MaamJay -> RE: I am Not Selling My Pink Flamingos! (4/21/2008 6:47:46 PM)

Camille, I also know how you are feeling, it was so very hard to leave My 5 acres in Feb 07. I had a special bond with that place, with that house, with that land, and I shed tears driving away. When I went back for a visit pre-Christmas, I stayed with My friend on the same street, and shed tears again going past. But I also know that short of a VERY big lottery win (and since I don't buy tickets that's not likely) I could never afford to buy it again, it is gone. I love the area where Master and I now live, and it feels like home in general, but I don't have the same pull to this 1/2 acre and this house as I did to the previous one. However, that said, life is so much less stressful without the ex and that is a blessing. Now if We could just get a better income stream flowing ... I could be content! I've known you from old ... and I do feel you are making the right move, hard though it will be. Take your recordings and your photos, listen and look and smile ... then snuggle into His arms and all will be well.

Big hugggsss
Maam Jay aka violet[A]

Edited to add My very best wishes to all the other relocators!!

All this talk of flamingoes reminds me of The Great Flamingo Caper of 1988 (I'm fuzzy on the year, but I think that was it).  Some friends had a flamingo in their front yard, ONLY because it pissed off the neighbors.  Other than that item, their yard was worthy of a magazine spread.

When the woman's birthday rolled around, we "kidnapped" the flamingo and took polaroids of it in various situations.  She got the first picture of the flamingo with a blindfold on, holding a ransom note that said, "Mommy help me!".  We dropped off pics and ransom notes at various times over a week or so.  We had to let her husband in on it, because we needed his help.  On a Saturday night, she had to go to a phone booth and wait for a call (small town, you could actually call payphones there).  The guy making the call to her was around the corner at another phone booth, in a hat and raincoat getup (think bad detective movie).  We sent her to about 6 phone booths around this small town, each time telling her where to go for the next call (and at each stop, we made sure she saw at least one person in a raincoat and hat).  It ended at a restaurant, and she walked in to about 15 or so of us sitting at a big table, and we were all wearing the bad detective raincoat and hat.  The flamingo was in a chair at the head of the table, wearing his own raincoat and hat (we found them at a doll shop).

That is priceless Cali!  [:)]

I have a sewing room for all my craft stuff - and it is full!

I'm a professional seamstress.  My 'horde' is housed in a two story, one car garage and it's over flowing.  "She who dies with the most fabric WINS!"

I started sewing when I was 4, my first machine was a treadle. My "sewing room" consists of our diningroom, livingroom, a huge walk in closet, the largest part of the downstairs bathroom, part of the entryway and the pool room (just fyi, a one inch piece of 4 x 8 plywood, covered on the pool table makes a great sewing table!). I have one sewing machine and a serger in the diningroom, one or two... maybe three sewing machines in the entryway (it's a big room), one in the livingroom and one in my bedroom. I also have a cart and a storage unit on wheels in the livingroom for my beading supplies, my cross stitching stuff takes up one side of our entertainment center... well, and a few other places. And soooo much other stuff like that all over the house. I buy fabric by the bolt. Not because I'm a professional seamstress... I don't have that kind of patience... I just make big stuff. It's just "stuff" I enjoy doing.

Thank the Goddess that Scooter is a patient man.... lol

Oh yeah, let's not forget the garage.... 32' x 36' garage. I have a large work space there too. I love woodworking and for Christmas he got me a mini factory. I have a small drill press, mini belt sander, portable table saw, mini table saw, chop saw and mini reciprocating saw. My "work bench" takes up about 15'... and don't get me started on bike parts...lol

Moving isn't an option so we'll just have to always get along great.

And to the first part of the question... we didn't have anything when we got together... both had just left crappy relationships pretty much empty handed. So everything we have we got together.

Littlepita -> RE: I am Not Selling My Pink Flamingos! (4/22/2008 4:46:08 AM)

When knew we wanted to be together, we of course had lots of discussions about where to live and what stuff we had to have. We were very fortunate that we were able to relocate to a new city, and because this was a brand new life together we decided to dump as much of our baggage (stuff) as we could. It was hard at first to give up almost everything I owned (went to ex-husband, sold in yard sale, donated), but then it became liberating. He picked me up and I had about five boxes with some clothes, personal items, photos, and a small box containing my Christmas snowman collection (sometimes a girl has to put her foot down). He mostly brought his clothes, books, and some tools. The rest of our stuff over the last two years has been bought together. We now dream of the day we build our own home and already plan to get rid most of this stuff and begin anew.

~just shakes his head at the thought of flamingos in outfits~

i had one in the front yard...dressed in a tux, complete with a bow tie and a top hat. One day i was pulling into the driveway, looked at it and decided it was the stupidest looking bloomin' thing i had ever seen....

I am in such a situation mydelsf right now and have figured or at least will try to figure out how to get around it.For the other hoarders here..peace be with you but if i ever extricate myself from this and there is a possibilty it won't happen...there will be no such hoarding as i will make sure i don't become that involved.I am at an age now where i want and deserve my creature comforts. That doesn't mean i need to live in Trump Towers..but a home with no clutter would be a nice start..and then i would of course be made responsible to keep it that way and the grounds and all the other areas of the property.I don't ask for much...have your own teeth and be clean..and if you can't have your own teeth then keep the choppers up to snuff.Oh and i also need some time to my lonesome to play my guitar so as not to disturb the rest of the house unless they of course wish to be disturbed.Of course there are times i would like to thinki for every pink flamingo there are a couple of bald eagles ready to swoop down..i don't know what that means ..just thought it sounded good.

