Obama did not seek Miss Fonda's endorsement, if simply saying who she plans to vote for is an endorsement.

McCain did seek the endorsement of nutjob hatemongers Hagee and Parsley. Now why don't the right wingers actually deal with the scum their candidate is associating himself with rather than trying this bullshit game of tryiing to hang various unpleasant people around Obama's neck? Is it perhaps because they know their only chance to win is to pander to bigots and they're hoping the rest of us won't notice?

Yes.

No one's going to vote for McCain, just against whatever the Dems put on offer.

I think a vote for McCain will be good for the future of this area of the world. After a while I am not sure it will be called the U.S. any longer. McCain will just be the last nail in the coffin.

But the Dems aren't really offering a compelling alternative anyway. Where's our universal healthcare and anti-war candidate? Oh right...there isn't one.

Problem with that theory is that an awful lot of those bigots are the Democrat's blue-collar base.  And a lot of them despise Hanio/Jihad Jane on top of that.

Do you ever have anything positive to say about this country?

If the US is such an irredeemable mess, why are you even here?

By all means, let's talk about the problems we have....there are quite a few of them, after all. But try arguing solutions instead of just pissing about how bad things are.

Well, before Nixon I felt slightly more positive. Then Watergate began interrupting afternoon cartoons and I became bitter. And after seeing all of the bullshit-shakes that Americans will suck up with a straw and ask for seconds I feel more cynical about it all. Indeed!

When I consider the average intelligence of the electorate I feel even more cynical. I do believe that Americans get the government they deserve. The fact that many will actually vote for McCain says it all. The fact that every candidate going is just more of the same says something too.

But see, the difference is I am annoyed by McCain right now, before he becomes prez. Y'all will vote him in and then immediately back-peddle as if you hadn't voted him in. You will complain about how he's not really a conservative or Republican. The usual drivel. I can sense the drivel from here...in back time.

The appalling corporatism in the U.S. is simply outrageous. And some of you laughably talk about free markets. It's literally insane and no free thinker can take an American at face value politically. What you will believe is astounding.

Consider the various political follies of the last 30-40 years and then please do tell me you feel like an idiot. Because if you can't then I still don't get the reason for the overweening pride. Nothing will have changed and that makes almost all of us willing accomplices. And some of you even worse than that.

So Americans are just stupid. Lovely sentiment, that. Totally wrong, of course--Americans are neither more nor less intelligent than the rest of humanity.

This is drivel. People will complain about McCain just like people complain about Bush just like people complained about Clinton. That's part of the process.

Overweening pride? What's wrong with being proud of what we are....Americans? What's wrong with wanting to improve that which we are?

Hang your head in shame if you like. That is your choice. My choice is not only to not join you but to encourage everyone to leave you standing in your corner of shame very much alone.

Explain to me why I am supposed to feel "pride" due to random chance selecting my birthplace.

Well, ya know... it's like Johnny said, "Whatever gets ya through the night - is all right, is all right."

I gave you your 15 minutes of fame in my journal. (not really, just mentioned ya)

You betcha. I'm not too wordy, am I? I used to be brief, concise, pithy even. Now, not so much.

My conviction that chocolate really is an inadequate substitute for affection/love is solidifying. But it's helpful.

And interestingly, I find you one of the most blithely ignorant posters on the boards.
The rush of air over your head was both my point and your misunderstanding me completely.

Shame? Hardly.

I point my finger and laugh.

Pride is essential to hope.. Pride is the prerequisite to progress. If we don't take pride in who we are, if we don't take pride in where we choose to live--and you do choose to live here--what would motivate us to improve?

Before we can make things better, we first must believe we deserve better. That belief requires pride--regardless of where random chance brought you into this world.
