and sounds more like something an illegal alien would do rather than someone wishing to assimilate and become an American.

(And you can't name resort towns like Cancun and Cozamel.....that's too easy) "a slap in the face of America" what are you smoking? you do realize dont you that this entire continent is "America"? and i do have a clue as to your race, your profile states caucasian. do i seem somehow to not have a grasp of the english language? i honestly have only ever been to puerto valarta, but i can guess that if you did decide to visit a smaller town, the people there would at least be polite to you, wether or not you spoke spanish. the true shame is poeple who dont have a homeland and use being American to back up their bigotry. do you realise how stupid people sound when they call themselves American? if you say that in Mexico, the Mexican youre talking to will say, "so am I".
