Oh boy!
I get to "drink the coolade" today.
A whole gallon of it starting at 2 pm to 6pm.
Then, take some pills and drink a bottle of magnesium citrate.
Then wake up at 0400 tommorow and pickup a neighbor and leave here at 0500 for Charleston V.A. Hospital to "take the pipe."
I'm glad they're going to sedate me for the procedure.
They say that it can be "uncomfortable" without sedation.
That's why someone else has to be with me, they won't give you sedation unless someone else is there with you and signs a form that they'll be driving you home.
Anyone else in here had this done lately?

Angel has had this done every 6 months since I have had him. Every time, its uncomfortable afterwards for about a day, but nothing major. The worse part, he says, is the taste of the citrate stuff, put it in sprite and its far more bearable. Also, clean out the back seat of your car, since sometimes the sedation makes it rough to sit up on the way home if its a long drive, without getting dizzy on your trip. Making sure you have a way to lay down in the back is a good idea. And have some apple juice ready in the car, itll help afterwards.
I think that was all the prep I needed to have him spell out when there was the possibility I needed to take him last time.

Hi popeye

I've had many sad but so... The procedure is easy...no pain... you will not remember anything about it... in fact they will talk to you after the procedure...and you will not remember that either..lol.. Be sure to tell your friend to pay attention so they can fill you in later.

Here is some more advice...practical anyway... start a 12 instead of 2... you can go slower and it is easier on your system. You will get sore with all the stomach acid during the cleaning process so use something like petroleum jelly to protect the skin.

They will take you in... wrap you in nice warm blankets.... put an IV in.... ask if you have problems with anesthesia.... tell you it is OK to pass gas...and that the doctor will talk with you after the procedure... and not to get excited if they take a few snips ... they often do.

My last one was five years ago almost!
The Dr. said I'd be good to go for 5 years.

Simply and seriously, good luck with that. the prep day is more uncomfortable than the procedure or post (in my experince at least). Be ready to get something to gentle to eat and drink after you are awake for a bit.
i slept through the procedure, and about a half a day afterwards, but woke up long enough to get home. Lots of luck and good wishes.

I never had one.I heard a report on NPR- it sounded like an elephant dieing. The DR wanted me to get one,I declined.

Ppl should do a colon cleanse 2-3x a year.

Most are full of gunk- due to processed foods.

Nature had not intended us to eat- what amounts to as plastic.
Natural food rots....

I never thought I would have mild prostrate ailments. But then I treated my body like it was a casino.

--happily- you get valium. :-)

enjoy the valium. best of luck on the process.   [hope they do the correct proceedure too]

one visit to the ER i wasnt allowed to drive on 5 mg of valium. at the time i could chug enough to choke a horse. One time for pain, I told them I had a ride. I did not. Mr policeman wrote me a pricey ticket.   So I learned my lesson.

PaHunk, yeah, I suppose it doesn't hurt to do a colon cleanse a couple of times a year but when they're doing a colonoscopy they're looking for pre-cancerous polyps and if they find any they cut them out.
You really should think about having one done just for your own peace of mind!
Odds are they'll find nothing and you'll be good for another 4 or 5 years.
Hey, as a gay male you might even luck out and get a cute intern!
Now wouldn't having a cute Dr. putting something up your ass be a bonus as well as finding out that you have a good bill of health?

Unfortunately in his case, it was every 6 months becasue they consistantly found stuff that should not have been there for a few. Thankfully they were all benign, but better to find them and not have to worry since he DOES have history. After this last one (thank goodness) they said he was good for about 3 years becasue he came back without any new developments for 2 in a row. He's had a history since he was about 13, so its nothing new for us, but it doesnt get more pleasant. Or, mind you, less worrisome.

Understood. At the moment I am going thru a phaze of aversion per the medical system [among other "systems"] Maybe when I turn 50.

My grandmother seldom goes to drs, and she is fine. Then there is the "experiment" with litiptor on me. That AFTER neueonton, celebrex, and a 3rd pill.

Throw in Monsanto, process food, ecoli, the resistance to labeling... and the general disregard of "informed" public, and right now, my attitude is I tried it "their way" now think I will try in my way.

As I say, it is a phaze.

My mother had this done a few weeks, Popeye. It can be uncomfortable, but not painful and my mother wasn't given a generation anaesthetic, she remained conscious but doped up throughout hers. She had hers done b/c she'd had problems with her bowels for some time, then began bleeding unexpectedly and after visitng a specialist it was decided she should have this procedure. It was a precautionary procedure b/c she'd once had bowel cancer and they wanted to make sure there wasn't a recurrence. As you said, it's an inconvenient 'pain in the arse', so to speak, just figuratively

and it's good that your docs are keeping an eye on you and that this seems a routine procedure for you.

The result for my mother. Nothing worse than haemorrhoids that were taken care of during the procedure, no cancerous cells or polyps.

My dad said that, "maybe at 50 the drs. can go at it with the roto-rooter" that had me in stitches.

Then, 50 came and went. A few more years go by. "Maybe next year"

Then 60. No colonoscopy in sight.

Okay, okay 61. Colonoscopy. They found polyps. Turned out to be cancer. It had already spread to a few lymph nodes. The surgery was successful, the chemo didn't have any adverse side-effects, other than he couldn't drink or eat anything hot or cold. Everything had to be room temperature, otherwise it would bother him. Raditation knocked an otherwise strapping, 6'3" big-ass Indian on his ass. He was in remission for 2 years.

Then, there was the follow up CT scan, the cancer had returned, and spread into the liver and more lymph nodes. Surgery is not an option. After 4 months of more chemo, another CT scan revealed that the cancer had "grown slightly". The chemo didn't shrink it, just slowed the growth. Slightly. The oncologist told my dad "enjoy your summer".

Now, I am not one to dwell on the "what ifs" however I am a firm advocate of prompt screenings, if there is family history, then all the more reason to be proactive and not wait until the magic age to come up before you get the roto-rooter, or get your boobies smashed in a vise, or any of the other unpleasant, but necessary screens that may very well catch something before it kills you.

MissMorrigan, I've had diverticulosis three times in the last year so they wanted to check me out.
I think it was those small black seeds in bananas so I haven't had any bananas since and diverticulosis.
Yes, your mother was lucky that it was "only" hemmroids.

Yes, I had two in two years. I had colon surgery in 2006, so I'm pretty well versed in the topic. During prep (night before the procedure) wear your oldest underwear or get some depends because you'll be tossing them out. For the proedure they give you twilight sleep, you don't remember anything. You may be a bit drowsy and gasey after the test and into the following day but that should be the extent of any discomfort.
