ORIGINAL: LadyEllen Its reminiscent of the push towards bio-fuels. Seemed like a great idea - except now there is no much land given over to growing bio-fuels that there isnt enough food to go round and prices are shooting up, affecting the poorest most of all. What I cant for the life of me fathom though, is how no one thinks these things through - they seem to spend a lot of time and energy on thinking of ways to solve one problem, without considering what other problem might thereby be occasioned. These arent stupid people, which is why I find it so surprising. Cynics might conclude that they dont mention problematic effects for some other reason. E Lack of food is a scam to you know, I live in Southern Illinois, smack in the middle of what has to be one if not the most fertile growing area on the face of the planet, and we have land just not producing anything all over the place, this area could easily increase its production of food. at least enough to feed another country or two. No doubt. I don't understand it. It seems the system doesn't want everyone to be able to afford everything or else the profit margin goes down and therefore our valued class based existence becomes less meaningful . So, profits are more important than human life, what's new. Anyway, we have a field next to here we own, that could feed probably 10 families year round, just sits there empty, and gets mowed, it's nice thick fertile soil(I know because I had to bury a pipe in it). I don't grow anything in it because I don't have time to compared to the cost of buying it, but if food prices keep rising people are going to see rows of corn, green beans and whatever else over there,LOL. Probably think I'm nuts. If you want to grow food you can grow it yourself to, even if you're urban, hydroponics is pretty basic stuff, and you can grow food year round. Just type in hydroponics in a search engine, everything you need can be bought at your local Wal-Mart equivalent for cheap.
