dollparts85 -> Should I have my wisdom teeth taken out? (3/29/2008 1:37:08 PM)

I have been having jaw pain for a few weeks now...but my dentist said that it shouldn't be my wisdom teeth b/c I had the teeth infront of them pulled. One is more impacted than the other one though. He said I could have them taken out if I want to though...but...I don't know. I'm kinda a baby when it comes to pain LOL that kind of pain at least [;)] I told him no...that I didn't want to...but I'm going back Wednesday for x rays and I could change my mind...and have them taken out...how long does it hurt after they are pulled? Is it hard to eat?

Even though they may not be pressing on other teeth and causing pain that way, debris can still accumulate around them in the gums and cause infection and pain.

He'll give you a shot to numb you, then pull them out. You'll go home, take some tylenol, and it won't hurt. He will give you a paper that tells you how to take care of your mouth after the extraction.  It is very important that you follow YOUR DENTIST'S aftercare instructions, and not someone else's.  Generally this will include NOT rinsing your mouth for 24 hours, no smoking, no drinking thru a straw, and normal food and drink.  If you don't feel like eating, you need to keep your fluid intake up so you don't get dehydrated.

They had to break my jaw to get one of mine out.

Thankfully I wasn't concious for it.

My dentist never gave me any aftercare instructions when he pulled my other teeth...hmm...

My experience with dental work is that the more major the procedure is the less it hurts. When I had my wisdom teeth out, I was given some kind of happy IV, I was conscious, but sat there wondering when they were going to start, and it was all done:) And I think I only needed a day of painkillers afterwards, and I was fine. For me, getting a filling is more stressful than having wisdom teeth out.

LOL I have a small cavity in my one wisdom tooth...so if I don't get them pulled, I'm gonna have to have it filled...

Pain and length to heal are all subjective and cannot be predicted---Today they have marvelous things that aid om the removal and if you do as your instructed you should do well---

My UM is 18, she has all 4, one is impacted, 3 are not, however as we age, our jaws age, bone decreases, we grind and grit our teeth---I worry about potential TMJ--which can cause ear pain, migraines etc--so while they go in to remove the bad one, I am getting all 4 removed--then she doesn't have to worry about it later.

Just one opinion.

WE have a young friend that got an infection in one wisdom tooth and set up a heart problem. She had them removed and is doing very well.I would suggest if they aren't causing a problem leave them be but at the first sign of a potential problem OUT with them...bounty

YourhandMyAss -> RE: Should I have my wisdom teeth taken out? (3/29/2008 1:58:43 PM)

Of course it's hard to eat. They cut your gums open to take out the teeth if they haven't broken the surface yet and if they have it leaves gaping holes I asssume mine had to be cut out. Any one who didn't find it painful to eat after that owuld have my award for super human tolerance levels lol.
