ORIGINAL: cloudboy I like Cosby, but its a truism that people benefit from being self reliant, responsible, and striving. THE WIRE took a pretty poignant look at inner city America, and its last two seasons tracked the lives of four black middle schoolers from the hood. One wound up in a foster home after his mother was killed. Another turned into a heroine addict. The third entered the violent world of drug dealing. And a fourth got adopted by good parents --- and put his life on an upward track. Clearly it takes more than simple prescriptions for people to succeed, and failures and dysfunctions go beyond personal character traits. As for me, I taught in Baltimore City for one year. Sixth Grade. From what I saw its hard for people to row upstream when they lack health insurance, good jobs, and the society about them offers few prospects to climb the latter. I was in a special-education meeting with a parent of three, and she was wearing her IHOP uniform. I couldn't wrap my mind around how she made ends meet. Anway, at the start I went into my job arrogant about what a teacher could do in the classroom, and I left pretty damn humbled. Educating/helping/motivating/"speaking to people" is a tricky business. Its just something that defies easy answers. I agree, life can be terribly complex, but the things Cosby prescribes form the foundation for any chance at bettering one's life. He's not right about everything, but society could learn a great deal from him, and improve by doing so.