I know, ironic ain't it? Seriously, I sew when I want to and what I want to... I won't do it on demand and I won't do it for pay... that kind of sewing I only tolerate. Besides, just cuz' I'm good at it doesn't mean I absolutely enjoy it. There are lots of things that we all do simply because they need to be done and if you want it done to your requirements it's best to do it yourself. Since I am the best seamstress I know... well, I do the work.

But that's all Scooter's fault... he spoiled me... badly, so now I do what I want, when I want.

softandshy -> RE: I am Not Selling My Pink Flamingos! (4/22/2008 9:04:42 PM)

In little over a week i'll be moving in with my lady, into her semi-truck.  Thankfully i have been traveling light for some time now so my things fit into a 5'x10' storage space with lots of room left over, leaving me with just a duffle bag, some incidentals, and a dog to cram into the truck.

Renee7852 -> RE: I am Not Selling My Pink Flamingos! (4/22/2008 9:27:10 PM)

For Camille65...... As for your books....you could check into your local area and see if there is a Freecycle there.  They are all over the country and the only catch is you have to give everything away...no selling.  Lots of folks here ( in Florida) make use of this, especially seniors on fixed incomes, those on disability etc...  I can't wait to move back home to unload a bunch of my stuff!

Master and i were so young when we got married, we really had nothing. Memory serves me that laundry was the only thing we melded, and that was somewhat one sided. i stole His clothes, He didn't steal mine. i think He's planning His revenge on something i got from my mother. It's a life size figure of a squirrel holding an acorn. He threatens to smash it if i ever put the squirrel on the back of the toilet again, no matter what Feng Shui says...

It was an irony I found so amusing because I imagined I could relate.  Sounds like I was correct.  [;)]

Sewing is a skill my grandmother taught me at a young age.  Like you, I'm good at it but I don't necessarily like doing it.  There are times that I wish I couldn't sew.  For once, I'd like to be able to go shopping for clothing without pangs of guilt because I can make anything I might want to buy for a fraction of the cost.  It gets wearisome being plagued with thoughts that I could have an item in the exact color I want... or lined... or with long sleeves... or constructed better... ad nauseam.

I have a dismal wardrobe as a result.  Those thoughts more often than not keep me from buying ready-made, yet I don't have the time, motivation, or patience to make all my own.

Oh ye gods! The main reason that it cost Master and I over $10,000 to shift Our more than 100 bits of furniture and 213 boxes across Australia is that We are both hoarders and neither of Us wanted to part with Our equivalent of pink flamingoes LOL! Every now and then, when We look a bit gloomily at the bank balance, Master has this wild idea that if things go pear-shaped here, We should sell up, buy a large Winnebago or equivalent, and set up to drive slowly around Australia seeing all that We didn't have time to see before. Sounds great ... until I look around at all this stuff, much of which would be awfully hard to replace and think ... HOW??

And I second the comment about cardboard boxes ... ARRGGHHH! There's still a couple to be sorted and unpacked ...

Geezzzz what ever happened to a can of gas and a book of matches?  :- )

MaamJay -> RE: I am Not Selling My Pink Flamingos! (4/24/2008 9:04:14 PM)

LOL ... probably needed but then We'd start a bushfire and that's a no no in Aus!

I've really been thinking about the "stuff" since this thread ... and yes, there's some I could probably part with, some papers, maybe My Franklin plate collection (though I'd miss it), old science and education journals. But not a whole lot [8|] Not enough to make a really noticeable dint! Before We moved We considered parting with most of the furniture as I'm not really attached to that ... except We'd get bugger all for it and replacing would be costly. We did the sums and it was far cheaper to bring it than to sell and re-buy. It was expensive enough to replace the bits We didn't bring - fridge, washer and dining furniture. And at least in the secondhand bookcases and cupboards ... We knew exactly where the more important stuff (the contents) would fit! I parted with some books in the past and lived to regret it. Master's Mum runs a secondhand bookshop and she is on the lookout for replacement copies of some books I wish I'd kept. I pruned the papers down quite a lot and actually got rid of more when unpacking at this end, but would find it hard to part with My lifetime academic work and very expensive texts, to say nothing of those I've had a hand in writing and editing. CDs, DVDs ... they'd have to stay. I did get rid of the vinyls (reluctantly)! Musical instruments ... well with great regret I parted from My piano but only because a total change from dry to humid climate wouldn't be fair to it. But the 3 guitars, mandolin and autoharp came with Me, as did Master's electric guitars and gear. And now We have all the PA equipment too! Computer gear ... couldn't lose that. Photos, scrapbooks and all the equipment for that ... that stays ... and occupies its own room as I also teach scrapbooking. Clothes ... well I did prune the wardrobe a bit, and now We've been here over a year I know I could sell off winter jackets ... except no one else round here would need them either! Master regularly sells off some of His remote controlled car collection to finance updated models. But He'd not be parted from it permanently nor from His tools for working on large and small cars! And having 2 dogs and a cat, there's a certain amount of paraphernalia goes along with them. To say nothing of the bdsm furniture ... as it was, We brought a limited amount!

I've come to the conclusion there's a big difference between stuff and junk, and while We have a lot of stuff, it is for the most part, useful AND used. Or it carries important memories eg most of the artwork on the walls are tapestries and cross stitches that I have done, and the ornaments are attached to those from whom they were received. Even My teddy bears ... they are named and I know when and how I acquired them, and was not amused when My ex commandeered several that weren't "his" in any way. There's actually very little junk and what there is is easily tossed. I am considering selling the garden furniture as it's a bit too big for the patio here ... but there's not really much else that would sell easily. Even the boxes left to be unpacked have been rummaged through, what's left is mostly archival papers and odd computer bits and cables that come in handy every now and then. So I guess We'll just have to find a way to stay or store ...
