For my friends and I, immigration and all isn't about race. It's about laws and doing things right. That's why my friends know I'm not a bigot or a racist. We have differing views on some things, but they know where I stand and respect my views as I do theirs.

At the close of this I will say one thing. Most bills being passed here about "illegial aliens" and such.....they clearly say "illegal aliens" in the bills' text. Yet the largest and most vocal group I see whining about being called criminals are the hispanics. Do hispanics really think they are the only ones seeking a 'better life' in this country? How presumptuous.

Now that I agree with. I don't like people living here who aren't paying taxes (if they are paying every tax I would, then I really don't care much) but the cold fact is that America does not have an offical language that anyone is required to learn. If this is about laws, than how is learning any other language first disrespectful to a country that won't even pick a language?

Paranoid much? Not to mention your point is easily used against you. If they are trying to take over, if it doesn't matter how we got it (and lying is pretty sneaky), it doesn't matter how they are planning to do it.

Plus, this country doesn't even have an offical language!

Actually that response makes my point for me. If they *are* trying to "take it back," then we have every right to defend it however we see fit. As a matter of fact, speaking of defense, I've seen an alarming increase in frequency of news stories from bordertowns about people on our side being shot at, attacked, etc. Sounds like a war is brewing to me. Those border patrol guys aren't going to take that kind of crap forever.

I was thinking Indian from India. Athough, now that I think about it, I haven't had "offical" Native American foods - just what has made it into "American" food. Like popcorn!

You haven't? No corn? No tortillas? No squash? No roast potatoes? No raw tomatoes? No hot chocalate?

I think it far more likely you have no idea what foods the native americans had.

This isn't about taking it back or defending. This is about you getting pissed because someone taught their baby the language they are fluent in first.

Please notice I said like popcorn. I didn't feel like typing every food out. BTW, I don't regard chocolate as Native American that much as (I believe) it first came from Central South America. I believe it was the Mayans, though it could have been the Aztecs as well.

Ahhhh common ground. Now that's progress.

To address  your respect question:
If we don't have an official language, we certainly don't have 2. Yet most schools around here, as young as grade school, are requiring.....REQUIRING students to learn spanish too. When I was in school, in high school, we could choose whatever language we wanted to learn as our foreign language course or as an elective course. I knew people that took french, some who took german....and some who took spanish (and others).

Now we're REQUIRING our kids to learn spanish? On what authority? Who decided that was to be our "official, unofficial" second language? What about the french, the italians, the greeks, the germans, etc? Why are we not required to learn french instead? Or greek?

THAT is my problem with it.

AquaticSub -> RE: Learn english or go to jail (3/27/2008 9:47:44 PM)

I just tried to crack a joke... *sniffle* Cause ya know... most people don't think about popcorn as a Native American food. At least not that I know of.

And why are they not yet fluent in english? Therein lies the problem with the whole thing. Why not teach both at once? Because they didn't know both, I presume.

AquaticSub -> RE: Learn english or go to jail (3/27/2008 9:50:22 PM)

It doesn't what they are requiring them to learn because America has not decided what our language is. The schools will teach them what they think they need to know. Until America picks a language, there is no ground to stand on saying that learning another is disrespectful.

You're misinformed. Here, in the border states, the school districts are requiring it.

Ever have a Navajo Taco? Well, that's not a fair example, that's hybrid. I have "Native American Cooking: Foods of the Southwest Indian nations" by Lois Ellen Frank;  and "Cocina Prehispanica" (Mexico)(Spanish & English) by Ana M, de Benitez

I'll take the native TY.

Apprently that isn't good enough for you either - it sure pisses you off when the schools do it.

Most people who speak two languages are more comfortable in one than the other. The child will almost certainly pick up the one the parent is more comfortable in first. There is no law, and you claim is this about laws for you, requiring a person, parent or otherwise, to be fluent. There isn't even a law saying you must manage in English. If this is about laws, you must change your stance or admit that this isn't about laws.

You didn't read correctly. I never said that the schools weren't requiring it. I said it doesn't matter because the United States has decided that we don't have an offical language and it doesn't matter what language you speak.

um, Domah said she did not learn English as a first language, but she was in no way deprived or denied the chance to leanr English.. and frankly, she's quite fluent, TYVM.

Incans actually but I'm a little unclear you're excluding the native americans who are from south of the US? Are you aware that what evidence we have indicates a thriving trade between the larger nations was going on before the spaniards and smallpox arrived? I'm not sure if we can say for sure if chocolate ever made it to the Iriquois since the Incans viewed it as for royalty only but Corn, potatoes and tomatoes all orginate and were first cultivated in central Mexico and only later spread into what is now the US almost certainly by way of trade.

They've tried to pass laws making english the official language. Funny thing though. Everytime they try, they get called racist. Funny how requiring students to learn spanish above other foreign languages isn't racist, yet naming english the country's official language is.

Odd that.

Just for the reference, the post that started this little lecture was meant to be a joke. At least Domah got it.

For seriousness, when I think "Native American" I think of the tribes that are inside the borders of North America. When it comes to the tribes of Central and South America, I don't think of them as Native Americans, I think of them as Aztecs, Mayans, Incans, etc. Granted I have trouble remembering what name goes to what customs and culture but that is a LD thing. If that excludes or offends, it's not meant to and oh well.
