An interesting point of view in today's New York Times regarding Wright, Obama and the election.

While I disagree with his assesments, all I can say about Rev Write is that he's a political bomb thower. No better or worse than many other political bomb throwers.

It is an interesting viewpoint - probably rooted in some reality.

In anycase, it completely corroborates the opinion that Wright has little to do with Obama's belief system. Wright may indeed well be pursuing his own agenda by using Obama as a stepping stone; add to that a media that is more than happy to cooperate in the destruction of the Democrat most likely to beat McCain, and you have a recipe for yet another Republican win.

What a beautiful system  .

It is Obama’s fault I’m afraid. His blind loyalty to the Reverend Wright reflects on his common sense…. which to me ….is very important in the governing of this country.

You would know…I would know…anyone with the sense of a slug would know… the consequences of his continued support for a controversial figure like Wright.

It makes no difference who is right…or who has the right…or even the truth… It is perception that counts.

It may well be too late for Obama. He would look weak now dumping his religious advisor. He should have known he needed the support of middle America to be President. He won’t get it with God Damn America Wright as his spiritual adviser…What a shame

There we have it. Perception only counts when priorities are skewed. It's all there, in that little sentence.

How fucked up is that? And if you know it, how many others know it, and yet are prepared to play the game? It's absolutely insane. But you know this.

The fact that Obama is so close to being the President is because of his platform of change. America knows the direction the country is going under Bush needs to change.

Even conservative America understands that and was willing to vote for an African American that reflected their views.

BUT

Conservative Americans are also leery of the intensions and motivations of African American activists. Is this racist… maybe…but those feelings are there like it or not.

Many of these voters are borderline at best…These are the same ones who thought same sex marriage was more important than the Middle East in the last election and fell for the Republican smoke screen.

They are needed to win… and if they loose trust in the intentions of Obama he will not win.

It's crazy to suggest that black and white issues are the same that our collective experiences have been the same and that we should all view this country in the same light.

So many seem to think that everything is perfect...For some reason those voices all seem to be emanating from white faces.

What seems crazy to me, is making this divide on issues and collective experience, based on the color of people's skin.

As I see thing, there are rich and poor, advantage and disadvantaged ... of all colors and sizes.

I have nothing against Pastor Wright, and he is certainly entitled to his opinion (which would make Thompson say to me, "how white of you") ... but, if I have the privalege of sitting down and talking him face to face, I think I would respectfully ask him to explain to me exactly why we need a black church and black religions experience. It seems to contrary to the goal of making us one people, equal in the eyes of man and God.

Is Mr. Wright running for president?

Obama's opponents will claim there is no distincition.

As a Catholic, I suppose I can now expect to be imputed by whatever the POPE might say.

I still agree with Stephen Chapman on this overall "issue."

>>Wright has gotten behind a leader whose success badly undercuts the pastor's belief in the irredeemability of America.

That is a good thing. If there are people, black or white, who hold such a bitter, distorted view of this country, it's reassuring that the most congenial political figure they can find is one who radiates—in fact, embodies—our national faith in freedom and progress.<<

Does the fact that perception is all that counts make it OK to fabricate a pack of lies to derail Obama?

So Obama finally threw his Reverend Wright under the bus. His spiritual adviser of twenty years, dumped for political expedience.

Can Obama fall any farther from grace?

Can this election cycle get any more weird?

Perhaps, but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt.

Yes, if they ever show proof that he echoes Wright's sentiments.

Did you see Hillary challenging him to a debate, on the back of a flatbed truck?

I'd settle for some proof that Wright echoes many of the sentiments being attributed to him...

Having learned first hand what he actually said, it looks more and more likely that the selective outrage is pure fabrication, just like the pictures of Obama in 'terrorist garb', or being sworn in on a Koran, etc.

cloudboy, if you listen/watch Wright's speech about "goddamn America", it will be clear to you, and to anyone who also does so, that, taken in the context of his sermon, Wright does not single out America or any country/government. He speaks of the changeability and, therefore, unreliability of all government, as opposed to  , what he considers to be, the unchangeability of god. He sites examples throughout history. The Babylonians, Egyptians, Greeks and Romans, Third Reich ( a thousand years, remember ?). He has a point, imo.

When will people learn that agendas are advanced by taking comments out of context and quoting them ? Probably never in a society where people form their opinions on sound bites and are so easily manipulated.

Did you read the article LotusSong linked to?

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/24371827

I wouldn't be surprised if we see an all out war develop between Obama and Wright.

Wright is between Obama nad the presidency, and now Wright's feeling all butt hurt about it.

Senator Obama's apparently seen enough.

What will it take to convince you.

Facts, instead of racist innuendo...but you haven't got any facts, now have you?

quote:

Memphis-area pastors react to Wright's speech:
Rev. Dwight Montgomery, local head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference: "I believe that criticism of Dr. Wright would be an affront against the church itself. Not just the black church, but church as a whole. Society doesn't have the right to muzzle preachers, regardless of their color or their faith."

Rev. Leonard Dawson, pastor of Cane Creek Baptist: "It could be interpreted as criticism of the black church and the content of our messages, which are sometimes misunderstood. And sometimes deliberately misunderstood."

Rev. Ralph White, pastor of Bloomfield Full Gospel Church: "There could be some truth in it, but the whole situation, I see, is a political smokescreen. I think there's more important things in the nation we need to deal with, the economy, war. I think those things are more important to us. I think this is something to throw us off track as far as where Barack Obama stands."

You're the one bringing racism into it. I don't like Obama because he's the furthest Left Senator we have - he's a Socialist, bordering on extremism.

I don't care about his color. Why do you always cry 'racism' if someone does anything other than faint over your candidate.

Sometimes I think that's exactly why the left is running a black socialist. If anyone dares says a word against him... you can go all apoplectic, and cry racism.

Regardless of what he says or does, he should get a pass.
